This review covers the standard steel Breitling Superocean Automatic 46, reference A17378E71C1S1—the blue-dial, blue-rubber-strap configuration listed on Breitling’s US site. It is based on the manufacturer’s specifications, not hands-on testing. Other A17378 references use different dial or strap/bracelet configurations, and the Black Steel version is a separate watch with substantially different specifications.
What the standard steel Superocean Automatic 46 offers
The A17378 is a large, mechanically simple dive watch on paper: a 46 mm steel case, automatic Caliber 17, a bidirectional bezel with a security lock, and a stated water-resistance rating of 300 m. Breitling’s launch material dates the model to June 30, 2022, and describes its design as drawing on the brand’s earlier “Slow Motion” dive-watch codes. That is Breitling’s design history and positioning, rather than an independent assessment.
The current US reference covered here is A17378E71C1S1, with a blue rubber strap. Breitling’s 2022 launch release also lists black- and blue-dial references, in rubber-strap and steel-bracelet configurations.

How big does the Superocean 46 wear?
The most useful fit figures are not just the 46 mm diameter: Breitling’s 2022 launch specification gives a 52.29 mm lug-to-lug span and 13.22 mm thickness. The diameter and long span make trying it on sensible if you are sensitive to overhang or bulk. Dimensions alone cannot establish comfort, and this review does not claim a wrist-fit test.
Strap choice also affects how the watch sits and feels, but does not change the case dimensions. The current US reference uses a 24 mm blue rubber strap; the launch range included rubber and bracelet options. Before ordering an aftermarket strap, confirm compatibility for the exact reference, attachment style, and clasp rather than relying only on nominal width.

Movement, bezel, and diving specifications
Caliber 17
Breitling lists a self-winding Caliber 17 with approximately 38 hours of reserve. The launch release identifies the movement as COSC-certified, while the current US listing specifies 28,800 vibrations per hour and 26 jewels. Certification and published reserve are specifications; they do not substitute for an independent accuracy or reserve test of an individual watch.
Bezel and legibility
For the 46 mm model, Breitling specifies a bidirectional bezel with a security lock and ceramic inlay. The direction matters: bezel operation varies across the broader Superocean range, so this description should not be generalized to every Superocean. Breitling says the hands and indexes use Super-LumiNova and are intended to support underwater readability; no lume performance was independently assessed.

Water resistance
The standard steel A17378 is rated by Breitling to 30 bar / 300 m. The listed screw-locked crown with two gaskets and screwed caseback are part of the manufacturer’s specification. A depth rating is not a guarantee that a particular used watch remains sealed: condition and servicing affect an individual watch’s water resistance.

“Black Steel” is a distinct configuration, not another name for the standard steel A17378. Breitling’s separate M17368D71C1S1 Black Steel listing specifies DLC-coated stainless steel, a thickness of 16.85 mm, and 2,000 m water resistance. It also lists approximately 38 hours of power reserve. Those figures belong to that reference and should not be attributed to the 300 m standard steel watch.

Is the Breitling Superocean Automatic 46 worth buying?
The case for the standard steel A17378 is its combination of a large 46 mm format, 300 m rating, ceramic-inlay bezel with a security lock, and COSC-certified automatic movement in Breitling’s launch specifications. It is a plausible choice for someone seeking those traits in a prominent steel dive watch, particularly if the 46 mm diameter and 52.29 mm lug-to-lug fit comfortably.
The main buying caution is fit: the published dimensions are substantial, and there is no basis here for promising that it will wear comfortably on a particular wrist. Decide which exact reference and strap or bracelet you want, then compare that model with alternatives on case diameter and lug-to-lug, thickness, bezel operation, certification and reserve, material, warranty, and current local price. Breitling’s 2022 release provides design context and specifications, not independent evidence of comfort, accuracy, or long-term durability.
For the exact blue-rubber reference, consult Breitling’s US product page for the current configuration and warranty information. Confirm local availability, price, tax basis, and warranty terms at the time of purchase.
