The Casio Pro Trek PRW-2500 is a large, solar-powered outdoor watch with a digital compass, barometer, relative altimeter, thermometer, radio timekeeping and tide and moon displays. Its specifications make it a capable feature set on paper, but the Japanese PRW-2500-1JF product page marks that variant discontinued. Whether it is worth buying now depends on the exact regional model, condition and support—not on its historical launch price.
What the PRW-2500 offers
Casio lists the PRW-2500-1JF as a PRO TREK outdoor watch with Tough Solar charging, Multi Band 6 radio timekeeping, a digital compass, pressure and altitude readings, a thermometer, a tide graph and moon data. The Japanese product page lists an August 2011 release month and identifies this 1JF variant as discontinued. That status does not establish that every regional variant is discontinued or unavailable; remaining stock and used examples may still appear.
The feature set is aimed at people who want environmental readings and basic outdoor timing functions on a wristwatch. It also makes the watch more involved than a simple timepiece: its size, display layout and controls are important considerations, and the specifications alone cannot establish whether an individual wearer will find it comfortable or easy to operate.
Size, construction and core specifications
For the Japanese PRW-2500-1JF, Casio specifies a 56.3 × 50.6 × 15 mm case and an 80.6 g mass. The case and bezel use resin and aluminum; the band is resin, and the glass is mineral. Casio lists 20-bar water resistance and a low-temperature specification of −10°C. These figures are for the named variant and are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. For context, the Japanese product page listed a suggested retail price of ¥44,000 including tax at publication in 2011. That is a historical launch price, not a guide to today’s asking prices or value.
Compass, altimeter, barometer and thermometer
Casio lists a compass range of 0–359°, relative altitude from −700 to 10,000 m, barometric pressure from 260 to 1,100 hPa, and temperature from −10 to 60°C for the PRW-2500-1JF. The product page also describes direction memory and calibration, altitude records, pressure trends and temperature measurement. Casio’s PRW-2500-1JF specifications

- OUTDOOR ABC TOOLS – Digital compass, altimeter, barometer and thermometer provide directional, elevation and pressure references for hiking and camping.
- ALTITUDE & WEATHER TRENDS – View elevation and air-pressure changes on the FSTN display. Calibrate the sensors before outdoor use for more reliable reference.
- PEDOMETER, NO APP NEEDED – Estimates steps, distance, calories and exercise time without Bluetooth, a smartphone or daily charging.
- LARGE 50MM OUTDOOR BUILD – Rugged metal case, mineral glass, green EL backlight and breathable 24mm nylon strap; 112g for a substantial wrist feel.
- 50M WATER RESISTANT – Suitable for rain, hand washing and everyday splashes. Do not press buttons underwater; avoid diving, hot water and steam.
These are useful reference functions, but a reading needs context. Pressure-based altitude depends on atmospheric pressure and can drift as weather changes; altitude calibration and appropriate use matter. A watch-mounted thermometer can be influenced by the wearer and surrounding conditions. Treat these readings as aids rather than replacements for dedicated navigation equipment, a calibrated weather station or a medical instrument.
What the Module 5602 accuracy figures mean
Casio’s Module 5602 guide states compass accuracy within ±10° in a guaranteed 10–40°C range, pressure accuracy within ±3 hPa and altimeter accuracy within ±75 m under the guide’s stated −10–40°C conditions, and temperature accuracy within ±2°C under −10–60°C conditions. These are manufacturer-stated tolerances, not results from an independent test. The guide also warns that strong impact or prolonged exposure to temperature extremes may reduce accuracy. - Bold, rugged GPS smartwatch is built to U.S. military standard 810 for thermal, shock and water resistance — with a large solar-charged display and durable 50 mm polymer case
- Solar charging: Power Glass lens extends battery life, producing 50% more energy than the standard Instinct 2 solar watch
- Infinite battery life in smartwatch mode when exposed to 3 hours of direct sunlight (50,000 lux) per day
- Built-in LED flashlight with variable intensities and strobe modes gives you greater visibility while you train at night and provides convenient illumination when you need it
- 24/7 health and wellness tracking helps you stay on top of your body metrics with wrist-based heart rate, advanced sleep monitoring, respiration tracking, Pulse Ox and more (this is not a medical device, and data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked. Pulse Ox not available in all countries.)
Do not assume those guide details apply to every PRW-2500. Check the module number printed on the watch or identified in its manual before relying on Module 5602 functions, operating steps or accuracy figures.
Does the tide graph show local tides?
The tide graph is a calculated display, not evidence of a live local tide feed. Casio describes its tide information as based on lunar-age periodicity and a lunar-tide interval, and uses the PRW-2500 as an example of its tide and moon displays. The product page lists tide graph and moon data, but the cited information does not establish local real-time prediction accuracy. Casio’s explanation of PRO TREK tide and moon displays

It can serve as a quick planning reference for a coastal outing. For boating, fishing or other decisions where tide timing matters, check authoritative tide information for the specific location.

Casio lists Multi Band 6 radio time reception for Japan, North America, Europe and China regions, alongside Tough Solar power. Radio reception depends on location and reception conditions; the listed regions do not mean the watch will receive a time signal everywhere. Confirm the exact regional suffix and specifications rather than assuming all PRW-2500 variants behave identically.

- case diameter: 52 millimeters
The Japanese 1JF specification also lists world time for 48 cities across 31 time zones plus UTC, a stopwatch, countdown timer and alarms. Casio’s Module 5602 guide describes additional functions including fishing-time information, sunrise and sunset, pressure trend display, compass calibration, altitude calibration and graphing. Treat guide-specific features as applicable only after checking that a particular watch uses that module.
Is the Casio Pro Trek PRW-2500 worth buying?
It may suit a buyer who specifically wants an older, large-format outdoor watch with solar charging, radio timekeeping and a broad set of sensor and coastal reference functions. The case dimensions and information-rich interface may be drawbacks for someone seeking a compact, simple watch. There is no hands-on evidence here to establish actual comfort, sensor behavior, reliability or battery performance.
Because Casio marks the Japanese 1JF variant discontinued, assess any listing as a legacy-watch purchase. Current prices, seller condition, warranty, inventory and parts availability are not established by the product specifications. Compare any candidate against alternatives using the dimensions, weight, power and time-correction method, sensor functions and stated tolerances, water resistance, and display and control preferences that matter to you; no specific competing model is assessed here.
Quick Recap
What to check before buying or maintaining one
- Exact reference and module: Match the suffix and module number on the watch to the listing and manual. Do not transfer Module 5602 instructions or tolerances to a watch without confirming the module.
- Condition and seller terms: Check the individual watch’s condition, return terms and any warranty directly with the seller. A discontinued designation does not establish the condition or availability of a particular example.
- Band fit and support: Casio’s support page provides a manual/support entry and includes band adjustment, replacement and repair topics. That does not establish that a particular band part is available or compatible; verify the exact reference and part number before ordering. Casio PRW-2500-1JF support
- Solar power: The product listing identifies the watch as Tough Solar. Do not infer that it uses a generic user-replaceable cell from a battery reference associated with a module specification.
