These six watches make a case for generous proportions: large dials and cases support aviation-style legibility, substantial tool-watch functions, or unconventional movement displays. That is an editorial argument, not a rule that any watch objectively needs a particular size. The specifications and prices below are those reported by Robin Nooy in Monochrome Watches’ guide dated 7 July 2024; prices are historical figures, not current quotes.
What makes a large watch work?
A large case can be part of a watch’s design rather than a measurement chosen in isolation. On a pilot’s watch, the broad dial can reinforce quick reading; on a diver, the case can house a high-pressure construction; on an openworked watch, the extra space can make the movement itself the display. The six examples below illustrate different reasons for substantial dimensions—not a universal ideal wrist size.
Robin Nooy summarized the premise in the 7 July 2024 Monochrome Watches guide: “Despite this tendency to go smaller, some watches simply need a large case to work and work well.” This is the guide’s point of view, not an objective sizing standard.

Why these watches use their size differently
IWC Big Pilot Top Gun Mojave Desert: a broad aviation-style instrument
At 46mm across, the IWC is the largest by diameter in this selection, and its 14.6mm thickness gives it additional presence. Its sand-coloured ceramic case and matching strap make the scale part of a coherent, monochrome look. The seven-day reserve and its indicator give the broad dial a functional reason to display more information, while the soft-iron inner case is another element of its instrument-watch character. The article lists 250 pieces, so it is the limited edition among these six with a stated edition size other than the Hublot.
Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore: a large sports-watch canvas
The 43mm Royal Oak Offshore is the smallest in diameter here, though its 14.3mm thickness remains substantial. Its gradient blue-grey dial, large date and Méga Tapisserie pattern use the dial area as a visual feature, while the rubber-coated bezel and strap continue the sporty materials palette. It is non-limited according to the article.
Rank #2
- Field-Inspired Design: Cream dial with full Arabic numerals and 24-hour military time for classic outdoor styling
- Polished Case: Silver-tone 38 mm brass case with mineral glass crystal offers a refined, durable finish
- Comfort Fit: Adjustable olive-green 20 mm nylon slip-thru strap fits wrists up to 8 inches for easy, versatile wear
- INDIGLO Backlight: INDIGLO night light allows you to tell the time in the dark with the push of a button
- Water-Resistant: Safe to 30 m / 100 ft — withstands splashes or brief immersion, but not suitable for swimming or bathing
Hublot Big Bang MP-11 Water Blue Sapphire: space for the movement on display
The Hublot’s 45mm sapphire case and openworked dial put its unusual movement at the center of the design. Seven coupled barrels provide a reported 14-day reserve, a specification that is closely tied to the watch’s visual identity. The article identifies this as a 50-piece limited edition. Its 30m water-resistance rating is lower than those of the other listed models, so its dramatic case material and movement display—not a high water-resistance figure—are the salient points in this comparison.
Rolex Deepsea yellow gold: depth capability and mass
The 44mm Deepsea is 17.7mm thick, making it the thickest watch in the group. The guide reports a weight above 300g and a 3,900m water-resistance rating, alongside an 18k yellow-gold case and bracelet, titanium caseback and Glidelock extension system. Here, size is associated with an imposing construction and deep-diving specification, as well as a conspicuous precious-metal finish.

Zenith Defy Extreme Mirror: a chronograph built around speed
The 45mm polished-steel Defy Extreme Mirror pairs a 12-sided bezel with an El Primero 9004 automatic chronograph. The article describes separate regulating organs: 36,000 vibrations per hour for timekeeping and 360,000 for the chronograph, which displays 1/100-second timing. Its case and dial presentation give that high-frequency chronograph a visually assertive setting. The source does not state a power-reserve figure.
Hamilton Khaki Aviation Converter Auto Chrono: slide-rule utility at the entry end of this group
At 44mm, the Hamilton uses a bidirectional slide-rule bezel, chronograph and day/date display in a stainless-steel aviation-style design. The article positions it as the more affordable selection in the group and reports two configurations: leather strap or steel bracelet. The bezel is a functional feature, but a slide rule takes practice; the listed dimensions do not establish whether its scale will be easy for a particular wearer to read.

How to choose among them
- For the strongest aviation-instrument character: compare the IWC’s power-reserve display and seven-day reserve with the Hamilton’s slide-rule bezel, chronograph and day/date. The Hamilton is the group’s lower-priced option in the historical figures, while the IWC has the longest stated reserve outside the Hublot.
- For a movement-led display: the Hublot is the obvious outlier, with an openworked presentation and 14-day reserve. Its 30m rating and 50-piece limitation are important distinctions from the other watches.
- For high water resistance: the Rolex’s reported 3,900m rating is far above the other figures in this selection; the Zenith is rated to 200m, the Royal Oak Offshore and Hamilton to 100m, the IWC to 60m, and the Hublot to 30m. These ratings alone do not establish suitability for a specific activity or replace manufacturer guidance.
- For a substantial steel sports watch: the Royal Oak Offshore and Zenith share steel construction but differ in emphasis: the AP has a large-date display and patterned dial; the Zenith centers on a high-frequency chronograph and mirror-polished case.
- For precious-metal presence: the yellow-gold Rolex is the only watch here reported with a precious-metal case and bracelet; its stated weight above 300g makes trying the complete watch especially relevant.
What case size does—and does not—tell you about fit
Diameter is only one dimension. These six watches range from 43mm to 46mm across, but their thickness spans 14.3mm to 17.7mm, and their materials range from steel and ceramic to sapphire and gold. The article provides no lug-to-lug measurements, wrist measurements, or comfort testing, so it cannot establish how any model will fit a particular wrist. Weight is reported only for the Rolex.
If you are considering one, try the exact reference and configuration in person where possible. Check whether the case extends beyond your wrist, how the thickness sits under a sleeve, whether the strap or bracelet can be adjusted securely, and whether you can read the dial and operate its bezel comfortably. A 44mm watch on a bracelet can feel quite different from a 44mm watch on a strap, and a diameter comparison cannot capture that difference by itself.
