Cartier says a full charge provides about five months of autonomy and that the watch can run for at least 16 years without battery replacement. Those are manufacturer figures, not independently verified guarantees.
How the SolarBeat movement works
Cartier describes SolarBeat as a Swiss-made photovoltaic movement. Its 2024 user guide says it works with natural and artificial light: light passes through the perforated dial to a photovoltaic cell underneath, and the battery stores the resulting energy. Cartier notes that the recharge rate depends on light exposure, so the system relies on the watch receiving light over time rather than on a fixed charging schedule.
Cartier states that a fully charged battery has about five months of autonomy. The guide also says SolarBeat can operate for at least 16 years without battery replacement, comparing that figure with eight years for Cartier’s high-autonomy quartz movement and three years for its classic quartz movement. These are Cartier’s stated figures; they do not establish how long every individual watch will run under every pattern of light exposure or operating condition.
For the mechanism and its operating guidance, see Cartier’s 2024 Tank Must SolarBeat user guide.

Tank Must SolarBeat sizes and documented configurations
Cartier lists a small case and a larger case. The documented large references share dimensions, but differ in how they attach to the wrist.
| Reference | Case | Dimensions and thickness | Published configuration |
|---|---|---|---|
| WSTA0121 | Small | 29.5 × 22 mm; 6.6 mm thick | Steel bracelet |
| WSTA0122 | Large | 33.7 × 25.5 mm; 6.6 mm thick | Steel bracelet |
| WSTA0120 | Large | 33.7 × 25.5 mm; 6.6 mm thick | Black calfskin strap with steel ardillon buckle |
Cartier’s listings describe the small WSTA0121 with a silvered dial, blued-steel sword-shaped hands, folding buckle and a synthetic cabochon-shaped spinel in the beaded crown. The large bracelet WSTA0122 also has a silvered dial and blued-steel sword-shaped hands. The small reference’s specifications are on Cartier’s WSTA0121 listing; Cartier lists the large bracelet WSTA0122 and large calfskin WSTA0120 separately.

Choosing between the small and large case
The stated dimensions are the clearest basis for comparing fit: the small is 29.5 × 22 mm, while the large is 33.7 × 25.5 mm. Cartier’s published information does not include wearer-fit testing, so wrist presence and comfort cannot be inferred reliably from the measurements alone. If possible, try both sizes on your wrist rather than treating “small” and “large” as universal fit descriptions.
After choosing a case size, consider the attachment. The documented small configuration and one large configuration use steel bracelets; the other large configuration uses a black calfskin strap and steel ardillon buckle. The available evidence does not establish third-party strap compatibility.

Water resistance and everyday use
Cartier publishes a water-resistance rating of 3 bar—approximately 30 metres—for the listed small and large configurations. That is a specification, not a promise that the watch is suitable for swimming or diving. The product information cited here does not define a broader activity recommendation.
For the photovoltaic system, the practical consideration is whether your routine gives the watch regular exposure to light. Cartier says the movement accepts daylight and artificial light, and that charging depends on exposure; it does not provide a universal charging interval for every owner or lighting environment.

SolarBeat or conventional quartz?
SolarBeat is the light-recharged photovoltaic option in the Tank Must range described by Cartier’s guide. Cartier also gives autonomy figures for its high-autonomy and classic quartz movements, but those comparisons are manufacturer statements, not independent head-to-head tests. The meaningful choice is whether you prefer SolarBeat’s light-charging system and can expose the watch to light regularly, or would rather choose a conventional quartz category.
SolarBeat was introduced with the Tank Must release in 2021, as covered by Hodinkee’s August 2021 launch coverage. The 16-year battery-replacement statement remains Cartier’s claim. No independent reliability dataset or controlled runtime comparison is established by the sources cited here, so isolated reports are not enough to conclude that SolarBeat has a widespread defect—or that it is trouble-free.
