Buler Watch Review: Two Vintage Models Worth Knowing

Two unusual Buler watches stand out: a four-city GMT with a disconnecting button and a Wrigley’s dial that reveals an image through rotating polarizers. Here’s what their documented features—and limits—mean for vintage buyers.

Is a vintage Buler watch worth buying? It may be, if you are drawn to unusual vintage design and can verify the condition of the individual watch. The evidence available here centers on two distinctive examples—not a comprehensive review of every Buler model: a four-time-zone GMT and a Wrigley’s promotional watch with a dial that changes when its filter rotates. Neither feature establishes current prices, parts availability, or a brand-wide quality or accuracy standard.

What is special about these Buler watches?

Fratello’s Buler index highlights two models that show the range of the brand’s more unusual designs. One presents several city time references on a single dial; the other uses a moving polarizing filter to reveal and obscure an image. The examples are documented in personal feature articles, not controlled tests or a survey of the full Buler range.

Example What stands out What the published account establishes
1970s Buler GMT Four city references and an upper button that disconnects the GMT hands Fratello’s author describes the operation and reports on one serviced example; the article does not establish a model-wide specification.
Wrigley’s mystery-dial watch A changing image produced by two polarizing filter layers Fratello explains the filter effect and estimates the watch dates to the late 1970s; the article does not establish the watch’s original recipient or provenance.

Both feature articles identify the movement in their respective watches as BFG 582, corresponding to a Baumgartner 582 movement. That shared detail does not make the two watches interchangeable: their appeal is in different dial mechanisms, and the condition of each surviving example matters more than a broad brand label.

How does the Buler GMT work?

In Tomas Rosputinsky’s account of a 1970s Buler GMT, the dial refers to Paris, New York, Tokyo, and Sydney. Its GMT hands move in step with the central time display during normal operation.

  1. Pull out the upper button to disconnect the GMT hands.
  2. Set the central time while the GMT hands are disengaged.
  3. Press the button back in to reconnect the hands’ motion.

The unusual coupling makes the button’s condition and function important when assessing a listing. Rosputinsky reports that his example had a damaged case and a missing upper pusher before service; his watchmaker made a replacement button. This is one owner’s account, not proof that every example has the same problem or that replacement parts are generally available.

How does the Wrigley’s mystery dial work?

The Wrigley’s watch described in Fratello’s feature uses two polarizing layers. As the upper filter turns, its alignment with the lower layer changes: aligned grids let light through and reveal the image, while a perpendicular orientation darkens it. The changing display is the watch’s central novelty.

The feature’s author estimates that the example dates to the late 1970s and suggests it may have been given to employees or customers. Those are estimates and possibilities, not documented provenance. Treat a seller’s account of a particular watch’s origin as something to verify rather than as a conclusion supported by this feature.

What do the movement and accuracy reports tell you?

The GMT feature identifies the movement marking as BFG 582 and describes the movement as having one jewel on the balance wheel. The Wrigley’s feature says BFG 582 corresponds to a Baumgartner 582. These descriptions identify the movements in the featured watches; they do not establish the specification or condition of every Buler watch.

For the GMT, Rosputinsky quotes his watchmaker Tomas on the serviced example: “It ticks within 30 seconds accuracy per day on average, which is great for a watch without jewels.” The article gives no controlled test protocol, so this is a report about one watch after service—not a guaranteed tolerance or general Buler accuracy figure.

What should you check before buying a vintage Buler?

Because the two published examples include a serviced movement and a repaired, missing button, inspect the exact watch rather than assuming its mechanism or condition from the model name. Ask the seller for:

  • Clear photographs of the dial, case, movement, and case back.
  • Confirmation that the GMT button and all hands function, if you are considering the GMT example.
  • Service documentation, including what work was done and when.
  • Measurements of the watch and its strap lug width before ordering a replacement strap or judging fit.
  • An account of any replaced or repaired components, especially when a feature depends on a moving filter or button.

Rosputinsky fitted his GMT with a short black strap, but the article does not state its lug width. Measure the individual watch rather than relying on that detail to choose a strap.

What is known about Buler’s history?

Fratello’s Wrigley’s feature reports that Buler was founded in 1945 and that its founders left nine years later. The same article attributes to Buler’s website a claim that the company produced more than one million Swiss watches distributed to 65 countries in the late 1950s. Those are historical claims as reported by Fratello, not independently verified company records here; they should not be treated as a present-day measure of quality, rarity, or value.

Verdict: is a vintage Buler worth buying?

The GMT and Wrigley’s examples make a credible case for Buler as a source of mechanically and visually unusual vintage watches. The GMT’s four-city display and disengaging button offer practical interest; the Wrigley’s watch turns a polarizing filter into a changing image. Whether either is a sound purchase depends on the specific watch’s working condition, service evidence, dimensions, and price. The available accounts do not establish current market values or availability, so compare the individual listing on its merits rather than relying on a brand-wide price or quality verdict.
