The A3818 stands out for its vertically brushed blue dial and pyramid-track scale; the A3817 pairs a tonneau-shaped steel case with the A386’s tricolour dial. The A386 itself is important context, but it launched in 1969—not during the 1970s. Choosing between these watches depends on the specific example’s condition, originality, and documentation, not just its reference.
Which Zenith watches from the 1970s are worth buying?
The available historical evidence points to two 1971 El Primero references as useful starting points. They have notably different dial and case designs, while the 1969 A386 helps explain the family’s tricolour-counter look.
| Reference | Launch date and identity | Case and dial traits | Production figure |
|---|---|---|---|
| A3818 | Zenith dates its debut to 1971. | Oxidized blue dial with vertical satin brushing and a “pyramid track” fractional scale, as described by Zenith. | 1,000 examples in total, according to Zenith’s 2021 heritage material. |
| A3817 | Zenith dates it to 1971 and places it among the early steel El Primero models. | Tonneau-shaped steel case with the A386’s tricolour dial, according to Zenith’s revival release. | Not stated in the cited Zenith material. |
| A386 | Launched in 1969; a design comparator, not a 1970s launch. | Known for its tricolour counters and central place in Zenith’s El Primero heritage. | Not stated in the cited Zenith material. |
That comparison identifies historical design differences; it does not establish which reference is better value. Current prices, inventory, or sales results are not established here, and no reference alone tells you whether a particular watch is sound or original.
How do I identify a Zenith El Primero A3818?
Start with the features Zenith associates with the reference: a 1971 debut, an oxidized blue dial with vertical satin brushing, and a fractional scale Zenith calls the “pyramid track.” Zenith states that only 1,000 A3818 examples were produced in total in its 2021 heritage material. That total is historical context, not proof that a watch offered for sale is an A3818 or that its parts are original.
Compare the claimed reference and serial documentation with the watch itself, including the dial, case, and movement. A distinctive dial can help you know what to look for, but it cannot authenticate an individual listing on its own.
What distinguishes the A3817 from the A386?
The A3817 combines a sportier tonneau-shaped steel case from the early steel El Primero family with the A386’s tricolour dial, according to Zenith. It debuted in 1971. The A386, by contrast, launched in 1969; its tricolour counters are important design context, but its launch predates the decade covered by this guide.

- Automatic movement
- Silver chronograph dial
- Brown leather strap
- Rose gold case
- Water resistant to 330 feet (100 M): suitable for snorkeling, as well as swimming, but not diving
This distinction matters when searching listings: a watch can be relevant to the story of 1970s Zenith design without being a model introduced in the 1970s. Confirm the specific reference rather than relying on a broad description such as “vintage El Primero.”
What should I check before buying an individual watch?
Historical reference details cannot establish the condition, originality, or service history of a seller’s watch. Assess the example being offered and ask for evidence that supports its identity and condition.
Rank #3
- Used Book in Good Condition
- Reference and serial documentation: Ask for clear records and photographs of the movement and case serials, and check that the information corresponds to the claimed watch.
- Dial and case: Examine their condition and whether their features are consistent with the claimed reference. Ask the seller to explain any refinishing, replacement, or restoration.
- Movement: Request a clear account of its operating condition and recent servicing, with supporting service records where available.
- Originality: Ask which parts are original, which have been replaced, and what evidence supports those claims.
- Seller protections: Review the seller’s documentation, return terms, and process for resolving a mismatch between the listing and the delivered watch.
These are buyer checks, not guarantees. The cited Zenith material describes model history and manufacturer services; it does not authenticate or certify an unrelated seller’s listing.
Can Zenith verify a vintage watch’s identity?
Zenith describes two different services. An extract from its registers can identify a watch’s model, functions, caliber, and production date using its movement and case serial numbers. A certificate of origin involves an in-depth examination at Zenith’s Le Locle manufacture. An extract is documentation from the registers; the certificate involves examination. Neither description should be treated as a blanket assurance about every aspect of a watch’s current condition or a seller’s claims.

Zenith’s official timeline recounts that the company planned to cease El Primero production in 1975 and credits watchmaker Charles Vermot with secretly preserving its technical plans and tools. This is Zenith’s account of the movement’s history, not evidence about the provenance of a particular watch. Zenith also describes its Icons program as sourcing, restoring, and certifying vintage watches; that program does not establish that an unrelated watch on the market was restored or certified by the manufacture.
