Do not press a chronograph’s pushers while the watch is underwater unless the manufacturer confirms that your exact model has pushers designed and sealed for underwater operation. A water-resistance figure on the dial or caseback does not settle the question by itself. The clearest documented exception is a small group of Blancpain chronographs with sealed pushers, and even those should be checked against the instructions for the specific reference.
Why the default answer is no
Most brands that address this point in their instructions say the same thing: keep the crown and chronograph pushers untouched while the watch is wet or submerged. The table below summarises the positions taken by the manufacturers whose guidance was reviewed for this article.
| Brand | Documented position on operating controls underwater |
|---|---|
| Swatch | Technical information states that the crown and pushers must never be manipulated underwater. |
| Citizen | For its F158 diver watch, the precautions say not to push any buttons or pull out the crown in water, and caution against operating controls while wet. |
| Seiko | The 8L45D instructions say not to operate the crown or buttons underwater. |
| Oris | Pushers must be screwed down for the stated water resistance and must not be operated underwater. |
| Blancpain | Only specified sealed-pusher models are documented as usable underwater. See the exception section below. |
Where a brand allows underwater operation, it says so in the model documentation. Silence in a catalogue or general brochure is not permission.
What a water-resistance rating does and does not tell you
A water-resistance marking describes a pressure test. It is not a statement about whether every control on the case can be operated while the watch is in water. Swatch explains its own markings as indications tied to ISO 22810 pressure tests, with the hydrostatic equivalents shown below. The company also makes the rating conditional on an intact crown, pushers, glass, case and gaskets.

| Swatch marking | Hydrostatic equivalent stated by Swatch |
|---|---|
| 2 bar | 20 m |
| 3 bar | 30 m |
| 10 bar | 100 m |
| 20 bar | 200 m |
These equivalents describe static pressure in a test. They do not describe safe real-world diving conditions, and a 200 m figure does not mean the pushers can be pressed at that depth. Swatch’s explanation is its own; the publication date is not stated.
IWC takes a similar approach but separates sports immersion categories (6, 10 and 12 bar) from diving categories. Reading the category correctly is part of reading the rating correctly.

Screw-down pushers are a lock, not a feature
On many chronographs, the pushers screw down against the case. Oris describes this arrangement directly: the pushers must be screwed down for the watch to reach its specified depth rating, and they must not be operated underwater. Unscrewing a pusher in order to press it while submerged removes the precaution the design was built to provide.
Keep in mind three practical points:
- A screw-down crown or pusher on the product sheet tells you the mechanism exists. It does not tell you the pusher may be used in water.
- Pushers that do not screw down are not a green light. The brand guidance in the first table still applies to them.
- If the manual is unclear about whether a pusher may be actuated underwater, treat the answer as no until the manufacturer confirms otherwise.
The documented exception: sealed pushers on specific Blancpain models
Blancpain is the one brand reviewed here that documents underwater use of chronograph pushers. Its Lettre du Brassus publication (English edition 15, publication date not stated) says that the Fifty Fathoms Chronographe pushers “offer full 300 metre water resistance and can in fact be used under water.”

A later Blancpain publication narrows the claim. It says the sealed pushers on the Fifty Fathoms chronograph and the Bathyscaphe Chronographe Flyback are water-resistant to 30 bar and may be used underwater. Blancpain’s current product page lists a Fifty Fathoms Chronographe Flyback at 30 bar. The two publications do not describe identical wording, so the later, narrower statement is the safer one to rely on, and it still applies only to the models it names.
Do not extend this exception to other Blancpain references, other chronographs, or other brands. Confirm the exact reference and its current manual before relying on it.

A product listing can look similar without offering the same permission. The Tissot Seastar 1000 Chronograph (reference T1204171705103) is listed at 30 bar and 300 m, with a screw-down crown and push-buttons. The listing does not state that the pushers may be operated underwater, so it illustrates the distinction rather than answering the question.

A rating describes a watch when it left the factory in a specific condition. IWC states that the seals and sealing systems are subject to wear and natural aging, and that water resistance is not a permanent characteristic. Maintenance schedules differ by manufacturer, and none of the intervals below should be treated as a universal rule.
Best Value
- Bold Field Design: Green 41mm case with digital dial pairs with an adjustable black strap fitting wrists up to 8 inches for daily wear
- Serious Performance: A 100-hour chronograph tracks lap and split times, plus a 24-hour countdown timer and a month, day and date calendar for everyday training
- Everyday Alarms: Three daily, weekday, or weekend alarms with a 5-minute backup, 24-hour military time mode, and two time zones keep you on schedule
- Night-Ready Visibility: An acrylic lens and INDIGLO light-up dial keep the gray digital display easy to read from dawn to dusk and after dark
- Built to Last: A Timex watch is designed for durability and everyday reliability; every piece reflects our commitment to quality without compromise
| Brand | Interval given | Context and date |
|---|---|---|
| Casio | Gasket replacement once every two years | Maintenance guidance for the cited module; publication date not stated |
| Seiko | Overhaul approximately every two to three years | Diver manual; publication date not stated |
| IWC | Water-resistance testing at least annually | Testing by an authorized IWC Official Agent; publication date not stated |
What to do before you press a pusher near water
- Find the manual for your exact reference. Check whether the pushers screw down and whether the manufacturer permits operating them underwater.
- If the manual gives no explicit permission, leave the crown and pushers untouched while the watch is wet or submerged.
- Ask the manufacturer or an authorized watchmaker for a pressure test after a drop, after the case has been opened, after a service, if the seals are old, or if the service history is uncertain.
- After seawater exposure, follow the rinsing instructions in the manual. Casio says to rinse salt and dirt away with plain water. Citizen describes rinsing with fresh water and then checking the watch. Technique can differ by model.
- For timing a dive, use a dedicated diving instrument. Citizen says to use specialised diving instruments rather than the chronograph function on a non-diving watch.
Comparing a regular chronograph with a dive chronograph
When choosing between a standard chronograph and a purpose-built dive chronograph, compare these five points rather than the depth figure alone:
Quick Recap
- Whether the manufacturer explicitly permits operating the pushers underwater for that model.
- The exact reference’s water-resistance rating and the manual that comes with it.
- Whether the pushers lock down and must stay locked while the watch is submerged.
- The service history and the condition of the seals.
- The water activities you actually plan to do.
