The Cartier Drive de Cartier is a cushion-shaped watch with automotive-inspired details, offering a less familiar silhouette than the Tank. Its appeal depends as much on proportions and strap setup as on the dial: reviewers praised its design and daily-wear character, while one found the supplied folding clasp bulky and unreliable. Cartier’s reason for discontinuing the collection, its exact discontinuation date, and current new-watch availability are not established by the available sources.
What is the Drive de Cartier?
Cartier introduced the Drive at SIHH in 2016 as a new design alongside established shapes such as the Tank. The cushion-shaped case gives it a softer outline than a conventional round watch, while the dial guilloché and crown draw on automotive cues described in contemporary launch coverage. Hodinkee’s launch introduction and Time+Tide’s coverage present it as a distinct addition to Cartier’s design range.
The styling is a matter of taste, not a claim that the Drive is better than another Cartier. Compared with the familiar rectangular Tank, the Drive has a cushion case and sportier, automotive-inflected details. In a 2016 assessment, Hodinkee’s Benjamin Clymer called it, “It’s beautiful, it’s refined, it’s masculine, and its movement is made in-house!” That is Clymer’s opinion, not a technical specification.
How does the case wear?
Published dimensions vary by model and source. Time+Tide reports a 40 by 41 mm case, while Hodinkee describes its steel example as 41 mm and about 12 mm thick. These figures are reports about the examples reviewed, not a single specification that applies to every Drive.

Hodinkee’s Jack Forster said the steel watch looked slimmer than its thickness might suggest, crediting the proportions and domed crystal. That is one reviewer’s visual and wearing impression; wrist shape, fit, and the particular reference will affect how it feels to an individual wearer. Forster’s week-on-the-wrist review also describes the watch as a reliable daily companion and praises its details and proportions.
Movement and model differences
Hodinkee identifies caliber 1904MC-PS in its small-seconds Drive. A 2026 owner account for reference WSNM0009 names the movement as 1904-PS MC and reports a 48-hour power reserve. The reserve is owner-reported, not independently verified here as an official specification, and should not be generalized to other references.

The collection includes more than one configuration, including small-seconds and more complicated versions. Before comparing two examples, identify the exact reference and check its case material and dimensions, dial, movement and complication, thickness, strap and clasp arrangement, and condition or service history if it is pre-owned. The available coverage does not establish a complete reference-by-reference specification comparison or a current price ranking.
How is it to wear day to day?
Forster’s review is positive overall: he found the steel Drive dependable for daily wear and appreciated its proportions and finishing details. His principal practical criticism was the supplied folding clasp. He found it bulky and reported that it could lose its grip on the leather strap. That experience belongs to one reviewed watch and should not be assumed to describe every clasp or strap combination.

The case’s unusual shape may look more compact or more substantial than its measurements suggest, depending on the wearer. If possible, try the particular reference on wrist. If buying remotely, compare its dimensions with a watch you already wear comfortably, and confirm the strap and clasp setup rather than relying on the model name alone.

An owner review of reference WSNM0009 reports 20 mm lugs and describes trying alternate straps. The same owner says the original deployant clasp requires a thin strap and does not work with every strap. This is a reference-specific owner account, not proof that all Drive watches use the same lug width or clasp arrangement. The owner’s WSNM0009 discussion provides that fit report.

Before ordering a replacement 20 mm watch strap—or any other strap—confirm the exact reference, lug width, strap-end shape and thickness. Also check whether the existing clasp is intended to be reused; a strap that fits between the lugs may still be too thick or otherwise unsuitable for the deployant clasp. Ask the seller or a qualified watch specialist to verify compatibility for your specific watch.
Was the Drive discontinued, and can you still buy one new?
Cartier’s official reason for discontinuing the Drive, the exact date the collection ended, and its current new-watch availability are not established by the sources available here. An owner discussion asks, “Cartier Drive why discontinued?” but its explanations are competing guesses rather than a substantiated statement from Cartier. The discussion does not establish an official rationale.
