A sapphire watch crystal can be scratched, and it can crack or shatter after a sufficiently hard impact. Sapphire is exceptionally scratch-resistant, not unbreakable: hardness helps resist surface abrasion, but it does not guarantee impact strength.
Why sapphire resists scratches but can still break
Watch sapphire is generally synthetic sapphire, a transparent form of corundum. Casio, Oris and IWC describe sapphire crystal as 9 on the Mohs hardness scale; Rado gives a separate figure of 2,500 Vickers for its sapphire crystal. These are manufacturer-published material ratings, not independent tests of every watch crystal.

Mohs measures resistance to scratching by comparison with other minerals. It does not measure how well a particular crystal survives a drop or a blow. A material as hard as or harder than sapphire can scratch it, and hard particles may be carried by objects that seem ordinary. Rado cautions about particles found in sand, granite and nail files. The claim that only diamond can scratch sapphire is therefore too absolute.
Impact is a different issue. Timex says sapphire can be prone to shattering under heavy impact, and Oris describes it as more impact-sensitive than mineral crystal. The outcome also depends on the crystal’s shape and thickness, how its edges are supported, the bezel design and the impact itself. Manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal breakage threshold or rate.

- Size - Diameter: 30mm / 1.18" (diameter tolerance is ±0.05mm.); edge thickness: 1.5mm / 0.06". Please use a precision caliper to measure the diameter/thickness before purchasing. Do not use tools with low precision such as soft rulers, straight rulers.
- Material - Made of quality sapphire crystal glass, watch lens provide excellent hardness and scratch resistance, durable and long-lasting. The hardness test of sapphire is 9, second only to diamond. The flat round sapphire glass has a smooth surface, adding a touch of sophistication to the watch.
- Features - Clear and transparent, scratch-resistant, wear-resistant, no scratches, polishing and chamfering surface technology. Providing clear dial visibility, ensuring accuracy without distortion. The sapphire glass adopts a flat round design, providing a classic and elegant look to the watch.
- Applications - Sapphire glass lenses are widely used in luxury watches, sports watches, dive watches and fashion watches. These lenses are quality, durable, highly scratch-resistant to withstand rough use, water-resistant, and clear enough to add a touch of elegance to fashion watches.
- Notes - Clean the sapphire glass lens with a soft, lint-free cloth. While sapphire glass is very durable, avoid strong impacts or hitting the watch against hard surfaces to prevent damage. Although sapphire glass is water-resistant, make sure your watch is also water-resistant before placing it in water.
Is the mark in the sapphire or its coating?
Some sapphire crystals have an anti-reflective coating to reduce glare. A visible mark alone does not show whether the sapphire itself is scratched or the coating is damaged. The manufacturer guidance cited here does not offer a reliable at-home test to tell the two apart.
Have a watchmaker inspect the mark before using abrasive polish or a scratch-removal compound. Polishing guidance for acrylic does not establish that home polishing is safe or effective for sapphire.

How sapphire compares with mineral and acrylic crystals
| Material | Scratch resistance | Impact trade-off | Repair consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sapphire | Very high; manufacturer guidance commonly rates it 9 Mohs. | Can crack or shatter under heavy impact; Oris describes it as more impact-sensitive than mineral. | Replacement must fit the exact watch. |
| Mineral | Less scratch-resistant than sapphire, according to Timex. | Timex describes it as more shatter-resistant than sapphire, making it a possible compromise for impact tolerance. | Timex says scratches or chips cannot be buffed like acrylic; replacement may be needed. |
| Acrylic | Scratches more readily. | Timex describes it as shatter-resistant compared with harder crystal choices. | Small scratches can be buffed, according to Timex and TAG Heuer. |
This is a broad material comparison, not a guarantee for every watch. Construction and the particular impact affect the result.
What to do if your sapphire crystal is scratched or damaged
For a suspected scratch or coating mark
- Check the exact model’s official specifications or manual to confirm its crystal type; Casio recommends those sources for identification.
- Ask a watchmaker to assess a visible mark before trying an abrasive product. A mark may involve an anti-reflective coating rather than the sapphire substrate.
- Do not assume a scratch-removal kit will repair sapphire. The cited manufacturer guidance supports buffing acrylic, not home polishing sapphire.
For a crack or shattered crystal
- Stop wearing the watch and have it assessed by the watch’s maker or a qualified repairer.
- Ask the repairer to check the crystal and seals. Bremont warns that an impact can dislodge seals on its watches and allow water to enter; the relevant maker should advise on other models.
- Do not assume the watch remains water-resistant after impact damage. Have its condition checked before exposing it to water.
- If replacement is needed, match the crystal to the exact make and model. The word “sapphire” or a generic measurement alone does not establish compatibility.
Choosing a crystal material
No material is best for every wearer. Sapphire prioritizes resistance to everyday scratching; mineral offers a compromise that Timex describes as more shatter-resistant; acrylic is easier to scratch but can be buffed when lightly marked. Consider the kinds of contact the watch is likely to face, the consequences of impact, and whether you prefer polishing or replacement if damage occurs.
