Five Omega watches stand out from the 2000s for very different reasons: the Seamaster Apnea’s unusual freediving timer, the hefty Ploprof 1200M, a limited Schumacher Speedmaster, the first-generation Planet Ocean, and an Olympic Aqua Terra chronograph. This is a curated selection, not a ranking of every Omega released between 2000 and 2009. The models and specifications below are reported in Jorg Weppelink’s December 18, 2021 Fratello buying guide; check the exact reference and individual watch before buying.
Which 2000s Omega is right for you?
| Model | Best fit for | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Seamaster Professional 300M Apnea, ref. 2595.30.00 | A collector drawn to a distinctive freediving chronograph | Thick case and a specialized 14-minute display |
| Seamaster Professional Ploprof 1200M, ref. 224.30.55.21.01.001 | Someone who wants an uncompromising, recognizable professional diver | Approximately 55 × 48 mm and 279 g; try it on if possible |
| Speedmaster “The Legend,” ref. 3559.32.00 | A buyer seeking a numbered Schumacher-era automatic chronograph | Distinguish the 2004 limited edition from similar 2005 references |
| Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M, ref. 2201.50.00 | A wearer after a more conventional, high-depth Seamaster diver | 42 mm case, 14.5 mm thick; condition and fit remain watch-specific |
| Aqua Terra Chronograph Beijing 2008, ref. 221.10.42.40.01.001 | A collector who values Olympic details and a limited edition | Verify the reference, edition number and caseback markings |
1. Seamaster Professional 300M Apnea: a freediving timer with a twist
Released in 2003, the Apnea was developed with freediver Jacques Mayol, who died in 2001. Its chronograph display sets it apart from a standard dive watch: seven apertures change from silver to red as the chronograph runs, then return to silver after seven minutes. The sequence provides a 14-minute freediving timer.
The steel ref. 2595.30.00 measures 41.5 mm across, 16.5 mm thick, 49 mm lug to lug, and 22 mm between the lugs. Black- and silver-dial versions were offered; the Fratello guide favors the silver dial. Automatic caliber 3601, based on the ETA 2892-A2, is reported with 39 jewels and a 44-hour power reserve. The thick case accommodates the additional complication module, so this is a specialized choice rather than the slimmest way to wear a Seamaster.
2. Seamaster Professional Ploprof 1200M: the boldest wrist presence
The modern Ploprof arrived in 2009 as a successor to the 1970s Seamaster 600 “PloProf.” Its asymmetric steel case is approximately 55 × 48 mm. The integrated screw-down crown sits on the left, while an orange pusher unlocks the rotating dive bezel. Those unusual controls and proportions are central to the design, not discreet details.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The ref. 224.30.55.21.01.001 is listed with automatic Co-Axial caliber 8500 and a 60-hour power reserve. The reported weight is 279 g. Omega offered it with an orange rubber strap or a steel mesh bracelet. Both size and weight can dominate on the wrist, making an in-person fit check especially useful.
3. Speedmaster “The Legend”: check the exact Schumacher reference
Omega released the 42 mm steel Speedmaster “The Legend” ref. 3559.32.00 in 2004 to mark Michael Schumacher’s sixth Formula One championship. Its panda-style dial and steel bezel give it a different look from a typical Moonwatch, and production was limited to 6,000 individually numbered examples, according to the 2021 guide.

Automatic caliber 3301 is a column-wheel chronograph movement; the watch also has a date at six o’clock and a reported 52-hour power reserve. Reference checking matters: the 2004 limited ref. 3559.32.00 is distinct from three regular-production Schumacher Legend references released in 2005: panda ref. 3506.31.00, reverse-panda ref. 3507.51.00, and red-dial ref. 3506.61.00. Similar names and dial families make the number on the watch and its documentation important when assessing a listing.
4. Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M: a first-generation modern diver
The first-generation Planet Ocean launched in 2005 in 42 mm and 45.5 mm sizes. The Fratello selection is the 42 mm steel ref. 2201.50.00, which the guide notes Daniel Craig wore in Quantum of Solace. It measures 14.5 mm thick and is rated to 600 m water resistance; the design includes a helium escape valve at 10 o’clock.

Inside is automatic Co-Axial caliber 2500, with a stated 48-hour power reserve. The first-generation model drew design inspiration from the 1960s Seamaster 300 ref. 165.024. Of the two launch sizes, 42 mm is the more restrained option, though thickness, condition and fit still depend on the individual watch.

- Match the reference to the watch. Pay particular attention to the 2004 Schumacher limited edition versus the similar 2005 regular-production models, and to the Beijing Aqua Terra’s Olympic markings.
- Assess fit, not just diameter. Thickness, lug-to-lug length, case shape, weight, and the fitted strap or bracelet all affect how a watch wears. The Ploprof is the clearest example, but try any candidate on if you can.
- Evaluate the individual example. Review condition, authenticity, service records, and what is included with the watch. The model descriptions here are not a substitute for inspecting a particular example.
- Get specialist help when needed. A qualified vintage Omega specialist can help assess a watch and its documentation. The Fratello guide also suggests the books Omega — A Journey Through Time and Moonwatch Only; check their availability and editions when looking for them.
The Fratello article’s euro price ranges were estimates published in December 2021. They do not establish current transaction values, so use a current market check rather than treating those figures as present-day buying advice.
