Move away from the suspected source and take a level reading outdoors in a clear area. If the heading remains irregular, calibrate the watch using the procedure for its exact model. Manufacturers do not publish one universal safe distance.
Why nearby objects can affect a compass watch
An electronic compass senses the magnetic field around it. A nearby source of magnetism can alter that field, so the watch may not indicate the direction you expect. Casio lists permanent magnets, metal objects, high-voltage and aerial wires, and household appliances such as TVs, computers, and cellphones as potential sources of reading error. Suunto likewise advises keeping its device away from metal and magnetic fields.

The problem is not limited to small objects beside your wrist. A vehicle, building, or overhead power line can also make a location unsuitable for a dependable reading. Casio warns that accurate readings may be impossible indoors, especially in reinforced-concrete buildings, and in motor vehicles, boats, or aircraft.

How to get a more reliable reading
- Move away from possible interference. Step away from magnets, metal structures, appliances, vehicles, and other suspected sources before deciding that the watch is miscalibrated.
- Find a suitable spot. Take the reading outdoors, away from buildings, vehicles, and overhead power lines where possible. Garmin specifically recommends outdoor compass calibration away from those objects.
- Hold the watch level. Keep your wrist steady and level while taking the reading. Suunto includes keeping the device level among its instructions for correct readings.
- Calibrate only as the model instructs. If the heading still behaves irregularly after you have moved, consult the watch’s manual and follow its calibration sequence. The steps differ by model: Suunto describes slowly rotating the device, while Garmin’s quatix 6 manual describes moving the wrist in a small figure-eight during manual calibration. Do not assume one manufacturer’s method applies to another watch.
- Check the north reference separately. If you need true north or grid north for a map or task, set the appropriate north reference or declination in the watch. Calibration addresses sensor behavior; it does not set the map’s north reference.
Calibration and declination solve different problems
Calibration helps the watch’s compass sensor work as intended. Declination is the angular difference between magnetic north and true north; some watches let you enter a declination value or choose a north reference. Use the setting appropriate to your map or navigation task. Recalibrating repeatedly will not correct a north-reference setting that is wrong.
For example, if the watch’s heading remains inconsistent after you leave a metal structure, follow the model-specific calibration guidance. If the heading is consistent but does not align with a map using true north, check the declination or north-reference setting instead.

When to recalibrate
First move away from the suspected source, then reassess the reading. Suunto says a Suunto Core may need manual calibration after exposure to substantial metal, a magnet, or a strong electromagnetic field. A calibration prompt or persistent irregular heading is a reason to consult the instructions for that particular model.
For important navigation, check the watch’s manual and verify the direction with an appropriate separate reference in a suitable location. A handheld magnetic compass is a separate instrument, not an interference-proof one: its reading can also be affected by nearby magnetic sources.

What the manufacturer guidance establishes
The cited manuals and support pages provide operating precautions and calibration guidance, not controlled error measurements. They do not establish a universal number of degrees of error, a guaranteed safe distance from a source, or that every electronic device will affect every watch in the same way. Treat the heading as suspect near likely interference and take it again in a clearer location.
