The Bulgari Octo Finissimo is a family of architectural watches built around ultra-thin mechanical watchmaking. Since its 2014 debut, the collection has produced a sequence of model-specific records—not one claim that applies to every Octo Finissimo. Its 2026 37 mm line adds new proportions and a purpose-built automatic movement, while other models prioritize complications such as a perpetual calendar or minute repeater.
What is the Octo Finissimo?
Bulgari dates the collection’s debut to 2014 and describes its design as Roman-inspired architecture. That is the brand’s framing of the watch’s angular, geometric identity; it should not be read as a claim that the design directly reproduces a particular ancient building. Bulgari says the 2026 37 mm interpretation retains the collection’s identity while revising its proportions, comfort and technical features. Bulgari’s Watches & Wonders 2026 announcement introduces four versions, spanning titanium finishes, yellow gold and a Minute Repeater.
Octo Finissimo is not a single specification. Case size, thickness, material, movement, power reserve, water resistance and complication vary by model. A headline about one version—especially a thinness record—does not describe the full range.
What makes the collection record-breaking?
The records are milestones achieved by particular watches over time. On 16 May 2024, the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry (FH) reported that the Octo Finissimo Ultra COSC measured 1.70 mm thick and called it the thinnest COSC-certified chronometer at that date. The federation also described it as the thinnest mechanical watch resistant to shocks and magnetic fields “ever produced” at publication. Those are dated, specifically scoped claims, not a guarantee that the Ultra COSC remains the thinnest watch today or that every Octo Finissimo shares its construction. Read the FH report.

- The watch is powered by the motion of the wearer's wrist. If the watch is not worn for 8 or more active hours per day, it will run slower than usual or even stop briefly.
The FH report gives the Ultra COSC a 40 mm diameter, a hand-wound BVL180 movement with 170 components and a 50-hour power reserve. It describes a 20-piece limited edition. To achieve the watch’s construction, the movement components are arranged on the case back, which also serves as a plate; the case back/plate uses tungsten carbide for rigidity. The report also notes a dedicated digital setting and winding box. This is a specialized record-oriented design, not simply a standard watch movement made smaller.
Record claims and awards describe different kinds of achievement. Wallpaper*’s report on the 2025 GPHG winners lists the Octo Finissimo Ultra Tourbillon as the Tourbillon Watch Prize winner. That award result does not itself establish a thinness record.

What changed with the 2026 37 mm models?
The 37 mm family is a new direction in proportions, not just a smaller case around the existing 40 mm movement. Bulgari says the line was developed over three years at its Swiss manufacture, uses a new BVF 100 automatic movement, offers a 72-hour power reserve and reduces movement volume by 20% compared with the movement in the 40 mm model. These are Bulgari’s published figures for the new line, not measurements that apply to the collection as a whole. Bulgari’s 2026 announcement presents four versions, including titanium finishes, yellow gold and a Minute Repeater.
Wallpaper*’s 15 April 2026 report gives the BVF 100’s height as 2.35 mm. In the interview, Bulgari product creation executive director Fabrizio Buonamassa Stigliani explained the need for a different movement: “If we want to make a smaller one, we are obliged to develop a brand-new movement, because there is no chance to use the existing Octo movement in a smaller size.” He said only the platinum rotor and balance wheel carried over from the earlier movement. Stigliani also rejected positioning the watch as simply a smaller or gendered version: “It was important to avoid positioning it as a ‘smaller’ or ‘female’ version. That would have been a mistake.” He described the aim as “not simply to make another version of the Octo Finissimo,” but “to create a completely new watch.” These are his views on the design brief, rather than a technical specification.
How do individual models differ?
The specifications below show why comparisons need to be made reference by reference. The 40 mm Perpetual Calendar is a useful example of a complication-focused model, while the Ultra COSC’s defining published distinction is its record-oriented thinness.

The table’s figures describe the cited models and announcements, not universal Octo Finissimo specifications. Bulgari’s official 40 mm titanium Perpetual Calendar page lists its calibre, dimensions, displays and 30 m water resistance.

Start with how you intend to wear and use the watch, then compare the exact reference. A complicated movement or a record-setting construction is not automatically the best fit for every buyer.

- Complication: Decide whether you want straightforward timekeeping or functions such as a perpetual calendar, tourbillon or minute repeater. More complication is a distinct design choice, not a measure of thinness.
- Material and finish: The documented range includes titanium, yellow gold and different titanium finishes. Match the material to your preference rather than assuming all models share the same case construction.
- Water resistance: Verify the exact model’s rating and consider whether it suits your intended use. The cited Perpetual Calendar page lists 30 m; that rating is not evidence for other versions.
- Edition and record status: Check whether a version is limited and read record language with its date and scope. A dated record does not establish current standing across all watches.
