The Breva Génie 01 is a rare mechanical wristwatch introduced in 2013 with an unusual second job: indicating altitude and barometric pressure trends. Its “wrist-size weather station” description refers to a pressure-sensitive mechanical instrument, not an electronic forecast service. Breva’s launch-era specifications describe 110 watches across two gold versions; the prices reported at launch are historical, not current offers.
What the Breva Génie 01 does
Alongside hours, minutes and small seconds, the Génie 01 displays altitude, barometric pressure or weather tendency, and mainspring power reserve. It also provides controls for adjusting the altitude and barometric scales and a valve to equalize pressure inside the mechanism with outside air. The watch was developed for Breva by Jean-François Mojon and Chronode. Monochrome Watches’ March 2013 report documents the functions and launch specifications.
“Weather station” is best understood as a description of its mechanical pressure instrument. The watch does not receive a forecast, connect to a weather service or use a digital sensor. It translates pressure changes into indications that the wearer must interpret in context.
How its mechanical weather indication works
The reported mechanism uses two pressure-sensitive aneroid capsules. As air pressure changes, the capsules expand or contract; levers, gears and racks transmit that movement to the altitude and barometric indications. The contemporary report uses the term “anaerobic” for the capsules, but “aneroid” is the standard term for a pressure-sensitive capsule that does not rely on liquid. No primary technical document or independent accuracy data is available here to establish further details about the mechanism.

Why altitude and weather must be considered together
Atmospheric pressure falls as elevation increases. A climb or descent can therefore produce a pressure change that might otherwise be read as a weather trend. The Génie 01’s altitude indication and separate gearing are intended to help distinguish these effects. Its weather display is described as responding to pressure tendency—particularly the direction and rate of change—rather than treating one pressure reading as a complete forecast.
Rising pressure is generally associated with improving conditions and falling pressure with worsening conditions, but neither is a guarantee about local weather. The available published specifications provide no barometer or altimeter accuracy, calibration tolerance, pressure range or forecast-success rate.

What the equalizer is for
The air-pressure equalizer lets the pressure inside the watch mechanism be brought into balance with outside air before the barometric system is used or adjusted. It is a working part of the instrument, not an ornamental crown. When its valve is unlocked, a red “SEALED” warning indicator is visible. The source does not state a water-resistance rating for the watch with the valve open, so do not assume the published rating applies in that state.

The reported control layout is:
- 9 o’clock: crown for winding and setting the time.
- 2 o’clock: outer ring for adjusting the barometric-pressure scale; inner pusher for positioning the altitude indication.
- 4 o’clock: crown and locking ring for opening or sealing the air-pressure equalizer. The ring turns 90 degrees between locked and unlocked positions.
This is a control map, not a full operating procedure. The contemporary description does not supply a complete manual, calibration instructions or a safe sequence for every adjustment. Owners should not infer one from the control layout alone.
Case, movement and published specifications
The Génie 01 is a substantial instrument watch: its reported case measures 44.7 mm across and 15.6 mm thick. Semi-transparent smoky-sapphire subdials, a compass-rose engraving associated with the power-reserve display, and a sapphire display back make the indications and mechanism part of the design. An engraved altitude-and-pressure correlation scale appears around the caseback. The three crown-based controls are distributed around the case.

Edition size and 2013 launch prices
Monochrome Watches reported production of 55 pieces in white gold and 55 in 4N pink gold, for 110 examples in total. Its March 2013 report listed launch prices before tax of CHF 150,000 for white gold and CHF 145,000 for pink gold. These figures are historical launch prices; they do not establish a current asking price, auction result or insurance value.

Génie 01 versus the later Génie 02 and Génie 03
The Génie 01’s defining idea is the combination of altitude and a barometric weather-tendency display. The later Génie 02 Terre is a different watch, focused on a mechanical altimeter with time and power-reserve indications rather than the Génie 01’s weather-station configuration. A later Génie 02 report lists its titanium case as 44.7 mm by 15.6 mm, with a 65-hour power reserve and historical recommended prices of CHF 120,000, €97,500 and $132,000. Those are Génie 02 figures, not Génie 01 specifications or current prices.
The Breva archive also lists a Génie 03 as a speedometer wrist instrument and a platinum Génie 01 entry. The material available here does not establish enough detail to compare those versions fully.
Practical limits and buying considerations
- It is not a stand-alone forecast: altitude changes affect pressure, and local conditions still require interpretation. It is not a substitute for a connected forecast or a modern electronic weather instrument.
- Its size is consequential: at 44.7 mm by 15.6 mm, it is a large, thick watch, not a discreet dress piece. Lug-to-lug length, weight and fit across wrist sizes are not stated in the cited specifications.
- Water use calls for caution: the published rating is 30 m, and the equalizer must be sealed for the watch to be in its sealed state. The documented information does not define use with the valve open; do not treat 30 m as an invitation to swim or expose the watch to water casually.
- Rarity complicates ownership: no verified service interval, service network, parts policy or restoration guidance is established here. These are important questions to resolve before buying a rare, mechanically complex example.
- Its working state depends on winding and setup: the stated 65-hour reserve is a mechanical reserve, not a guarantee that the watch will continue indicating after it stops. No restart or recalibration procedure is provided.
Can you buy a Breva Génie 01 today?
Current retail availability and a reliable secondary-market value are not established. The historical article references Breva’s website at http://www.breva-watch.com/, but that reference is not proof of current stock, ordering, warranty coverage or servicing. Treat any present-day offer as a separate transaction to verify, including the watch’s condition, provenance, operation of the pressure system, and access to qualified service. There is not enough current market evidence here to call the Génie 01 an investment or assign it a 2026 value.
