Ceramic watches offer a smooth, lightweight feel and strong resistance to everyday surface scratches—but they are not scratch-proof or impact-proof. The best choice depends on which parts of the watch are ceramic, how it fits and wears, and whether its movement and price suit your needs.
What ceramic does—and does not—protect against
Watchmaking ceramic is an engineered material, not ordinary pottery. Rado describes its high-tech ceramic as made from zirconium oxide powder, pigments and binder. The material is shaped under pressure, sintered and polished; Rado says this process takes approximately five to six weeks. The brand reports hardness of approximately 1,250 Vickers. Those are manufacturer descriptions and figures, not independent test results for this guide. Rado’s high-tech ceramic overview explains the process.
Hardness helps explain ceramic’s appeal: it resists many of the small abrasions that can mark a watch during ordinary wear. But resistance is not immunity. Rado says materials at least as hard as its ceramic can scratch it, citing nail files, granite and sand as examples. Its definition of scratch-resistant is “capable of withstanding scratching that occurs with normal everyday use.” Rado’s material information also warns that a dropped watch may break. In practical terms, ceramic can be a strong choice for avoiding routine surface marks, but it is not a guarantee against scratches or impact damage.

How to choose a ceramic watch
Check which components are ceramic
“Ceramic watch” can describe different constructions. Check whether ceramic covers the case alone, the bezel or bracelet as well, or is combined with steel. A mixed ceramic-and-steel model will look and wear differently from one with broader ceramic coverage. Read the specification for the exact reference rather than relying on a collection name or product photograph.

Match the dimensions to your wrist
Compare case diameter and thickness, and consider bracelet fit and adjustment. The CHANEL examples above range from 28 mm to 42 mm, a substantial difference in wrist presence. If possible, try on the exact model; listed diameter alone does not tell you how a watch will sit or feel.
Choose the movement and intended use
Confirm whether the particular model uses a quartz or mechanical movement, then account for its battery or power needs and expected service. Check the stated water resistance against how you plan to wear it; a ceramic exterior does not establish water resistance. Use the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact reference, since the available examples do not supply one consistent set of details for every model.

Consider legibility and finish
Look at the dial contrast and whether the ceramic is polished or matte. Black, white and other finishes can have very different visual presence, and the right choice is the one that remains legible and works with the clothes and settings where you will wear it.
Weigh price against impact risk
Use the full price and the brand’s support terms when comparing watches, and consider whether you are comfortable wearing a material that can resist everyday scratching yet may break if dropped. CHANEL states that its ceramic is “seven times more resistant than steel,” but its cited page does not specify a test method. Treat this as a CHANEL claim, not a universal or independently verified ceramic-versus-steel comparison. CHANEL’s ceramic-watch information provides its own material description.
