Can You Use a Different Carrier’s eSIM on a Galaxy Watch5 or Watch5 Pro?

A different carrier may activate a Galaxy Watch5 LTE only if it supports the exact model and cross-carrier wearable service. Phone eSIM QR codes do not transfer to the watch.

Usually, no—not for the standard setup that shares your phone number. A Galaxy Watch5 or Watch5 Pro does not take a phone’s eSIM QR code; its LTE eSIM must be provisioned through a carrier that supports the watch’s exact model and wearable service. Samsung’s U.S. guidance generally expects the watch plan and phone to use the same carrier. A different carrier may work only if it explicitly supports activating that watch while the paired phone stays elsewhere, typically with separate watch service rather than shared-number service. Samsung’s activation guidance

First, check that your Watch5 or Watch5 Pro has LTE

Both watches were sold in Bluetooth/Wi-Fi and LTE versions. Only the LTE version has cellular hardware and an embedded eSIM; a Bluetooth/Wi-Fi model cannot be activated on a mobile plan. If Mobile plans is missing from Galaxy Wearable, first check the watch variant rather than assuming the carrier is at fault. Samsung explains the watch’s mobile-network controls.

Check the model number, country or region of sale, and whether the watch was sold by a carrier. For U.S. examples, AT&T’s device list names Watch5 models SM-R905U and SM-R915U, and Watch5 Pro model SM-R925U. That list is an example of model-specific approval, not proof that every listed watch can be activated on every carrier or plan. AT&T approved-device list

An “unlocked” label alone does not guarantee compatibility. Cellular bands, regional firmware, IMS/VoLTE support, provisioning, and a carrier’s wearable-device approval can all affect whether service works. Samsung says U.S. activation availability depends on select carriers and compatible plans. Samsung activation troubleshooting

For the watch’s identifiers, open Settings → About watch → Device, or look in the watch’s device information in Galaxy Wearable. The available identifiers can vary by model and activation state. A carrier may ask for the IMEI, EID, or ICCID to check eligibility. Samsung’s LTE activation instructions

What “a different carrier” can mean

Setup What to expect
Phone and watch use the same carrier; the watch shares the phone’s number Usually the intended arrangement, if the carrier supports the exact watch and the account and plan qualify. Carrier features include Verizon Number Share and T-Mobile DIGITS. Samsung’s number-sharing overview
Phone uses Carrier A; watch gets separate service from Carrier B Potentially possible, but only if Carrier B accepts the exact watch model and permits activation while the paired phone is on another carrier. Confirm whether the service provides a separate watch number and which calls, texts, and data work away from the phone.
Phone uses Carrier A; watch uses Carrier B, but the phone’s number is expected to follow it Generally unsupported by standard number-sharing arrangements, which are tied to the carrier’s service and account. Google’s Wear OS guidance describes single-number sharing as something a carrier may offer when it serves both devices. Google Wear OS cellular guidance

That distinction matters: a separately connected watch is not necessarily an extension of the phone number. Samsung’s standard activation guidance expects the watch plan to match the phone carrier; a cross-carrier exception depends on the target carrier’s specific provisioning and account rules.

Setup still requires a compatible phone

LTE does not make the Watch5 or Watch5 Pro an independently configurable phone. Samsung says Watch4 and Watch5 series watches require a compatible Android phone and Galaxy Wearable for initial setup; LTE can then let an activated watch connect away from the phone’s Bluetooth range. Samsung Galaxy Watch setup guidance

Compatibility requirements differ across Samsung’s support materials and device documentation. Samsung’s LTE activation page specifies Android 5.0 or later and at least 1.5 GB RAM; its Wear OS setup guidance for Watch5 describes Android 6.0 or later, at least 1.5 GB RAM, and Google Mobile Services. The Watch5 manual gives Android 8.0 or later. Check the requirements for your software, region, and carrier rather than treating one of these versions as universal. Activate through Galaxy Wearable

For a supported plan, use the wearable activation flow—not a phone eSIM transfer. Have the watch paired, the phone’s cellular service active during Samsung’s flow, and working Wi-Fi or mobile data. Update the phone, watch, and Galaxy Wearable before starting. Samsung’s menu labels may vary slightly by app version.

  1. Turn on the LTE Watch5 or Watch5 Pro and pair it with the compatible Android phone in Galaxy Wearable.
  2. Open Galaxy Wearable → Watch settings or the Home tab → Mobile plans.
  3. Choose the eligible carrier option shown, then follow its account verification and activation steps.
  4. Wait for the wearable plan to download and activate; check the watch’s mobile-network status before testing away from the phone.

Samsung documents this route as Galaxy Wearable → Watch settings/Home tab → Mobile plans. If you want a carrier different from the phone’s, do not assume that carrier will appear in the app: first get explicit confirmation from the target carrier that it supports your exact watch and cross-carrier activation. What to ask the target carrier

Contact the carrier before buying a plan, deleting a profile, or resetting the watch. Ask these questions plainly:

  • “Can you activate this exact Samsung Galaxy Watch5 or Watch5 Pro LTE model?”
  • “Can you activate it when its paired Android phone uses another carrier?”
  • “Would it receive a separate number, or can it share my phone’s number?”
  • “Can you check this watch’s IMEI or EID in your wearable-device system?”
  • “Do you activate through Galaxy Wearable, a carrier push, or a watch-specific QR code?”
  • “Which calls, SMS messages, and mobile-data features work when the phone is out of Bluetooth range?”

Ask the carrier to verify the watch’s exact model and identifiers, not merely that it supports Samsung watches in general. If the carrier requires both devices on one account or network for number sharing, a separate watch subscription may not meet that requirement.

Watch eSIM QR codes are not phone eSIM QR codes

A QR code for a smartphone eSIM is not automatically valid for a Galaxy Watch. The watch needs a wearable-specific provisioning profile, delivered through the carrier’s supported process. Samsung says AT&T or Verizon activation may require a carrier-issued QR code; in that support context, codes are unique to activation and can be used only once. If a profile is deleted, the watch is reset, or the watch is repaired or replaced, a new code may be required. Samsung QR-code and activation troubleshooting

Google Fi uses a different flow for supported Watch5-and-newer service: select the Fi account during pairing rather than scanning a QR code. Fi requires an active Fi plan and a paired Android phone on Fi; its watch service shares the phone’s number and is not a standalone plan. It therefore does not provide a general way to keep a non-Fi phone carrier while putting Fi on the watch. Fi also notes that texts may fail if the phone is off or out of coverage, even when the watch has cellular connectivity. Google Fi Watch5 activation and eligibility

Verify service away from the phone

  1. On the watch, open Settings → Connections → Mobile networks. Check that mobile service is enabled and that the expected operator or provider appears.
  2. Temporarily turn off Bluetooth on the phone or move the watch out of Bluetooth range. Keep the watch in an area with cellular coverage.
  3. Try a call and mobile-data task. Check SMS separately: texting behavior can depend on the carrier’s number-sharing setup, the messaging app, and whether the phone is powered on and connected.

Samsung’s mobile-network controls include mobile data, roaming, network operators, and access-point settings. Do not change advanced network settings unless the carrier instructs you to. Samsung mobile-network settings

Troubleshoot by symptom

“Mobile plans” is missing

  • Confirm the watch is an LTE model; Bluetooth/Wi-Fi models have no cellular plan option.
  • Complete phone pairing and update Galaxy Wearable, the phone, and watch.
  • Check whether the exact regional model is supported by the carrier. Samsung notes that the option may not appear on non-LTE watches. Samsung mobile-network guidance

The carrier says there is no eligible plan

  • Verify the model number and LTE variant, then ask the carrier to check the watch’s IMEI/EID directly.
  • Confirm the phone has active service and an internet connection during activation.
  • Ask whether the carrier supports this watch when paired to a phone on another network. If it does not, use the phone’s carrier or leave the watch on Wi-Fi/Bluetooth.

The QR code is rejected

  • Make sure it is a watch-specific code issued by the carrier, not a phone eSIM code.
  • Do not reuse a code already consumed. Ask the carrier for a replacement if the watch was reset, the profile was removed, or it was repaired or replaced.
  • For Google Fi, use the account-selection flow instead of scanning a QR code. Google Fi setup instructions

Activation completes, but LTE does not connect

  • Test away from the phone with Bluetooth off and confirm mobile data is enabled under Settings → Connections → Mobile networks.
  • Restart the watch and ask the carrier to confirm the wearable line remains active.
  • Do not delete the mobile plan as a first fix; profile removal can require carrier re-provisioning or a new one-time QR code.

Calls work but texts do not

  • Check whether the phone is powered on and connected, then verify the messaging app and number-sharing configuration.
  • Ask the carrier whether SMS is supported independently on the watch when the phone is away. Calls, texts, and data need not behave identically.

If cross-carrier activation is not supported

  • Want your existing phone number on the watch? Use the phone’s carrier, if it supports the watch and an eligible number-sharing plan.
  • Want a separate watch connection? Use another carrier only after it confirms support for your model, account arrangement, and required features.
  • Usually keep your phone nearby? Bluetooth and Wi-Fi can provide watch connectivity without a separate cellular plan; a Bluetooth/Wi-Fi model cannot be upgraded to LTE by adding an eSIM.
  • Considering a different watch or phone carrier? Check the exact model and activation rules before switching or purchasing. A shared underlying network does not by itself establish wearable-plan compatibility.
