The Santos lineage
Cartier’s account of the wider Santos origin says Louis Cartier created a watch at the request of Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont so he could read the time while flying. That does not establish the present water resistance of another pre-owned watch: age, use and seal condition can vary. Do not assume a used example is suitable for swimming based on that listing figure. If water resistance matters, have the specific watch inspected and tested by a qualified watchmaker.

Cartier’s current large Santos is a different, newer model. Its official page lists a 39.8 mm case width, 9.38 mm thickness, caliber 1847 MC, 10 bar water resistance, and QuickSwitch and SmartLink systems. Those specifications and systems should not be attributed to W20098D6, and the available information does not establish that current Santos straps or links fit the Galbée XL. Confirm compatibility for the exact reference with Cartier or a qualified watchmaker before buying replacement parts. Cartier’s current large Santos page describes the newer model.
