Choose a regular G-SHOCK if impact resistance matters more than sensors. Neither line, taken as a whole, is a full smartwatch range—and a compass or workout GPS is not a substitute for detailed maps.
The right comparison depends on the specific model. Casio’s current US G-SHOCK collection includes connected MOVE watches, while its current US PRO TREK pages focus on conventional outdoor watches. The older PRO TREK Smart models are a separate, legacy category.
What “smart outdoor watch” means here
Outdoor watches fall into three useful categories. A traditional ABC watch provides altimeter, barometer, and compass readings, often alongside a thermometer, without running a full smartwatch operating system. A connected fitness watch records workouts and health or training data, then syncs selected information to a phone app. A full smartwatch offers a broader app and phone-integration platform, potentially including richer notifications, voice features, payments, or cellular functions.
In Casio’s current US range, the G-SHOCK MOVE GBD-H2000 is best understood as a rugged connected multisport watch, not an Apple Watch-style smartwatch. It combines GPS and optical heart-rate measurement with workout functions and smartphone linking. The PRG-340 is a conventional solar-powered ABC watch with physical controls and outdoor readings, not a modern smartwatch. Casio’s current US G-SHOCK connected-watch collection and PRG-340 product information show the distinction.

How G-SHOCK MOVE differs from a regular G-SHOCK
G-SHOCK MOVE is the part of the G-SHOCK range to consider if you want exercise tracking alongside a rugged sports-watch design. Casio’s US connected-watch collection includes the GBD-H2000, DW-H5600, GBA-950, and other connected models. Features vary by model; a G-SHOCK with Bluetooth or activity functions should not automatically be treated as a full smartwatch.
GBD-H2000: the multisport example
The GBD-H2000 combines GPS activity functions with optical heart-rate sensing, an accelerometer, gyroscope, compass, barometer, altimeter, and thermometer. It also has workout functions, smartphone linking, and a blood-oxygen measurement intended for general wellness rather than medical diagnosis. Casio lists 20-bar water resistance for this model. See the GBD-H2000 specifications for the exact feature and usage details.
It is a substantial watch: Casio lists dimensions of approximately 59.6 × 52.6 × 19.4 mm and a weight of 63 g. Check thickness, lug-to-lug fit, and band shape against your wrist and sleeves; case diameter alone does not tell you how a large watch will wear.
GPS and the charging trade-off
GPS activity recording and GPS timekeeping are not the same feature. The GBD-H2000 supports GPS workout functions, but its official specifications do not establish that it provides the detailed onboard maps found on some outdoor GPS watches. The product is also described as solar-powered while using a dedicated charging system: solar assistance does not make intensive GPS and heart-rate use cable-free.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCasio estimates approximately 14 hours of activity use in high-rate GPS mode, 16 hours in normal continuous mode, or 19 hours in long intermittent mode. The company separately lists approximately two months in regular watch mode with heart-rate measurement off, with longer power-saving operation. These are different usage modes, not a single all-purpose battery-life figure; actual results vary with settings and solar exposure. Consult the official GBD-H2000 specifications before comparing the battery to a solar ABC watch.

DW-H5600 and other connected models
The DW-H5600 offers a square G-SHOCK form with heart-rate and activity features. It may suit someone who prefers that shape to the larger GBD-H2000, but it is not a full smartwatch or a substitute for detailed route navigation. Check the DW-H5600 product page for the specific model’s functions and compatibility. The GBA-950 and other MOVE watches likewise need to be assessed model by model rather than assumed to share every GBD-H2000 feature.
What PRO TREK does better
PRO TREK is the more natural choice when you want a traditional field instrument: read the environment directly, operate the watch with buttons, and avoid making phone apps central to the experience. The PRG-340 represents that approach. Casio lists Triple Sensor functions—compass, barometric pressure and altitude, and temperature—along with Tough Solar, a duplex LCD, direct measurement buttons, sunrise and sunset display, 48-city world time, and 10-bar water resistance on its PRG-340 collection page.
Controls and display in the field
The PRG-340’s direct-function buttons provide quick access to measurements without making touchscreen operation the core interaction. Its duplex LCD gives the compass graphic a separate upper display layer. Large, nonslip controls can be useful with gloves or cold hands, though the best fit depends on the exact model and the wearer.
Casio also describes the PRG-340’s movable lugs as allowing the watch to lie flat for checking against a paper map. Most of the case, case back, and band use bio-based resin. These are model-specific design details, not features to assume across every PRO TREK.
PRW-6900: a higher-featured PRO TREK example
The PRW-6900 represents a more feature-rich solar and radio-controlled option. Casio lists Triple Sensor, Tough Solar, Multiband 6, and 100-meter water resistance for the cited PRW-6900BF-1 model. That makes it a different PRO TREK configuration from the PRG-340; check the PRW-6900BF-1 product page for its exact specifications.

ABC readings are useful, but not self-validating
A barometric altimeter estimates elevation from air pressure. Weather-related pressure changes can affect the reading, so calibrate at a known elevation when practical and treat unexpected changes with care. A wrist thermometer is also affected by the watch’s contact with your skin and surrounding conditions; it is not a reliable stand-in for measuring ambient air temperature without following the model’s instructions.
GPS, compass, maps, and navigation are different things
Terms such as “GPS” and “navigation” can describe very different capabilities. A compass provides a heading; an altimeter estimates elevation; GPS timekeeping uses satellite signals to correct the time. A GPS workout watch may record a route or pace without providing onboard maps or turn-by-turn guidance. A breadcrumb track, imported route, topographic map, and automatic rerouting are separate features that should be verified on the exact model.

The GBD-H2000’s GPS activity functions are useful for recorded workouts, while the PRG-340’s published feature set centers on environmental sensors and does not list standalone GPS mapping. For multi-band GPS and a broader outdoor-watch feature set, Garmin’s Instinct 3, 45-mm AMOLED model is a more direct alternative. For consequential backcountry travel, carry and know how to use a map and compass rather than relying on a watch as your only navigation system.
Battery, solar power, and phone dependence
Tough Solar is a central attraction of conventional PRO TREK watches for people who want to reduce routine cable charging. Performance still depends on light exposure and the functions used, and exact endurance is model-specific. This is not an equivalent workload to continuous GPS tracking, heart-rate sensing, and workout recording.
G-SHOCK MOVE’s connected fitness features bring a charging trade-off. On the GBD-H2000, Casio gives separate estimates for GPS activity, ordinary watch operation, and power-saving operation; those figures cannot be collapsed into one battery claim. Before buying any connected Casio, check which functions require its phone app, what the watch stores on its own, and how the exact Android or iPhone pairing works. Notifications and app integration do not establish parity with Apple Watch, Wear OS, or Garmin.

Legacy PRO TREK Smart watches: treat them as used devices
Older PRO TREK Smart models such as the WSD-F21HR and WSD-F30 used Wear OS and should not be mistaken for the current conventional PRO TREK range. Casio’s Android/iOS compatibility chart documents differences between phone platforms and functions, while its WSD-F21HR quick guide describes that model’s features. These are legacy documents, not evidence of current-generation software or support.

If considering one second-hand, check the battery’s condition, the exact phone and app compatibility, remaining software support, and availability of repairs or parts before price. A low purchase price does not resolve those uncertainties.
Durability, water resistance, and daily wear
G-SHOCK’s defining emphasis is shock resistance; many models also offer 200-meter water resistance, but this is not a specification to generalize to every model. PRO TREK emphasizes field measurement, readability, and controls. That does not make PRO TREK unsuitable for outdoor use: the distinction is that G-SHOCK generally has the clearer fit for repeated impact, industrial work, climbing abrasion, or rough water activity, while PRO TREK makes sensor access and field operation central.
Water-resistance figures are model-specific. The cited GBD-H2000 is rated 20 bar, the PRG-340 10 bar, and the cited PRW-6900BF-1 100 meters. Follow the individual manual for permitted water use; a rating does not establish suitability for every kind of diving, high-pressure water, or hot-water exposure.
For everyday comfort, consider thickness, weight, whether buttons press against the wrist, sleeve clearance, and whether you plan to sleep in the watch. The GBD-H2000’s listed 63 g weight and 19.4 mm thickness are especially relevant if you want a watch to wear around the clock. PRO TREK models vary, so compare dimensions for the actual reference rather than treating the PRG-340 as representative of the entire line.
Which watch fits your activity?
- Day hiker: Choose a PRO TREK such as the PRG-340 if direct compass, pressure, elevation, and temperature readings matter more than logged GPS workouts. If you want route recording, compare a GPS watch instead.
- Multi-day backpacker: A solar ABC watch can reduce charging demands, but use a map and compass for navigation and plan for weather-related altimeter error. If GPS recording is essential, account for battery use and carry a charging plan.
- Trail runner or multisport athlete: G-SHOCK MOVE is the relevant Casio branch for heart rate and GPS exercise records. Consider Garmin if training analysis, navigation, or a more developed connected ecosystem is a priority.
- Angler or camper: PRO TREK’s sensor access and environmental readings may be more useful than workout metrics; choose based on the exact model’s controls, display, and water rating.
- Industrial worker or frequent rough-water user: Start with the specific G-SHOCK model’s shock and water-resistance specifications. Do not assume every G-SHOCK has identical protection.
- Traveler or everyday wearer: A regular G-SHOCK suits simple rugged timekeeping; a PRO TREK adds outdoor sensors. A MOVE model makes sense if you will use its recorded exercise features and accept app setup and charging.
- iPhone owner: Check compatibility for the exact Casio model and app before purchase. For a full iPhone-centered smartwatch experience, Apple Watch Ultra 3 is a different, more integrated category.
- Buyer who hates charging: Favor a conventional Tough Solar PRO TREK or a regular G-SHOCK over a GPS/heart-rate watch used intensively.
- Buyer who needs maps: Compare GPS watches with explicit map and route-navigation features rather than choosing by brand name or compass presence.
Alternatives when neither Casio line is enough
Garmin Instinct 3 for a modern outdoor GPS watch
The cited Garmin Instinct 3 45-mm AMOLED model lists multi-band GPS, SatIQ technology, health and wellness monitoring, smart notifications, a flashlight, and incident-related safety features. Garmin lists up to 18 days of smartwatch-mode battery life for this specific model. Its US price was listed as $349.99 during the August 2026 observation window; price and availability can change. See Garmin’s product page for current specifications and pricing. This is a better fit when GPS, safety functions, and a broader fitness ecosystem outrank Casio styling or traditional operation.
Apple Watch Ultra 3 for an iPhone-first full smartwatch
Apple lists the Watch Ultra 3 as a 49-mm GPS + Cellular titanium model on the cited purchase page. Configuration, band, cellular availability, and price depend on the selection and region. It is the more appropriate category for a buyer seeking richer phone integration and cellular smartwatch capabilities, but it is a poor match for Android users or anyone prioritizing a traditional watch and minimal charging. Check Apple’s selected Ultra 3 purchase configuration.
