The Cartier Roadster is a shaped watch with a distinctly automotive look: a speedometer-inspired dial, conical crown, headlight-like date magnifier, and rivet-style details bring motoring cues to a recognizable Cartier silhouette. First launched in 2002, the collection was discontinued in 2012 according to WatchTime and returned in 2026 with updated medium and large models.
What makes the Cartier Roadster different?
Cartier’s US collection page describes the Roadster through details borrowed from automotive design: a speedometer-inspired dial, conical crown, date magnifier shaped like a headlight, and rivets and screws. The case is also described as streamlined and aerodynamic. Together, these elements give the watch a mechanical, purposeful appearance while keeping it a Cartier shaped watch rather than a dashboard instrument or motorsport tool. Cartier’s Roadster collection page calls the design a reflection of the mechanical world and technological advancement.
The automotive language is visible in the object itself; the available sources do not identify a particular car, designer, or design commission as its origin. Cartier’s Image, Style and Heritage director Pierre Rainero described the Roadster as “an interesting alternative to the Santos, with a character that is both sporty and elegant” in a 2026 Europa Star interview. That is Cartier’s characterization of its place in the collection, not a technical distinction.
When did the Roadster launch, and when did it return?
| Year | What happened |
|---|---|
| 2002 | Cartier identifies this as the Roadster’s original launch year on its current US collection page. |
| 2004 reporting year | Richemont’s 2004 annual report notes the Roadster Chrono and a smaller model among the year’s launches, evidence that the family expanded beyond one case configuration early on. |
| 2012 | WatchTime reports that the original range was discontinued in 2012. Cartier’s current page confirms a comeback but does not itself state the discontinuation year. |
| 2026 | Cartier describes the Roadster as making a comeback. Europa Star’s 2026 coverage describes new steel, steel-and-gold, and gold versions in medium and large sizes. |
Cartier’s chief executive Louis Ferla told Europa Star that the company listened to the market, clients, and vintage market and noticed renewed interest before bringing the model back. Cartier presents the return as a refinement to current standards, not simply a replay: the recognizable case shape and automotive details remain while the collection has been updated.

Choosing a size
The large case is wider and thicker, while the medium has more compact dimensions. Case measurements do not determine how a shaped watch will sit on every wrist: the curved case and bracelet affect its footprint, so trying on the specific size is the most useful comparison when available.
Materials and straps
Cartier’s US lineup includes steel, yellow-gold, and two-tone models. Hodinkee reports that the updated bracelet uses Cartier’s QuickSwitch system, but strap availability and what is included differ by model and market. Its examples include a blue-dial large model paired with a navy rubber strap and other configurations offered with alligator straps. Do not assume a strap is supplied with every reference or that a generic strap will fit; check compatibility for the watch’s specific reference. Cartier describes interchangeable metal bracelet and leather strap configurations on its large-model product page.

Is the Roadster a chronograph or a racing watch?
Not by virtue of its automotive styling. The speedometer reference, headlight-shaped magnifier, and mechanical accents are design cues. The 2004 Richemont report documents a Roadster Chrono as part of the early family, but that does not make every Roadster a chronograph or establish that the watch is a racing instrument. Check the features of the particular reference rather than inferring them from the name or appearance.

The return preserves the cues that made the Roadster visually distinctive while Cartier says it has refined details to meet current standards. The current range spans two case sizes and several material combinations, broadening the choice beyond a single configuration. It is therefore both a revival of a known design and a current collection, rather than evidence that the 2002 watch has been reissued unchanged.
