How to Get AirPods Pro With Static or Crackling Replaced for Free

Some first-generation AirPods Pro with crackling or ANC problems may qualify for free earbud replacement, but Apple’s three-year limit puts many older pairs outside the program.

Some first-generation AirPods Pro may still qualify for free replacement of the affected earbud—but only if Apple confirms the defect and the unit meets the program’s age and production requirements. Apple’s sound-issues program covers certain AirPods Pro made before October 2020, with service limited to three years after the unit’s first retail sale. That means many pairs are now outside the program, even though Apple’s support page remains online.

Which AirPods Pro can qualify?

Apple’s AirPods Pro Service Program for Sound Issues applies to some first-generation AirPods Pro manufactured before October 2020. It does not cover other AirPods models, including AirPods Pro 2 or newer generations. Apple must inspect the earbuds and confirm both the fault and eligibility before providing free service.

Apple lists crackling or static that becomes worse in noisy environments, during exercise, or while talking on the phone. It also lists Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) problems, such as loss of bass or more background noise coming through than expected. These symptoms are a reason to request an assessment, not a guarantee of replacement.

Identify your model

  1. On a paired iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Bluetooth.
  2. Tap the ⓘ next to your AirPods Pro and check the model name and model number.
  3. Compare the model number with Apple’s AirPods identification guide. Apple also prints a model number beginning with “A” on the underside of each AirPod.

Menu labels can vary by operating-system version. If your device does not show these details, use Apple’s identification guide. A serial number or matching symptom alone is not a public eligibility check.

What the program replaces

If Apple confirms that one or both earbuds qualify, it replaces the affected left earbud, right earbud, or both at no charge. The charging case is not included in this sound-issues program; a case problem needs a separate service assessment.

Why many pairs are no longer covered by the program

Apple’s stated coverage period is three years after the affected unit’s first retail sale. The relevant date is not necessarily when the current owner bought a used pair. In 2026, most units first sold in 2019 or 2020 are beyond that window. A unit sold later as old stock could have a later deadline, but Apple has to establish the date and confirm eligibility.

The program page is still available, but that does not mean every first-generation pair—or every pair with crackling—remains eligible. Apple’s page describes a service program, not a permanent recall or automatic replacement policy.

Other ways service may be free

  • Apple limited warranty: Apple’s warranty generally covers manufacturing defects for one year from purchase. Accidental damage and normal battery wear are not covered by that warranty; the outcome depends on the purchase date, region, and inspection. See Apple’s AirPods service and repair information.
  • Active AppleCare plan: Check the terms of the plan already covering the AirPods. Apple lists accidental-damage coverage and no-charge battery service when capacity falls below 80%, subject to plan terms. Neither benefit automatically makes a crackling defect from ordinary use a free replacement.
  • Consumer-law rights: Apple says its warranty is in addition to rights under applicable consumer law. Rights vary by country or region, seller, and purchase circumstances, so ask Apple or the seller which rules apply rather than assuming a particular outcome.

Rule out a connection or cleaning problem

These checks can help distinguish a hardware fault from a problem with a device, app, or blocked speaker mesh. They do not extend the program’s three-year period or prove that an earbud qualifies.

Apple AirPods Pro 2nd Gen (USB-C) - Left Replacement AirPod (A3048) - White (Renewed)
  • Replacement Apple AirPods Pro (2nd Generation) (USB-C) AirPod - left side (A3048). Easy to pair with your existing AirPods set, with pairing instructions included.

  1. Test each earbud separately. Note whether the noise comes from the left, right, or both, and whether it happens in more than one app or audio source.
  2. Try another device. Pair the AirPods with another iPhone, iPad, or Mac if available. If the sound occurs only with one device, check that device’s software and Bluetooth connection.
  3. Compare listening modes. Turn ANC and Transparency mode off and on to see whether the symptom changes. Note when it happens, including during calls, exercise, or in noisy surroundings.
  4. Clean the AirPods using Apple’s guidance. Earwax, dust, or debris can obstruct sound. Do not soak the earbuds or push sharp objects into them. Apple’s AirPods support page links to cleaning and troubleshooting information.
  5. Update the paired device and allow firmware to update. Apple delivers AirPods firmware updates automatically; there is no normal manual download button. Update the iPhone, iPad, or Mac, turn on Bluetooth, connect that device to Wi-Fi, place the AirPods in their case, connect the case to power, close the lid, and keep it within Bluetooth range for at least 30 minutes. See Apple’s firmware update instructions.
  6. Re-pair or reset if the problem continues. Apple’s connection guide recommends checking that both earbuds charge, closing and reopening the case, and re-pairing or resetting when needed. Follow Apple’s AirPods connection troubleshooting for the steps that match your device.

Distortion limited to one app or audio file, blockage from debris, or damage after a drop or liquid exposure may point to a different cause. Apple’s inspection—not a home test—determines whether the sound-issues program applies.

Request an inspection from Apple

Use an official Apple service route and ask which coverage basis can be assessed: the sound-issues program, warranty, active AppleCare, or another applicable right.

Apple Support online or in the app

Start at Apple’s AirPods service page or contact Apple through the Apple Support app. You can describe the problem this way: “My first-generation AirPods Pro have crackling or static noise and/or ANC failure. Please check whether they qualify for the AirPods Pro Service Program for Sound Issues or another warranty service option.”

Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider

Arrange an inspection through Apple Support. If visiting an Apple Store, make a Genius Bar appointment. Apple’s program lists Apple Retail Stores, Apple Authorized Service Providers, and Apple Support as service routes. Bring the affected earbuds, their serial number, and proof of purchase if available. Bring the case if Apple requests it or if it is needed to reproduce the issue; the paired device may also help show the circumstances. Service options vary by location and parts availability.

Mail-in service

Apple can arrange mail-in service where available. Follow the instructions Apple provides for your case; do not ship items until service is arranged. Before mailing, Apple instructs customers to remove the AirPods from their Apple Account through Find My, remove and keep the ear tips, and send only the items requested. Do not include cables, adapters, or unrelated accessories. See Apple’s mail-in service instructions.

What to expect after Apple assesses the earbuds

Apple may confirm a qualifying fault in one earbud, confirm both, find no fault covered by the program, or determine that the unit is outside the program’s time limit. If the dedicated program does not apply, ask whether the earbuds qualify under warranty, an active AppleCare plan, or consumer-law rights before agreeing to paid service.

If Apple offers out-of-warranty service, request the estimate and what it covers before authorizing it. Apple says fees are estimates until inspection; taxes or shipping may apply, and an Apple Authorized Service Provider may set its own fees. There is no single price that can be promised for every location and case.

If you proceed with service, follow Apple’s instructions for pairing or configuring any replacement earbud with the existing earbud and case. For a disputed coverage decision, ask which rule was applied and whether Apple can explain the finding. If the AirPods came from a retailer, also check any seller warranty or return rights that may apply.
