Can You Disable the Heart-Rate Sensor on a Pixel Watch?

Google does not document a Pixel Watch setting that fully disables its optical heart-rate sensor. Here’s what you can switch off—and what those controls do not change.

No documented Pixel Watch setting fully turns off the optical heart-rate sensor. You can hide the heart-rate tile and switch off certain alerts or safety features, but those controls do not establish that the watch has stopped taking readings. If you need to prevent the sensor from operating, the reliable option is not to wear a health-tracking smartwatch.

What “turning off the sensor” means

Several Pixel Watch controls can make heart-rate data less visible or limit how it is used. They are not interchangeable with a master switch that stops the watch’s optical hardware or all system-level sampling.

  • Hide the metric: remove the heart-rate tile or use a watch face without a heart-rate complication.
  • Stop alerts: turn off high- or low-heart-rate notifications where that control is available.
  • Disable a safety feature: turn off Loss of Pulse Detection, if available and if you accept losing that feature.
  • Limit app access or syncing: review Google Health, Fitbit, and Health Connect access and data settings.
  • Stop sensor operation: prevent the optical sensor from taking readings. Google’s public Pixel Watch documentation does not describe a user-facing setting for this.

What Google documents about switching it off

A Google Pixel Watch Community response dated October 2022 said there was no setting to disable the heart-rate sensor, while separately explaining that users could remove the heart-rate tile. That is a community response, not a permanent guarantee about every later model or software release. Google’s current heart-rate guidance describes tracking as enabled by default and explains how to view readings, but does not document a Pixel Watch-specific master sensor-off control. See Google’s community response and Google’s heart-rate guidance.

Google describes heart rate as part of Pixel Watch health and activity features, including exercise and sleep tracking. Removing a tile, signing out of an app, or avoiding Fitbit on your phone should not be treated as proof that the watch’s underlying health services have stopped sampling. Google’s overview is at Set up and track activity and sleep with Google Health on Google Pixel Watch.

What you can turn off instead

Hide the heart-rate tile or complication

If your aim is simply not to see the metric, remove the heart-rate tile in the companion app or choose a watch face without a heart-rate complication. Google’s community response distinguishes this interface change from disabling the sensor; do not expect the green LEDs to stop solely because the tile is gone. The available tile controls may vary by model and software version. Google Pixel Watch Community

Turn off Loss of Pulse Detection

Loss of Pulse Detection is a separate emergency feature, not a master heart-rate switch. Google documents this path in the Pixel Watch app on your phone:

  1. Open the Google Pixel Watch app.
  2. Tap Safety & emergency.
  3. Tap Loss of Pulse Detection.
  4. Turn off the slider beside Use Loss of Pulse Detection.

This disables that feature; it does not establish that ordinary heart-rate, exercise, or sleep measurements have stopped. Emergency and safety functions can also depend on country or region, connectivity, LTE carrier, Safety Signal, and device state. Disable heart-rate notifications

Google describes high- and low-heart-rate notifications as alerts for unusually high or low readings when you appear inactive. They are alerts about measurements, not a documented sensor control. Look for heart-rate notification settings in the health settings on your watch or in its companion app; menu names and availability can differ by generation and software version. Why the green LEDs may flash

Fitbit optical heart-rate sensors use green LEDs to illuminate the wrist and photodiodes to detect changes in blood volume in the capillaries. Infrared sensing helps the device determine whether it is being worn. Health, exercise, sleep, or safety functions may request readings, so the LEDs can flash even if you are not manually checking your heart rate. Google does not publish a user-adjustable Pixel Watch sampling schedule or a precise frequency that would justify saying the light is on continuously every second. Google Health Help Center

If you see green light while the watch is off your wrist, possible explanations include wear detection or a background health or workout process. Google’s public explanation does not provide a complete diagnostic guide for every instance of visible LED activity, so the light alone does not identify which function requested a reading.

Privacy controls: data access is not sensor control

It helps to separate what happens to the reading after it is taken from whether the watch takes it in the first place:

  • Visibility: remove the tile or complication so the metric is not displayed in that place.
  • Alerts: turn off the relevant notification or safety feature if you do not want it.
  • Syncing and account data: review Google Health or Fitbit account settings and data, and connected-app access.
  • App permissions: review Health Connect permissions where applicable.
  • Collection and hardware: the public documentation does not verify that these app- or account-level controls stop the watch’s system health services or optical sensor.

Not opening or syncing a health app may reduce what you see on your phone, but it should not be presented as a guaranteed way to stop on-watch collection. The same caution applies to unpairing, signing out, uninstalling the phone app, or using airplane mode.

Battery life: try other settings first

Google does not publish a Pixel Watch setting that disables heart-rate sensing or an official estimate of how much battery that change would save. Heart-rate sensing is only one possible power draw; display use, radios, GPS, notifications, background apps, workouts, and battery condition also affect runtime. For practical battery savings, review these settings before assuming the sensor is the main cause:

  • Always-on display and raise-to-wake or touch-to-wake.
  • Screen brightness and screen timeout.
  • GPS-heavy workouts and cellular connectivity when unnecessary.
  • Excessive notifications and background apps.

These adjustments can reduce other sources of power use, but none is a documented guarantee that heart-rate sensing has stopped.

If you need a wearable with no optical heart-rate sensing

If your requirement is that no wrist heart-rate sensor operate at all, a conventional analog or digital watch without health sensors is the straightforward choice. You could also wear the Pixel Watch only when you want its notifications or fitness functions and remove it afterward. Do not assume another health smartwatch has a full sensor-off mode unless its manufacturer explicitly documents one.
