Its red-orange dial takes its cue from sunrise over Japan’s Hotaka mountain range, while the specially adjusted Caliber 9R96 combines a GMT hand and 12-hour chronograph with an approximately 72-hour power reserve.
What is the Grand Seiko SBGC275?
SBGC275 is a large titanium sports chronograph with a GMT function. Grand Seiko announced it in April 2024 as a limited edition celebrating the 20th anniversary of its 9R Spring Drive series. The edition totals 700 watches worldwide; the Japanese announcement specified 500 for Japan. Its announced release was July 2024. Grand Seiko Japan’s 9 April 2024 announcement and Grand Seiko Australia’s announcement identify it as part of the Sport Collection.
What does the Shinshu Sunrise dial represent?
The dial is inspired by the brief change in light at summer sunrise over the Hotaka peaks in Shinshu, central Japan. Grand Seiko describes red sunlight reaching the summits and gradually spreading across the mountain. The textured surface and its changing red-orange appearance are intended to evoke that scene.
The colour comes from what Grand Seiko calls an optical multilayer coating, rather than conventional painted coloration. The company says stacked thin films are deposited using physical vapor deposition; the resulting hue shifts with viewing angle and light, while the dial’s pressed texture remains visible. Grand Seiko Australia described the effect in its 9 April 2024 announcement: “The colour-changing dial, which represents this momentary light show, is made possible by a patented dial-coating process to be known as ‘Optical Multilayer Coating.’”

What does Caliber 9R96 offer?
The SBGC275 is powered by automatic Spring Drive Caliber 9R96, which Grand Seiko describes as a specially adjusted, higher-accuracy version of the 9R86. Spring Drive combines a mechanical mainspring power source with electronic regulation; its seconds hand moves smoothly rather than ticking in discrete steps.
- Accuracy: Grand Seiko specifies an average of ±10 seconds per month, equivalent to ±0.5 seconds per day, for 9R96. The Japanese release says the figure applies at 5°C–35°C when worn. It compares this with ±15 seconds per month for standard Caliber 9R86. These are manufacturer specifications, not a guarantee of the result for an individual watch.
- Power reserve: Approximately 72 hours at full winding.
- GMT: A 24-hour hand allows a second time zone to be tracked.
- Chronograph: Stopwatch timing runs up to 12 hours.
- Jewels: 50.
The Japanese specifications and Australian launch announcement provide the movement details. Grand Seiko Japan’s 2024 release gives the stated temperature range for the accuracy specification.
Case, bracelet and specifications
The case and bracelet use high-intensity titanium, called Bright Titanium in the Japanese announcement. Grand Seiko Australia said the material is about 30% lighter than stainless steel; this is the manufacturer’s material comparison, not a published measured weight for the SBGC275 itself. The case design draws on the Grand Seiko lion, with angular, claw-inspired lugs, alternating Zaratsu-polished and hairline-finished surfaces, and a lower center of gravity intended to improve wearing comfort.

| Specification | SBGC275 |
|---|---|
| Case material | High-intensity titanium (Bright Titanium in the Japanese release) |
| Case diameter | 44.5 mm |
| Case thickness | 16.8 mm |
| Length and lug width | 50 mm length and 23 mm lug width, as listed on the US Boutique page |
| Crystal and caseback | Dual-curved sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating; see-through screw caseback |
| Water resistance | 20 bar (200 m) |
| Magnetic resistance | 4,800 A/m |
The 44.5 mm diameter and 16.8 mm thickness make this a substantial watch on paper; titanium may reduce material weight, but it does not reduce the case’s dimensions. The specifications above are from Grand Seiko’s Japanese and Australian 2024 announcements, with the length and lug width listed on the US Boutique product page.
