There is no objectively “best” 1980s Rolex: the right choice depends on how you will wear it and the condition, configuration, service history, and price of the specific watch. For a second time zone, the GMT-Master II is the clearest decade-specific candidate. For a date-equipped sports watch or a no-date option, consider the Submariner family—but treat its historical water-resistance rating as history, not proof that an individual vintage watch is safe to swim with.

What defines a Rolex from this decade?
Rolex characterizes the 1970s and 1980s as a second generation of Oyster Perpetual Professional watches. Its 2021 history document places the GMT-Master II in that context and says the company began using steel from the 904L family for cases in 1985. The official histories establish useful model milestones, but do not provide a complete reference-by-reference chronology for every Rolex family made between 1980 and 1989. Avoid treating a broad decade label as confirmation of a particular watch’s original parts or production date.
How to compare individual watches
A model shortlist is only a starting point. Compare actual examples using the same criteria, and do not assume that two watches with the same model name are equivalent.

- Fit and configuration: Examine the exact case, dial, bezel, and bracelet. Ask for documentation supporting the watch’s identity and configuration; a model name or seller description is not verification.
- Condition and service record: Request service records and a condition assessment for the individual watch. Rolex describes its service network, including a Geneva Restoration Atelier for exceptional historic watches, but that does not establish the likely price, parts availability, or outcome for a specific 1980s example. - Water use: Do not infer present-day waterproofness from a vintage model’s original rating. Seek an assessment of the actual watch before exposing it to water.
What Rolex Certified Pre-Owned does—and does not—cover
Rolex Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) is a defined sales program, not a label for every second-hand Rolex. In the United States, Rolex says qualifying watches at least two years old are sold through participating Official Rolex Retailers. The program includes workshop authentication, full servicing, and a two-year international guarantee from purchase. Confirm current program terms and availability with a participating retailer. Rolex says CPO verifies a watch’s original configuration, while noting exceptions for some older watches concerning waterproofness and original precision. A practical buying checklist
- Decide what matters most. Settle whether you need a second time zone, a date display, or a particular fit before comparing listings.
- Identify the exact watch. Record the reference and assess the case, dial, bezel, and bracelet. Ask the seller for supporting documentation and clear images.
- Review its history. Request available service records, provenance, and a current condition assessment. Treat missing documentation as uncertainty, not as evidence of originality or condition.
- Choose a sales route with clear protections. If considering CPO, verify that the seller is a participating Official Rolex Retailer and ask what the program covers for that watch. For any other seller, review the seller’s own authentication, returns, and warranty terms.
- Compare like with like. Evaluate asking prices only after checking that the watches being compared have meaningfully similar configurations, condition, records, and provenance.
- Make water use a separate decision. Do not rely on a historical depth specification; obtain an assessment of the individual watch before using it in water.
