It can—but the value is conditional, not automatic. The IWC Pilot’s Watch Automatic 36 puts the brand’s recognizable pilot-watch design in a compact 36 mm case. Whether it is a good buy depends on your preference for that size, the exact reference and condition, and the price available now. The original value argument was made in 2021, so its prices should not be mistaken for current quotes.
What the 36 mm value claim means
Thor Svaboe’s 3 August 2021 Time+Tide opinion article argued that the Automatic 36 offered an appealing way into IWC’s pilot-watch look, especially compared with larger models. Its headline framed downsizing as opening up value, but the underlying case was about a smaller size and lower price—not evidence that 36 mm watches are inherently better value.
Svaboe cited lucky pre-owned examples at about US$3,000–3,500, a new Automatic 36 at US$6,100, and a 43 mm IWC comparator at US$9,900. Those are the author’s price claims from 2021, not current offers. He also joked, “I’ll never take the stick of a single-engined Piper, never mind break the sound barrier in an F15.” That personal line helps convey his preference for the watch’s aviation styling; it is not a technical or performance claim. What you get in the black-dial IW324010
The specific black-dial steel model is reference IW324010. IWC lists a 36 mm case, 10.6 mm height, automatic calibre 35111, date display, screw-in crown and 6 bar water resistance. The manufacturer also specifies a soft-iron inner case for magnetic protection and a domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides; it says the glass is secured against displacement from a drop in air pressure. There is an unresolved reserve discrepancy in IWC’s own published information: the product page gives 50 hours, while the linked manual says approximately 42 hours. Treat 50 hours as the product-page specification and note that the manual differs; the available information does not establish why. IWC Pilot’s Watch Automatic 36 manual.
Do not assume specifications for another reference carry over. IWC’s past-collection listing identifies IW324001 as a grey-dial variant and gives it a 42-hour reserve, along with a 36 mm case and 6 bar rating. That is not the black-dial IW324010. IWC past-collection listing for IW324001.

How the prices compare—and why dates matter
Later figures give context, but they are not directly comparable to Svaboe’s 2021 prices: they come from different dates and use different price bases. WatchCharts reported an estimated market price of US$4,626 for reference 324010 on 20 September 2026, and listed a US$6,200 retail price as of April 2026. The market figure is an estimate, not a live dealer offer or a guaranteed sale price; the retail figure is WatchCharts’ listing, not an official IWC quote. The table records reported figures, not like-for-like transactions: it does not normalize geography, condition, completeness, warranty, seller or sales basis. Use the current listing for the exact watch you are considering, and compare watches with similar provenance and condition. A pre-owned estimate is not proof that every example is a bargain.

When downsizing makes the watch a better buy for you
The practical case for the Automatic 36 is strongest if you specifically want an IWC pilot-watch design in a smaller case. A 36 mm diameter may suit your proportions or taste better than a larger model, but the cited material does not establish universal wrist fit or independently tested comfort. Try the watch on if possible, and judge the full proportions and wear on your own wrist rather than relying on diameter alone.
Before treating a listing as a value, check that it is the reference you intend to buy, then weigh the asking price against condition, included accessories, seller terms and warranty. The 2021 comparison with a 43 mm model shows what Svaboe considered attractive at the time; it is not a standardized contemporary cost comparison between equivalent watches.

A practical decision checklist
- Confirm the reference: IW324010 is the black-dial steel model discussed here; do not substitute IW324001 specifications.
- Decide whether 36 mm is the point: buy the compact profile because it suits your preference, not because a smaller diameter guarantees a lower price or better fit.
- Compare the right kind of price: distinguish official retail, seller asking prices and secondary-market estimates, and keep their dates attached.
- Assess the individual watch: compare condition, completeness, seller and warranty before judging a pre-owned price.
- Read the reserve specification cautiously: IWC’s product page says 50 hours, while its manual says approximately 42 hours.
