Good cabinet and furniture case finishing is the result of sound preparation, a finish suited to the wood and its use, consistent application and curing, and careful inspection. Look for even color and sheen, a smooth, clean surface, and no obvious blotches, scratches, dust nibs, raised grain, or tacky areas. These are practical signs to assess—not a certified grading standard—and a complex coating or glossy appearance alone does not prove quality.
What case finishing involves
Finishing refines, protects, or covers a wooden surface. It is the final coating stage in furniture production, but much of the result depends on work that happens before the coating goes on: inspecting parts, correcting defects, sanding evenly, and removing dust and contamination. The right system depends on the wood, the intended appearance, the protection required, cost, preparation time, and whether the furniture will be used indoors or outdoors. These considerations are outlined in FRIM Timber Technology Bulletin No. 86 (2018).
Published cabinetmaking processes illustrate the sequence without defining a universal recipe. Mouser Cabinetry describes wood and component selection, hand sanding, stain, catalyzed sealer, oven curing, sanding between applications, dust removal, topcoat, and final inspection. McMillan Cabinetmakers describes inspecting and preparing parts before stain or paint, sealer, sanding, clear coat, and—in some finishes—glaze. Its note that glaze needs careful execution to keep pieces consistent is a useful reminder: coat count alone does not establish workmanship.
How to tell if a cabinet finish is good quality
Preparation is even and thorough
Look for a surface that appears uniformly prepared rather than marked by conspicuous sanding scratches or neglected defects. Cracks and gouges should be addressed where appropriate; sanding should follow the grain, and dust, grease, wax, and other contamination should be removed before coating. Minwax’s wood-preparation guidance recommends a dry, clean surface, repair of cracks and gouges, sanding with the grain, and dust removal.

Color suits the wood and is consistent
Stain color depends in part on how the wood absorbs it, so an attractive sample on one species or board does not guarantee the same appearance across a whole project. Minwax recommends testing the chosen stain on a hidden area or scrap. Sherwin-Williams identifies uneven absorption as a cause of blotching and links inconsistent color to preparation problems or rushed application.
Surface and sheen are consistent
Inspect the finish in ordinary light and, where possible, with light falling across the surface. That can make scratches, dust trapped in the coating, rough patches, uneven sheen, or raised grain easier to notice. Mouser describes sanding after sealer to address raised grain and cleaning with vacuum, forced air, and tack cloth before topcoat. A smooth surface should still be judged against the chosen finish: a particular sheen or visible wood grain is an aesthetic choice, not a quality score by itself.

Coverage and protection match the purpose
Stain adds color; a clear finish provides a protective layer. Minwax lists water, household chemicals, food stains, and wear among the exposures a clear finish can help protect against. Select a finish for the furniture’s actual use and exposure, rather than appearance alone. Complete coverage is expected where the design calls for it, but a painted, opaque look and a clear coat that leaves wood visible are different intentional outcomes; McMillan notes that its paint hides the grain while its clear coat leaves it visible.
The finish is dry and cured as directed
A surface that remains tacky is a warning sign, but it does not by itself identify the cause. Sherwin-Williams lists insufficient drying and high humidity as possible contributors to a sticky stain finish. Drying and curing requirements vary by product and conditions, so follow the coating’s label and technical data rather than applying a generic schedule.

| What you notice | Possible explanation | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Blotchy stain or uneven color | Uneven absorption, preparation issues, or rushed application | Sherwin-Williams identifies these as possible causes; the appearance alone cannot establish the exact cause. |
| Tacky or sticky surface | Stain may not have dried thoroughly, or conditions such as humidity may be a factor | Check the product’s drying guidance and conditions. A remote visual assessment cannot diagnose the cause. |
| Dust nibs, roughness, or raised grain | Dust may have remained in the coating, or the surface may not have been adequately smoothed between stages | These are visible signs to inspect; cabinetmaking process descriptions identify sanding and dust removal as controls. |
| Uneven sheen or visible sanding scratches | Inconsistent preparation or application may be involved | Treat these as practical warning signs, not as a formal defect score. |
The sources describe process controls and common problems, but do not establish a validated scoring rubric for judging finish defects. Consider the intended look and use, and inspect the piece under more than one lighting condition before drawing a conclusion.

How to compare finish options
No coating is universally best. Compare a proposed finish against the wood, the desired look, the environment, and the maker’s ability to apply it consistently.
- Use and exposure: Consider moisture, household chemicals, food stains, wear, and indoor or outdoor placement.
- Appearance: Decide whether the grain should remain visible or be hidden by paint, and choose the intended color and sheen.
- Wood and substrate: Species and preparation can affect stain absorption, so judge samples on the actual wood where practical.
- Application method and capability: Wiped stain, sprayed finishes, and water-based coating systems call for different methods and suitable workshop controls. Manufacturer examples document particular approaches, not a single required process.
- Maintenance and repair: Ask how the finish can be maintained or repaired and whether it is compatible with an existing coating. There is no universal compatibility rule; consult the product’s technical information or a qualified finisher for the specific project.
The cabinetmakers’ documented use of catalyzed coatings, lacquer, or other systems does not make those products inherently superior to alternatives. FRIM’s bulletin emphasizes selecting a finish according to the wood, use, cost, protection, and desired appearance. Target Coatings lists water-based stains, sealers, lacquers, varnishes, and other coatings, including clear lacquer for furniture and case goods; that range is evidence of available categories, not a comparative durability test.

Questions worth asking the maker or finisher
- How are parts inspected, defects repaired, and surfaces prepared before coating?
- How is the stain color checked against the wood used in this project?
- What protection is the selected finish intended to provide for this furniture’s use?
- How are dust, raised grain, and consistency checked between coating stages?
- Which product instructions govern application, ventilation, compatibility, and curing?
Specific process details should be treated as examples, not benchmarks. For instance, Mouser reports oven curing at 120 degrees for two steps and 105 degrees for two steps in its own process, but the cited page does not state the temperature scale. Sherwin-Williams gives 80, 120, and 220 as example sanding grits for furniture; these are practical guidance, not a mandatory sequence for every wood and coating.
