The 2023 Cartier Tank Américaine Large is an automatic, curved rectangular watch measuring 44.4 × 24.4 mm and 8.6 mm thick. Cartier presented the refresh as a finer interpretation of the model’s original design; the Large is offered in steel and precious metals, but its elongated shape and the gap between the small and large sizes make trying it on especially useful.
What changed in the 2023 Tank Américaine?
Cartier said its design studio reinforced the watch’s original design and curved shape with a “finer, more acrobatic line.” The collection was available from September 2023, according to Cartier’s Watches & Wonders 2023 collection overview.
Launch-era coverage described the refreshed line as thinner, slimmer, and curvier than its predecessor. It came in mini, small, and large sizes. Hodinkee also noted a vertically brushed dial on the Large, while the smaller versions had sunray finishes (Hodinkee, April 7, 2023).
Large model specifications and references
The Large case measures 44.4 mm long, 24.4 mm wide, and 8.6 mm thick. Cartier’s regional listings give those dimensions for the steel and yellow-gold versions (steel; yellow gold). Fratello identifies the Large’s movement as Cartier caliber 1899 MC, an automatic movement running at 28,800 vibrations per hour with a 36-hour power reserve. It is a time-only watch (Fratello, December 4, 2024).

Fratello reports 3 ATM water resistance and an alligator strap with folding clasp for the Large generally. Cartier’s US product listing specifically states up to 3 bar for yellow-gold reference WGTA0300; the cited sources do not establish that every material variant has identical strap, clasp, or water-resistance details.
How does the Large wear, and is there a medium?
The 2023 line described by Hodinkee comprises mini, small, and large; a medium does not appear in that launch lineup. The cited small measures roughly 35 mm long, compared with 44.4 mm for the Large—a substantial jump in length that matters more on a curved rectangular watch than the labels alone suggest. Fratello wrote in its 2024 review that Cartier had not confirmed a medium at that point.

Wearing impressions vary. Hodinkee’s reviewer found the slimmer Large more wearable than the previous generation, while still appreciating its intentionally prominent, somewhat cuff-like presence. Fratello’s reviewer found it too long and too dominant on a 17 cm wrist, and observed that rectangular watches can take time to get used to. These are individual experiences, not a wrist-size rule: the curved case and the way it covers the wrist make an in-person try-on more informative than diameter comparisons with round watches.

Start with the case length and how much of your wrist it covers, then compare material and reference. The steel WSTA0083 gives the same elongated silhouette in a different material from the precious-metal versions; the yellow-gold WGTA0300 has the most fully specified regional listing among the models covered here. For rose gold and platinum, the cited source identifies references, but does not provide the same complete variant-by-variant detail.
