How Hartog rescued Millroy from the burning Ferrari
The crash happened on 5 September 2026 during the China GT Championship in Shanghai. Hartog stopped his own car, used a fire extinguisher on Millroy’s burning Ferrari and pulled him out, according to ITV and the Associated Press (ITV; Associated Press).

Millroy’s wife, Fern, said in a family update reported by ITV that he suffered six broken ribs, a broken collarbone, a broken hand and a punctured lung. These are family-reported injuries, not details independently established here from medical records.
The Associated Press quoted Millroy’s Instagram statement: “I am still alive tonight, entirely thanks to one man. Loek Hartog stopped instantly with no flag marshals or fire crews in sight and risked his own life to get me out of the car.”

Why Millroy gave Hartog a Rolex
Reports published on 8 October said Millroy presented Hartog with a Rolex when they reunited in Amsterdam. The gift and Hartog’s reaction were reported from Hartog’s social-media post; the coverage confirms the brand, but does not reliably identify the watch’s model, price, engraving or purchase details (gift report; Hartog’s reported post).
GPToday reproduced Hartog’s Dutch wording: “I weet nog steeds niet goed wat ik moet zeggen als iemand me zomaar een Rolex geeft! Het is een ongelooflijk bijzonder cadeau dat ik voor altijd zal koesteren.” In translation: “I still don’t really know what to say when someone just gives me a Rolex! It is an incredibly special gift that I will cherish forever.” This English version is a translation of the reported Dutch post, not a quotation originally written in English.
The gesture followed a rescue in which Hartog put himself close to a burning car to get Millroy out. Hartog’s response, quoted by the Associated Press, was: “You have nothing to thank me for,” he said. “I wish to live in a world where this would not be considered as bravery – but as the instinct of others, too. I am so grateful to have been at the place I needed to be.”

What is known about the emergency response
The rescue has also prompted criticism of the event response. Millroy’s team, AAI Motorsports, accused the organizer of serious failures and said it would withdraw from future GT events in China while seeking a comprehensive investigation, the Associated Press reported. Organizers apologized and said they would review event organization, emergency response, rescue operations and medical services.
