Robert-Jan Broer’s Fratello shortlist names five pre-owned and vintage watches he was watching in November 2024: a gold A. Lange & Söhne Lange 1, a Breguet Classique, an Ebel Sport Classic Chronograph, an Omega Constellation Grand Luxe, and a Grand Seiko 5722-9990. It is a personal list, not a ranking or a claim that these watches suit every buyer. Broer says his taste had shifted from steel sports watches toward precious-metal dress watches, and the appeal of older models partly reflects the rising prices he saw for some new watches. Read Broer’s original Fratello article, published November 22, 2024.

What to know about the five picks

The watches range from relatively formal gold dress pieces to a sporty chronograph, with very different buying concerns. The figures below are examples reported in the Fratello article, not current quotes or a like-for-like market survey. Availability, condition and service costs can change; confirm them with the seller or service provider.

Watch Character and key detail Article-era price or service example Broer’s main consideration
A. Lange & Söhne Lange 1 101.021 Early yellow-gold, hand-wound model; asymmetric display and large date About €25,000 pre-owned with box and papers; €1,900 for a complete service including case and sapphire work Documented service history
Breguet Classique 5157 Thin, 38 mm gold automatic with hours and minutes About €11,000 for a pre-owned full-set yellow-gold example; 2023 service price cited as €990, plus €360 for polishing Gold variant, completeness and service
Ebel Sport Classic Chronograph 8134901 Gold chronograph, especially sought by Broer with the wave bracelet Around €12,000 with gold wave bracelet; roughly €4,500–€6,000 on a gold leather strap Bracelet availability and caliber 134 service
Omega Constellation Grand Luxe 1950s flagship with solid-gold dial and bracelet €750 service price reported in the article; purchase prices vary widely Condition and box-and-paper completeness
Grand Seiko 5722-9990 1960s vintage watch with chronometer 5722(A) movement Under €1,000 to around €1,500 for a good example, as observed by Broer; forum service reports of €600–€800 Unpolished case and crisp dial printing

All prices in the table are historical examples reported by Robert-Jan Broer in November 2024; the Breguet service figures were identified as 2023 prices. They do not establish present-day values or tariffs.

A. Lange & Söhne Lange 1 101.021

Broer’s choice is an early yellow-gold Lange 1, reference 101.021, introduced in 1994. Its off-center time display, oversized date and small seconds between 4 and 5 o’clock give the dial its distinctive arrangement. The hand-wound L90.1 movement has a Glashütte-style three-quarter plate and hand-engraved balance cock. The article also notes a 2015 update that brought a thinner bezel and a new movement.

Broer contrasted gold Lange 1 retail prices above €45,000 with an approximately €25,000 pre-owned 101.021 example complete with box and papers. Those are article-era figures, not a current valuation. He reported €1,900 for a complete movement-and-case service that included sapphire replacement. His advice on undocumented service is deliberately strict: “If a watch is offered to you as serviced but with no papers to prove it, consider it not serviced.” Ask for dated service documentation and clarify exactly what work was performed.

Breguet Classique 5157

Broer had considered the yellow-gold 5157BA before buying a Breguet Tradition 7027BA. In Breguet references, “BA” denotes yellow gold. At the time of his article, he said he could not find a yellow-gold watch in the brand’s current collection, so buyers should distinguish the vintage or pre-owned reference they want from the current catalog.

The rose-gold 5157 he had worn measures 38 mm across and 5.5 mm thick. Its caliber 502.3 is 2.45 mm thick, uses a decentralized rotor and provides a 45-hour power reserve. The display is limited to hours and minutes.

Broer listed a €24,100 retail price for a new rose-gold 5157 and about €11,000 for a pre-owned full-set yellow-gold example. For service, he cited Breguet’s 2023 price of €990 for a self-winding watch without complications, with a further €360 polishing charge in 2023. Treat these as dated reported figures; obtain a current estimate for the exact reference and requested work.

Ebel Sport Classic Chronograph ref. 8134901

This is the sportiest watch on Broer’s list, and the gold version is particularly difficult to find with its wave bracelet. His own two-tone example uses caliber 134, based on the Zenith El Primero. He reported gold wave-bracelet examples around €12,000, while gold versions on leather straps were easier to find in good condition at roughly €4,500–€6,000.

The service distinction matters: the article gave €790 for servicing the more modern Ebel caliber 137, but Broer did not know Ebel’s price or process for caliber 134. He only suggested it might cost more, so €790 should not be treated as a caliber 134 quote. A qualified independent watchmaker experienced with Zenith movements may be another option; confirm capability and parts access before buying.

Omega Constellation Grand Luxe

Broer describes the Constellation as a family watch and says he owns a dozen Constellations. The Grand Luxe, a 1950s flagship he would like to own, stands apart through its solid-gold dial and bracelet. References 14355 and 14365 are examples with hooded lugs.

Examples can contain the bumper automatic caliber 354 or later conventional-rotor calibers 552 and 561; caliber 561 includes a calendar. The presentation box also changed over time, from a silver box to an alligator-leather Omega box. Broer notes that condition and whether box and papers are included cause prices to vary widely. The €750 Omega service price he reported came from a customer-service page he consulted; it does not establish a current fee or service availability for a particular watch.

Grand Seiko 5722-9990

Broer’s final selection is a 1960s Grand Seiko reference 5722-9990, which he first encountered on a reader trip in 2017. His priority is condition: a case that has not been overpolished and clear, crisp dial printing. He also points to the case-back medallion as a clue that can help reveal overpolishing.

  • Durable Construction: Crafted with 316L stainless steel case, mineral glass crystal, and 30m water resistance, built to withstand daily wear

The watch uses chronometer 5722(A), but Broer says it was not certified by the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute. According to his article, Seiko removed “Chronometer” from the dial in the late 1960s. He described the model as relatively easy to find on the vintage market and reported good examples at under €1,000 to around €1,500, depending on condition. That is his November 2024 market observation, not a current price guide. He did not know an official service price; the €600–€800 service range came from forum reports, not an official tariff.

How to use the list when shopping

Broer’s picks illustrate why a pre-owned watch’s asking price is only one part of the decision. Apply the checks that matter to the specific model rather than assuming that a box, a seller’s service claim or a familiar brand name settles the question.

  • Inspect condition and originality. For the Grand Seiko, look closely at case sharpness, the medallion and dial printing. For the Grand Luxe, compare the watch’s condition and completeness, including its historically varied box.
  • Verify service with records. Request paperwork that identifies the watch, date and work completed. For the Lange, Broer specifically advises treating a service claim without proof as unserviced.
  • Confirm service access before purchase. Ask the brand or a qualified independent watchmaker about the exact caliber, parts and expected work—especially for Ebel caliber 134.
  • Compare like with like. Gold bracelet and leather-strap versions, full sets and watch-only examples, and watches in different states of preservation are not direct price comparisons.
  • Recheck every volatile figure. The euro amounts here come from Broer’s November 2024 article, with Breguet service charges reported from 2023. They are historical examples, not current market statistics or guarantees of service availability.
