The original Hearview Subtitle Glasses are discontinued, and Hearview says they will not be restocked. The company now recommends MYVU Air glasses, but its product pages give conflicting availability signals. Existing owners are told support and app updates will continue; new buyers should check the replacement’s stock, total cost, phone compatibility and return terms before ordering.
What Hearview subtitle glasses do
Hearview Subtitle Glasses were designed to turn nearby speech into text displayed in the wearer’s field of view. They are an accessibility aid for Deaf and hard-of-hearing people, not hearing aids: they display captions rather than restore hearing. The original glasses connect to a smartphone by Bluetooth, and the companion app handles the captioning workflow. Hearview’s FAQ says captions appear on the right lens.
Several functions are easy to confuse. Transcription displays speech in the language spoken; translation converts it into another language. Hearview’s app materials also describe face-to-face text communication, text-to-speech replies, and captions for video audio on a mobile device. Those app features should not be taken as proof that every feature works with every glasses model, phone, language or media source. Hearview’s company page and its iOS app listing describe different capabilities.
What happened to the original Hearview glasses?
Hearview’s current product page marks the original glasses discontinued and says they will not be restocked. The same page says the company continues support and app updates for existing owners and recommends MYVU Air, developed by MYVU/Meizu and distributed by Hearview. The original model appears in Hearview’s comparison at $999 USD, but that is not a current offer to buy a new unit. An older review, reseller listing or social-media video may describe a product that is no longer sold by the manufacturer. Check Hearview’s status page for the current presentation.

Specifications and prices are manufacturer listings, not comparative independent tests. MYVU Air also advertises a touchpad, dual microphones with beamforming and noise-cancellation claims, Bluetooth connections to devices such as hearing aids and headphones, and an optional prescription frame and sunglasses clip. Hearview lists peak brightness of 2,000 nits. These claims do not establish how readable the display will be for a particular wearer or how long the battery will last in their chosen mode. See the MYVU Air specifications.
How the captioning workflow works
- Check compatibility first. Install the current Hearview app and confirm that the phone and operating system are supported. The U.S. App Store listing requires iOS/iPadOS 15.5 or later; Hearview also lists an Android app, whose current compatibility should be checked in Google Play.
- Pair the glasses in the companion app. Turn on Bluetooth and follow the current app’s pairing instructions. The available documentation establishes Bluetooth smartphone connectivity, but not a stable menu path for every app version.
- Grant only the required permissions. Microphone and Bluetooth access are central to the workflow; other permissions may depend on the feature. Review the prompts and the app’s privacy disclosures.
- Choose the relevant app function. Start speech transcription, translation, face-to-face communication or supported mobile-video captioning as needed.
- Position the phone so it can hear clearly. The phone’s microphone position and the room’s acoustics matter. Do not assume the glasses independently capture every sound around you.
- Start the session and check what appears. Confirm that text reaches the display, arrives quickly enough and is readable before relying on it for an important conversation.
- Save or export only if appropriate. Hearview’s FAQ says saved captions can be exported as Word, PDF or TXT files. Consider consent and storage rules before retaining a transcript.
Both glasses and phone need enough battery. Internet access may be necessary for features that depend on cloud processing; the available documentation does not establish offline operation for the original Hearview system. Check the exact model, app version and feature rather than assuming it will work offline.
Using caption glasses in education
They may help in one-to-one conversations with a teacher, tutor, counselor or classmate; small seminars where a phone can be placed near the main speaker; office hours; and video lessons played on a phone. If transcript saving is available and permitted, a student may also find it useful for reviewing material.
They should not automatically replace CART, interpreters, institutional captioning systems or other required accommodations. Before relying on the glasses in a class, test them in that room and with the relevant teaching format. Distance, masks, reverberation, technical vocabulary, rapid speech and overlapping discussion can all make recognition less dependable. Captions can also compete visually with reading, lab work or hands-on instruction.

- Ask the school or instructor about recording and transcription rules before saving class audio or transcripts.
- Agree on a backup access method for lectures, examinations, safety-critical training and situations where a missed word matters.
- Check whether the display position and text flow let you follow both the speaker and the lesson comfortably.
Using them at work
One-to-one meetings, interviews, training and customer conversations may be more manageable when the phone can be positioned near the speaker. Video or phone-mediated conversations may be possible through supported app workflows, but do not assume automatic compatibility with every conferencing service. Multilingual features may help in some conversations, subject to the app’s current language support.
Large meetings and stand-ups are harder when people speak over one another or sit far from the phone. Saving transcripts can also create confidentiality, consent and company-policy issues. If a meeting is sensitive, find out where audio is processed, whether transcripts persist and who can access the phone or account. Caption glasses are not a guarantee of a complete record or a substitute for professional real-time captioning when precision is essential.
Videos, social events and live entertainment
The Hearview iOS listing describes live subtitles for videos on a phone. That supports a phone-based use case, not universal direct connection to every television, streaming service, game console, cinema sound system or venue audio feed. If the phone is captioning sound through its microphone, it needs a clear path to that sound; headphones or a distant speaker can prevent that. Protected media or a particular app’s audio routing may also limit what works.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
At social events, presentations or performances, success depends on whether the phone or supported audio source can capture speech clearly and whether venue rules permit use. Ask about an audio feed or approved accessibility service where one is available. Do not count on the glasses to connect directly to a theater system or work with every Bluetooth hearing aid or headphone.
Accuracy, delay and multiple speakers
Hearview’s company page cites approximately 95% speech-to-text accuracy, while its product materials have also used other accuracy figures. These are company claims, not independently verified results for a specific wearer or room. A high word-level percentage would not mean error-free captions: a missed name, number, technical term or negation can change the meaning of a sentence. Hearview’s marketing and app materials also cite different language totals by feature, so check the current list for the exact model and function rather than treating one total as universal. The FAQ says the original system uses speaker segmentation in cross-talk situations, labels speakers as Speaker 1, Speaker 2 and so on, and recognizes up to 10 speakers. That is a product claim, not evidence that a ten-person discussion will remain reliably readable. Overlapping voices are difficult for transcription systems generally; speaker labels cannot recover words that the microphone did not capture clearly. Some Google Play users have reported delay, skipped words on the glasses and dissatisfaction with paragraph-style rendering. Those are anecdotal reviews, not controlled performance tests. Hearview FAQ; Google Play listing and user reviews.
Before depending on the system, test it in the environment where you plan to use it. Compare quiet and noisy rooms, close and distant speakers, single-speaker and overlapping conversation, and ordinary speech with names or specialized vocabulary. Notice the delay, missed words, speaker labels, text refresh, readability and visual fatigue. For an important event, arrange a reliable backup.

The original Hearview display is described in its FAQ as single-color green and limited to the right lens. That can be a deciding ergonomic issue: a monocular display, brightness, text movement and prescription fit do not suit everyone. Hearview says the original’s removable frame can be taken to an optician for prescription lenses; its FAQ also describes an optional magnetic sunglasses clip. The company’s legacy material claims up to 7 hours of continuous use, not a guaranteed duration for every session. Hearview hardware FAQ; Legacy product claims.
Hearview markets MYVU Air with a binocular display and a 43 g frame. That may appeal to someone who prefers two-eye presentation, but the manufacturer’s design claims should be assessed by trying the fit and display where possible. Its “up to 10 hours” typical-use battery claim is not an independently measured result. Test the chosen captioning and translation modes, charge both phone and glasses before long sessions, and keep a backup captioning method available.
Privacy, consent and stored transcripts
Microphone access means the app is handling conversations or media audio. Hearview’s FAQ says original-model captions are saved on the phone and can be exported; that does not by itself establish whether processing is on-device or in the cloud, how long other data is retained, or who can access it. The Apple App Store developer disclosure lists categories including user content, contact information, identifiers, usage data and purchases. Read the current app privacy disclosure and policy before use; do not treat a general privacy claim for MYVU Air as proof of the original system’s data handling. Phone or tablet captioning for occasional use
If you mainly need occasional conversation captions, want to test transcription before buying glasses, or are comfortable reading from a screen, try a captioning app first. Professional access for high-stakes situations
For legal, medical, academic, employment or safety-critical conversations—or when overlapping speech and dependable completeness are central—consider professional real-time captioning, CART, interpreters or an institution’s accessibility service. Smart glasses can supplement access but are not a universal replacement for those services.
Troubleshooting common problems
No captions or pairing failure
- Check that both glasses and phone are charged and Bluetooth is on.
- Open the current companion app and confirm microphone and Bluetooth permissions.
- Restart the app and glasses; if the glasses are paired to another phone, unpair and try again.
- Test in a quiet room and check for app or firmware updates.
- Contact Hearview support if the legacy device still will not connect.
Exact menu names vary by app version; the available documentation does not establish a stable, version-specific troubleshooting path.
Recommended Free Tools
Captions lag behind speech
Move the phone closer to the speaker or audio source, reduce background noise and check the network if the feature may use cloud processing. If delay remains too disruptive, use another captioning method for that setting.
Captions are inaccurate or speakers overlap
Test names, numbers, technical terms, accents, fast or quiet speech and noisy environments separately. Ask people to speak one at a time where possible and move the phone closer. Segmentation may help label speakers, but it cannot remove the difficulty of overlapping or poorly captured speech.
Video captions do not appear
Check whether the app supports that video source and whether the phone microphone can hear it clearly. Headphones may keep sound from reaching the microphone; some services may restrict audio routing. The available product information does not promise universal compatibility with protected media or external screens.
Text is hard to read or the battery runs low
Check fit, prescription, display position and text flow in the intended setting. Charge the glasses and phone before a long class or shift, test battery life using your actual modes, and have a fallback ready if the display becomes uncomfortable or power runs out.
