Yes—many Samsung Galaxy Watch batteries can be replaced, but they are internal, not user-swappable. The repair means opening the case, handling small connectors and adhesive, and resealing the watch. The exact model determines whether a battery and a reliable repair guide are available. The biggest trade-off is water resistance: do not assume a repaired watch retains its original rating unless it is properly resealed and tested.

Which Samsung watches have documented battery replacements?

“Sealed” does not mean impossible to repair. It means the battery is inside a case held together by screws, adhesive, gaskets, or a combination. iFixit has battery-replacement guides for the original Galaxy Watch, Watch4, and Watch5 families. That documentation does not establish that every later model has a consumer-available battery or a complete DIY procedure.

Watch family What is established Practical note
Original Galaxy Watch, 42 mm and 46 mm iFixit publishes a battery guide and lists batteries. Match the battery to the exact size and model. The guide rates the repair moderate and estimates 40 minutes to 1 hour; this is a guide estimate, not a promise for a first-time repair. See the original Galaxy Watch battery guide.
Galaxy Watch4 and Watch4 Classic iFixit publishes a Watch4 battery guide and lists Watch4 batteries. Internal disassembly is delicate. A 40/42 mm battery is not interchangeable with a 44/46 mm battery. See the Watch4 battery guide.
Galaxy Watch5 and Watch5 Pro iFixit publishes a Watch5 battery guide. Confirm the exact model and battery part; do not assume one Watch5 battery fits every variant. The guide estimates 20–45 minutes and rates the repair moderate. See the Watch5 battery guide.
Galaxy Watch6, Watch7, Watch Ultra, Watch FE, and newer models Samsung’s parts catalog lists watch models, but the available evidence does not verify a public battery part and complete battery procedure for every version. Check the exact model and part before considering DIY. A model’s presence in a catalog alone does not prove that its battery is sold to consumers. Check Samsung’s self-repair catalog.
Earlier Gear and Galaxy Watch Active models Repairability and parts availability vary by model. Identify the exact model number before buying parts or arranging service.

The marketing name and case diameter are not enough to identify a compatible battery. Check the model number on the watch or in the Galaxy Wearable app; families include identifiers such as SM-R860, SM-R870, SM-R900, SM-R910, SM-R930, and SM-L315. Bluetooth and LTE versions, generations, and case variants can require different parts.

Check the charger and software before replacing the battery

Fast battery drain or a watch that will not turn on does not prove the battery has failed. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance treats the battery, charger, connection, and watch itself as possible causes. Start with the charging setup and symptoms before opening the case.

  • Try the original or a Samsung-approved charging dock, and check that the watch is aligned correctly.
  • Inspect the watch, dock, and cable for debris or visible damage. If there may have been liquid or impact damage, get service advice rather than assuming a new battery will fix it.
  • Update the watch software and installed apps. Power-hungry apps and settings—including GPS, LTE, always-on display, health sensors, and some watch faces—can increase drain. Extreme temperatures can also affect battery behavior.
  • If the watch is paired with a compatible Samsung phone, run a battery diagnostic in Samsung Members.
  • Note whether the watch shows a charging animation, vibrates, or responds to the buttons. No charging animation can point to the dock, alignment, connection, or charging circuitry as well as the battery. A vibrating watch with a blank screen may have a deeply depleted battery, but display or board failure is also possible.

Samsung provides troubleshooting for reduced battery life, charging or power-on problems, and a watch that vibrates but does not display an image. If those checks do not resolve the issue, request a diagnosis; a battery swap will not repair a failed charging coil, motherboard, display, or power-management circuit.

Can you replace the battery yourself?

Yes, if there is a model-specific procedure and a correctly matched battery, but this is moderate small-electronics repair—not a simple watch-battery change. The rear cover must be opened, adhesive or a gasket released, internal connectors handled, and the case closed with replacement sealing material. A slip can damage a flex cable, sensor, display, or lithium-ion cell.

Depending on the model, the work may require a Tri-point Y00 and Phillips screwdriver, opening picks or a thin opening tool, a spudger, ESD-safe tweezers, a heat source to soften adhesive, and replacement adhesive or a gasket. The guide times cited above are estimates from iFixit, not guaranteed completion times for inexperienced owners.

What does a battery replacement involve?

The precise teardown differs by watch, so use the guide for the exact model rather than treating these steps as a universal procedure. The iFixit Watch4 and Watch5 guides advise reducing the battery charge below approximately 25% before disassembly to reduce the risk of a dangerous thermal event if the cell is damaged.

  1. Confirm the watch model and a compatible replacement battery. Back up watch and health data where possible.
  2. Remove the watch from its charger, power it down, and remove the band if it obstructs access.
  3. Reduce the battery charge below approximately 25% before opening, following the model-specific guide.
  4. Remove the rear-cover screws and carefully soften and release the adhesive or gasket.
  5. Lift the cover without catching the sensor or charging flex cables, then disconnect the cables required by that model.
  6. Remove any components that obstruct battery access. Release the old battery without puncturing, bending, or crushing it.
  7. Install the matching replacement and reconnect the internal cables.
  8. Before final sealing, test power, charging, display and touch, buttons or bezel, sensors, Bluetooth, and other functions relevant to the model.
  9. Replace the adhesive or gasket and close the case evenly. A new seal is not proof that factory water resistance has been restored.

Is DIY replacement safe?

A lithium-ion battery repair carries risks of fire, injury, and damage; it is not safe in every condition or for every owner. Do not puncture, crush, bend, short, or aggressively pry against the cell. Keep metal tools away from exposed battery contacts and use eye protection.

Will the watch still be water-resistant after repair?

Do not count on it. Samsung describes Galaxy Watches as water-resistant under specified conditions, not waterproof under all conditions, and notes that impacts can reduce water resistance. Opening the case adds another possible failure point. A replacement adhesive strip or gasket may help seal the case, but it does not establish that the repaired watch meets its original IP or ATM rating.

Unless the repairer confirms the case was resealed and tested, treat the watch as potentially less water-resistant. Avoid swimming, showering, diving, and deliberate water exposure. Before authorizing professional service, ask what the provider guarantees about sealing and testing; do not assume every repair service restores the original rating. Samsung’s guidance on water resistance and its limitations explains why the rating depends on specified conditions.

Samsung service, an independent shop, DIY, or replacement?

Option Best suited to Trade-offs to check
Samsung service Owners who prioritize manufacturer support and model-specific handling. Availability and price depend on model and country. Samsung’s U.S. support page offers repair and support pathways, but no universal battery-replacement price is established for every model. Request a quote for the exact watch before authorizing service. Samsung wearable support.
Independent repair shop Owners seeking local service or a professional repair when DIY parts or skills are lacking. Ask whether the battery is genuine, OEM-equivalent, or third-party; what warranty applies; whether a new seal is used; and whether water-resistance testing is included. Confirm diagnostic, shipping, and failure-related fees in advance.
DIY Owners with a supported model, compatible parts, suitable tools, and electronics-repair experience. Lowest labor cost, but the owner takes on the risk of damage, uncertain sealing, parts quality, and the time required. Parts cost is not the total repair cost.
Replace the watch Owners whose watch has several faults, hard-to-source parts, or a repair quote close to a suitable replacement. Higher upfront cost, but avoids spending on a repair that may not resolve other faults. Consider compatibility, features, software support, and the effort of transferring data or service.

Samsung’s U.S. repair page does not establish a single price for all models; service access and quotes can vary by country. Warranty and service eligibility after opening the case also depend on the circumstances and applicable terms. Check with Samsung or the seller before DIY if warranty coverage matters.

Is battery replacement worth it?

Compare the full repair quote—not just the battery’s listed price—with the cost of a comparable replacement watch. Include labor, tools, adhesive or gasket, diagnostics, shipping, and any water-resistance testing. The repair is more compelling when the watch is otherwise in excellent condition, has features you value, and has remaining software support. Replacement becomes more sensible when the watch also has screen, button, bezel, charging, or sensor problems; the right part cannot be verified; or the repair cost approaches that of a newer watch.

For an independent repair, ask what happens if the watch still will not power on, whether the repair is covered by a warranty, and whether water-resistance testing is part of the service. For a DIY repair, weigh the savings against the possibility of a damaged watch or an unverified seal. A new battery only helps if the battery itself caused the problem.
