Its main features are oversized hour and minute hands, a magnetically attached minute hand and a layered dial. It measures 49.1 × 58.2 × 19.6 mm, weighs 74 g and is rated to 20 bar. Casio’s own pages are the only source for these figures. This article covers what Casio states about the watch and flags where the real-world experience is something only wearing it can tell you. The model code is often typed “GAV01A-8A”, but the correct form is GA-V01A-8A.
What the watch is
Casio describes the GA-V01 series as an unusually large, layered design. Oversized central hour and minute hands sit above a full-screen LCD and a metallic dial with openwork cutouts. The bezel and band are integrated, and raised dimensional indexes double as bumpers. These are manufacturer descriptions of design intent. Casio’s pages do not report wear-testing results.

Size on the wrist
At 58.2 mm long and 19.6 mm thick, this is a big watch, and the 74 g weight is modest for its size because of the resin construction. The numbers can’t tell you how it sits. That depends on your wrist, and the length and thickness matter more than the weight. Casio’s 145–215 mm band range covers a wide span of wrists, but fitting the strap is not the same as the case looking balanced on a smaller wrist. Try it on, or compare the case length against your wrist width before buying.
The Shock Release Hand
The distinctive mechanism is the minute hand. Casio says it is attached magnetically rather than fixed directly to its shaft, so that it can absorb and dissipate impact. The trade-off is that the hand can shake under impact or vibration and may temporarily shift out of position. Casio says it returns to the correct position within a few minutes. That is the described design, not a fault. It does mean you should not judge the time by a minute hand that has just taken a knock.

Reading the dial
The layered dial puts big analog hands over a full-screen LCD, so the analog and digital information share the same space. Casio warns that the glass has a special spherical surface treatment, and its GA-V01 page puts it this way: “At certain viewing angles, the interior of the dial may be difficult to see due to special spherical surface processing applied to the glass.” If you value glanceable legibility from any angle, check the watch in person under the lighting you actually use. Casio’s pages provide no angle or low-light readability measurements.
Availability
Casio’s European page labels the GA-V01A-8A an “Old Model”. That is a regional status, not a worldwide discontinuation. Casio’s US and international pages identify the model, but they do not establish current US stock or price, so check your own region’s retailers. Confirm the full code, GA-V01A-8A, before buying. When you order a CR2025 battery or look for service, Casio’s support pages list operation guides and battery, band and repair categories. Casio does not confirm which third-party straps fit this watch, so check compatibility before buying one.
