Miles Davis is most often linked to the Breitling Navitimer through a vintage reference that Breitling itself identifies as the 806 Mk5, a Navitimer with a reverse-panda dial and the Twin Jet logo. Breitling’s account places that watch in the mid-1960s, when a redesign made the chronograph’s aviation styling recognizable enough to be worn well beyond the cockpit. The modern link is a limited tribute, the Navitimer B09 Chronograph 41 Miles Davis, which is a new commemorative edition rather than a surviving vintage object.
Why the Navitimer was built the way it was
Breitling dates the Navitimer’s introduction to 1954. The name joins “navigation” and “timer,” and the watch’s circular slide rule was meant to help pilots with air-navigation calculations. According to Breitling’s brand history, the rule was used for values such as speed, distance, fuel consumption and unit conversions. In other words, the bezel and dial were working instruments before they were fashion objects.
Breitling’s history also notes that the first version distributed through the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) did not carry Breitling branding. The public version with the Breitling name and logo followed in late 1955. That detail matters for collectors because it separates the earliest aviation-market pieces from the watches that later reached ordinary buyers.
The Twin Jet redesign that changed its image
The turning point in Breitling’s narrative is the mid-1960s redesign. Breitling says the Twin Jet logo arrived around 1965, alongside contrasting subdials that made the dial easier to read at a glance. The brand’s own history describes the refreshed design as having elevated the watch to the status of a “pilots’ favorite chronograph” and says it became an icon after being worn by celebrities, naming jazz musician Miles Davis and Formula 1 champions Jim Clark, Graham Hill and Jo Siffert.

Two points are worth keeping separate. The first is design: the legible layout and the Twin Jet logo gave the watch a look that stood out on a wrist as well as in a cockpit. The second is association: Breitling’s page is a brand account, published without a named author or date, and it does not provide independent archival proof of which celebrity wore which watch, or when. The Davis link therefore rests on Breitling’s identification rather than on separate provenance documents.
What Davis wore: reference 806 Mk5
Breitling identifies Davis’s Navitimer as reference 806 Mk5. The brand describes it as the first version to combine a reverse-panda dial with the Twin Jet logo, which is why collectors often treat it as the reference that anchors the Davis story.

The reviewed sources do not establish the ownership chain, purchase date or physical condition of Davis’s individual watch. If you are assessing a specific vintage 806 Mk5 for sale, the reference identification alone does not tell you whether the piece is original, correctly assembled or linked to Davis, and it should be checked by an independent specialist.
The 2026 tribute: Navitimer B09 Chronograph 41 Miles Davis
The modern edition is reference AB09501A1B1X1, limited to 500 pieces. Breitling says it borrows the Twin Jet logo, cream-colored Super-LumiNova, the original dimensions and a manual-wind format from the 806 Mk5, while the caliber and materials are contemporary. It should be understood as an interpretation of the vintage watch, not a mechanically identical reissue.

The Bob Dylan line on Breitling’s product page
Breitling’s current product page quotes Bob Dylan: “Miles Davis is my definition of cool.” The page attributes the sentence to Dylan, but it does not give an original interview or publication. Treat it as Breitling’s attribution, not as an independently verified quotation.

How to read the Davis association
The Navitimer’s appeal to Davis’s circle can be explained without overstating the evidence. The watch offered a clear, high-contrast chronograph dial, a recognizable logo and an aviation pedigree that was easy to explain. Breitling then presented the redesign as a turning point, naming Davis among the wearers who made it an icon. That is a credible account of how the watch gained a public identity, but the sources do not quantify Davis’s effect on sales or popularity, and no such figure should be assumed.
If you are approaching this as a buyer, the practical split is simple. For a vintage 806 Mk5, the Breitling identification is a starting point that needs independent verification of originality and provenance. For the 2026 tribute, the listed specifications and price are the reference points, and they should be confirmed at the point of sale.
Verdict: the Davis link is best read as a brand-supported association grounded in a genuine design history. The Navitimer’s 1954 aviation origins and the mid-1960s Twin Jet redesign are documented in Breitling’s account; the specific watch Davis wore is documented only by Breitling’s identification.
