For a first vintage Longines, compare the Admiral 8581-2 and Ultra-Chron diver 7970; choose the Conquest 1543-1 or diver 8229-1 for chronograph collecting, and approach the Ultra-Quartz 8284 as a specialist watch whose movement needs careful verification.
This shortlist follows five distinct buying propositions, not an objective ranking of every Longines made during the decade. Compare movement and complication, case size, originality, service history, and price rather than style alone.
At a glance: five 1970s Longines watches
| Watch | Size | Movement and appeal | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Admiral ref. 8581-2 | About 39 mm, according to Fratello | Automatic calibre 431; high-frequency, 36,000 vph | High-frequency automatic appeal |
| Conquest ref. 1543 / 1543-1 | 37 mm for ref. 1543, per Swatch Group | Flyback chronograph; sources use differing calibre nomenclature | Rare vintage chronograph collecting |
| Chronograph Diver ref. 8229-1 | 41 mm, according to Fratello | Manual-wind chronograph with colorful Bakelite bezel | Chronograph-diver presence |
| Ultra-Chron Diver ref. 7970 | About 40 mm, according to Fratello | Automatic calibre 431; high-frequency diver | High-beat diver appeal |
| Ultra-Quartz ref. 8284 | Not specified in the supplied dossier | Experimental early quartz watch; movement originality is important | Specialist interest in watch technology |
The sizes, specifications, and historical price estimates in this guide are source-specific, not a guarantee that every variant shares them. Fratello’s 2021 guide is the source for the individual model descriptions and its dated estimates; Swatch Group’s 2024 archive independently documents the 1973 Conquest ref. 1543 as a 37 mm self-winding flyback chronograph with calibre 30CH.
Why the 1970s matter for Longines
Longines’ watches from this decade span automatic high-frequency calibres, traditional chronographs, chronograph divers, and experimental quartz technology. Their different complications and designs make a comparison more useful than choosing by appearance alone.

#1 Best Overall
The models below are drawn from Fratello’s 2021 buying guide. Its price estimates are historical figures only, not current market values.
1. Longines Admiral ref. 8581-2: high-frequency automatic appeal
Fratello describes the Admiral 8581-2 as a sporty 1970s automatic with a cushion-shaped case, a distinctive dial, and calibre 431. The guide gives the movement’s frequency as 36,000 vibrations per hour, with a date at three o’clock and a stated 40-hour power reserve. It also highlights the original bracelet as an important part of the watch’s presentation.
Longines’ Collector’s Corner entry for a 1970 Admiral independently documents a high-frequency Admiral example, ref. 8581-16145026, with an automatic stainless-steel case, opaline ivory dial, and bracelet. That particular example is marked no longer available; the page is useful as historical reference, not as a current buying offer.
What to check
- Compare the dial, hands, case, and bracelet with reference-specific examples; Fratello notes that dial configurations differ.
- Request a clear movement photograph and service records. Fratello advises regular servicing for calibre 431; have a qualified watchmaker assess the individual watch rather than treating a seller’s claim that it runs as proof of condition.
- Inspect the case for polishing or softened surfaces, and treat water resistance as unproven unless a qualified professional has tested it.
Fratello’s 2021 guide gave an approximate €800–€2,000 estimate depending on condition. This is historical context, not a current price recommendation.
2. Longines Conquest ref. 1543 / 1543-1: a rare flyback chronograph
The Conquest 1543 is the chronograph choice in this group. Swatch Group’s official archive lists the 1973 ref. 1543 as a 37 mm self-winding watch with calibre 30CH and a flyback function, and describes it as one of the first chronographs in the Conquest collection.
Fratello focuses on ref. 1543-1 and describes a panda dial and a scarcer sunray-blue dial with grey sub-dials. It calls the movement a calibre 530 variation of the 30CH family. Because the sources use different calibre wording and the dossier cautions against assuming every 1543 variant has identical specifications, verify the exact reference and movement on the individual watch.

Original versus reissue
Fratello says the panda version inspired the 2013 Longines Heritage 1973 reissue. The reissue has a 40 mm case and a different movement, so it is not the same watch as the vintage 1543-1.
What to check
- Ask for clear photographs of the dial, case, movement, and reference markings; compare them with reliable reference material.
- Check for refinished dials, replacement hands, case polishing, and undisclosed movement work.
- Request service documentation and consider an independent watchmaker’s inspection before buying.
Fratello’s 2021 guide estimated approximately €5,000–€7,500, depending on condition. Treat that as a dated editorial estimate, not a current valuation.

Fratello says the 8229 was introduced in 1969, with most examples sold during the 1970s. It describes ref. 8229-1 as a 41 mm stainless-steel chronograph diver offered with black, orange, and Pepsi-style Bakelite bezel variants. The guide identifies a manual-wind calibre C330 and its connection to the Valjoux 72 family.
What to check
The Bakelite bezel can crack, and Fratello warns that replacement parts may appear on examples. Inspect the bezel and dial closely, and check that the movement and other parts are appropriate for the specific watch. Request clear photographs and service records; a watchmaker can help assess condition and originality.
Fratello’s 2021 guide gave an approximate €4,000–€5,000 estimate. This is historical context only; the dossier contains no verified current comparable-sale data.
4. Longines Ultra-Chron diver ref. 7970: high-beat automatic diver
Fratello describes the Ultra-Chron diver ref. 7970 as an approximately 40 mm stainless-steel watch with an orange-and-black Bakelite bezel and automatic calibre 431, running at 36,000 vibrations per hour. The guide gives a date at three o’clock and a stated 40-hour power reserve.

Fratello identifies five iterations, ref. 7970-1 through 7970-5, with differences in dial and hand design. It also notes that a small number of examples have “Chronometer” markings; do not generalize that detail to every 7970. Verify the specific variant and markings on the watch you are considering.
What to check
- Compare the suffix, dial, and hands against reliable examples of that iteration.
- Inspect the Bakelite bezel for cracks and check the dial and movement for signs of replacement or undisclosed work.
- Ask when calibre 431 was last serviced. Fratello says high-frequency calibres require regular service; have a specialist assess the watch.
- Do not use the watch in water based on its vintage diver designation. Have its condition and water resistance assessed professionally.
Fratello’s 2021 estimate was approximately €1,000–€2,000 depending on condition. It is not a current market quote.
5. Longines Ultra-Quartz ref. 8284: an experimental early quartz watch
Fratello’s 2021 guide describes the steel ref. 8284 as one of two Ultra-Quartz models introduced with calibre 6512; the other was the 18-karat-gold ref. 8483. It says the watch was presented publicly in 1970 and went on sale in 1971. The movement used an unusual cybernetic system rather than the conventional integrated-circuit quartz architecture that later became standard.
The guide reports that Longines later replaced failed Ultra-Quartz movements with regular quartz calibre 744 when parts were unavailable. The dossier does not verify current manufacturer serviceability, so establish the movement fitted to any individual watch and its service history before buying.

What to check
- Ask for a clear movement photograph to establish whether calibre 6512 is present.
- Ask whether the watch has been converted to calibre 744 and require any modification to be disclosed.
- Seek a specialist’s assessment of the movement and service history; do not judge the watch only by whether it currently keeps time.
Which 1970s Longines should you choose?
| If you want | Consider | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A high-frequency automatic | Admiral 8581-2 | Calibre 431 and a sporty 1970s design, as described by Fratello. |
| A high-beat diver | Ultra-Chron diver 7970 | Calibre 431 in a diver format, with Bakelite bezel condition to assess. |
| A vintage flyback chronograph | Conquest 1543 / 1543-1 | Swatch Group documents the 1973 ref. 1543 as a flyback; verify variant details. |
| A chronograph diver | 8229-1 | Distinctive bezel options and chronograph-diver presence; inspect originality closely. |
| An early quartz experiment | Ultra-Quartz 8284 | Its appeal depends substantially on identifying the installed movement. |
Historical price estimates, not current values
These are the approximate ranges Fratello published in 2021, not verified current prices. The research dossier contains no market-wide statistic or current comparable-sale data.
| Reference | Fratello estimate from 2021 |
|---|---|
| Admiral 8581-2 | €800–€2,000 |
| Conquest 1543-1 | €5,000–€7,500 |
| Chronograph Diver 8229-1 | €4,000–€5,000 |
| Ultra-Chron Diver 7970 | €1,000–€2,000 |
| Ultra-Quartz 8284 | No comparable range stated |
Condition, originality, service history, and the exact variant matter. For a current purchase, compare genuinely similar recent sales and budget for professional inspection and service; the old estimates do not establish what a particular watch is worth today.

How to buy a vintage Longines
- Identify the reference and variant. Ask for clear photographs of the dial, case sides, caseback, movement, and reference or serial markings. Compare the details with reliable examples; these are screening clues, not a complete authentication method.
- Verify the movement. Check that the movement is consistent with the specific model and variant. For an Ultra-Quartz 8284, establish whether calibre 6512 is present or a conversion has been made.
- Assess originality and condition. Examine the dial, hands, bezel, case, and bracelet as a set. The 8229-1 and 7970 deserve particular bezel scrutiny because Bakelite can crack and replacement parts may appear.
- Review service evidence. Ask when the watch was last serviced and what work or parts replacement was done. Have a qualified watchmaker inspect high-frequency movements and chronographs rather than relying on the fact that a watch runs.
- Use documentation carefully. Longines offers an Extract from the Archives for historical information. As the article previously noted, an extract is not proof that every component of a complete watch is authentic; seek appropriate specialist assessment when authenticity is in question.
- Treat water resistance as unproven. Do not swim or dive with a vintage watch unless a qualified professional has assessed it and it has passed an appropriate pressure test.
- Compare current prices independently. The only figures in this guide are dated 2021 estimates. Do not use them as current valuations.
FAQ
Which vintage Longines model should I choose to start a collection?
Start by deciding whether you want an automatic, chronograph, diver, or early quartz watch. The Admiral 8581-2 is a high-frequency automatic proposition; the Ultra-Chron diver 7970 adds diver styling. Compare the individual watch’s originality, service history, and condition before choosing.
Is the Conquest 1543-1 the same as the Longines Heritage 1973 reissue?
No. Fratello describes the 2013 Heritage 1973 reissue as having a 40 mm case and a different movement. It is distinct from the vintage Conquest 1543-1.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat should I inspect on a Longines 8229-1?
Pay close attention to the Bakelite bezel, which Fratello says can crack, and ask about replacement parts. Also request clear photographs of the dial and movement, service records, and an independent inspection if needed.
How can I tell which movement is in an Ultra-Quartz 8284?
Ask for a clear movement photograph and a specialist’s assessment. Fratello says some watches were later fitted with regular quartz calibre 744 instead of the original calibre 6512, so any conversion should be disclosed.
Are the prices in this guide current?
No. The listed estimates come from Fratello’s 2021 guide and are historical context only. The supplied research does not establish current comparable-sale prices.
Bottom line
Choose among these Longines watches by the kind of collecting you want to do: high-frequency automatic, flyback chronograph, chronograph diver, high-beat diver, or early quartz technology. For any of them, verify the individual watch’s variant, movement, originality, and service history; treat the 2021 price estimates as historical only.
