Cartier Tank Anglaise: Design, Wrist Feel and What to Check Pre-Owned

The Tank Anglaise pairs familiar Tank dial cues with a curvier case and enclosed crown. Here’s what the published hands-on review says and what to verify pre-owned.

The Tank Anglaise gives the familiar Cartier Tank a rounder, bolder profile, most notably by enclosing its crown within the case. In Cara Barrett’s 2015 hands-on review, the large pink-gold example felt comfortable on her wrist, though she found its date display too small to read. Cartier’s current Tank collection page does not name the Anglaise, but the brand’s user-guide catalog still documents Anglaise variants; those facts do not establish an exact discontinuation date or availability in every region.

How the Anglaise changes the Tank design

Cartier says Louis Cartier designed the Tank in 1916. In the brand’s description of the family, the twin parallel case elements, or brancards, incorporate the strap attachments into the case. That is context for the Tank line, not a launch date for the Anglaise. Cartier’s Tank collection page describes the line as reinterpreted over time.

In her August 25, 2015 review, Hodinkee’s Cara Barrett characterizes the Anglaise as a bolder, updated Tank. Its more curvilinear case contrasts with the classic Tank’s rectilinear Art Deco character, while familiar dial cues preserve the family resemblance. The most conspicuous change is the crown: Barrett describes a nine-sided outer ring set within the band and bezel, topped with a table-cut sapphire.

What the published hands-on review reports

Fit and dimensions

Barrett’s large pink-gold example measured 39.2 mm by 29.8 mm and 9.5 mm thick. She wrote that it “sits nicely on my wrist.” Both the dimensions and the fit impression belong to that reviewed example; they do not predict how another size or reference will wear on another wrist. Dial and date

The reviewed watch had a silvered guilloché dial, Roman numerals, a secret signature and blued-steel sword hands. Barrett found the enclosed crown system unusual and visually distinctive. Her main criticism was the date: she considered its display too small to read and disproportionate to the dial.

Movements and documented variants

Barrett’s 2015 review reports automatic and quartz options across the Anglaise line, identifying an ETA automatic in the large watch she reviewed and Cartier’s 1904MC automatic in the XL model. These are historical review notes, not an exhaustive specification for every reference or a statement of current configurations. Check the exact reference before identifying a movement.

Cartier’s user-guide catalog includes Anglaise entries for metal-bracelet and leather-strap models, including some diamond-set variants. A guide entry documents a configuration; it does not confirm current retail availability. Cartier user guides.

Is the Tank Anglaise discontinued?

Cartier’s current Tank collection page names other Tank lines but does not list the Anglaise, while the Cartier user-guide catalog still contains Anglaise model entries. Taken together, these are consistent with a watch buyers may encounter on the pre-owned market, but they do not establish a definitive discontinuation date, current stock status by region or whether an individual listing is genuine. Treat claims such as “discontinued since 2021” as unverified unless supported by reference-specific evidence.

What to compare before buying one

Because size and configuration vary, compare the actual reference rather than relying on a general Anglaise description. For a pre-owned example, evaluate:

  • Case shape and fit: Check the listed dimensions for that reference and, if possible, try it on; the published wrist impression concerns only Barrett’s large example.
  • Crown operation: Inspect the enclosed crown and ask the seller to demonstrate setting and winding, where applicable.
  • Dial and date: Decide whether the date’s legibility and placement work for you, especially given Barrett’s criticism of the reviewed example.
  • Movement and service: Confirm the movement against the reference and request service documentation rather than assuming all Anglaise watches share one caliber.
  • Configuration and materials: Verify metal, bracelet or strap, and any diamond setting against the specific watch and its paperwork.
  • Condition and completeness: Review condition, service history, box and papers, seller documentation and return terms. Arrange independent authentication before purchase when appropriate.

Prices and resale availability vary by reference, condition, service history, completeness and seller. The available evidence does not establish a representative current price or authenticate any particular watch. The Tank family also includes the Louis Cartier, Américaine, Française and Must; without reference-by-reference specifications here, compare each candidate by its exact dimensions, movement and configuration rather than assuming one is a direct fit or substitute.
