What changed in the 2023 Top Time Classic Cars release?
The release updated the Mustang, Corvette and Shelby Cobra watches that had joined the lineup in 2021, and added the Thunderbird-inspired model. The defining mechanical change was Breitling’s B01 automatic chronograph movement. Contemporary launch coverage dated the announcement to March 21, 2023. Fratello Watches and Hodinkee reported the launch details.

The Top Time itself dates to the 1960s. Breitling describes it as an unconventional chronograph conceived by third-generation founder Willy Breitling, and says the modern Classic Cars designs take their colors and emblems from sports cars of the 1950s and ’60s. Breitling’s current collection page provides that background, but now emphasizes later B21 tourbillon models; it is not an archived specification sheet for every 2023 B01 reference.
How the four models differ
The dial and counter layout are the quickest ways to distinguish the watches. The Cobra is the only two-register model; the other three have three registers and a 12-hour counter.

These colors, configurations and options are those reported in March 2023 launch coverage by Fratello Watches and Hodinkee. The inspiration is specific: Thunderbird, Mustang, Corvette and Cobra, respectively. Breitling’s current page dates the Cobra’s introduction to 1962, the Thunderbird’s debut to the 1954 Detroit Motor Show, and identifies the Corvette and Mustang inspirations with the 1963–67 second-generation Corvette and 1964–74 first-generation Mustang. Those historical descriptions are Breitling’s own account.
Movement and shared specifications
All four watches were reported at launch with a 41 mm stainless-steel case, 13.8 mm thickness, approximately 50.36 mm lug-to-lug, display caseback and 100 m water resistance. These dimensions and launch specifications were published by Fratello Watches and Hodinkee.

The official collection page currently describes Caliber 01 as COSC-certified, with approximately 70 hours of power reserve, and states 100 m (10 bar) water resistance for the described Classic Cars case. These current collection details offer context for the B01 update, not a reference-by-reference archived record of the 2023 release. At 41 mm with a reported 50.36 mm lug-to-lug measurement, the case has a substantial footprint despite its relatively restrained diameter. Those measurements are useful for comparing fit, but do not replace trying the watch on: wrist shape, strap or mesh configuration, and personal preference affect how it wears.

Which version makes the most sense?
- Choose by car and dial first: the white Thunderbird, green Mustang, red Corvette and blue-and-white Cobra are visually distinct rather than minor color variations.
- Consider the timing display: the Cobra’s two-register, 30-minute layout differs materially from the three-register, 12-hour arrangement on the other editions.
- Compare the attachment options: launch coverage reported leather and steel-mesh configurations, with strap colors varying by model. Confirm the exact option and compatibility for the specific reference before purchase.
- Assess fit in person when possible: the reported 41 mm diameter and approximately 50.36 mm lug-to-lug make wrist presence a relevant selection factor.
- Verify the exact reference and seller: Fratello printed AB01762A1L1X1 for both the Corvette and Mustang, a discrepancy that should not be silently resolved. Confirm a Corvette reference with Breitling, and establish the seller’s authorized status, condition and warranty before buying.
