Three Catawiki lots featured by Fratello in 2017—a Longines Conquest Olympic Games 1972, a 1973 Grand Seiko 5646-7010 and a 2002 Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Night & Day—offer three distinct reasons to look closely. They are historical selections, not a current shortlist: the Longines reportedly sold for €8,500 before premium, and the original feature disclosed a Catawiki partnership while describing the selections and writing as independent. Treat each watch as an individual lot, verify its evidence and condition, and calculate the full cost before bidding. Fratello’s feature
What made these three lots stand out?
These watches are not direct substitutes. They span different eras and designs, and the available information does not establish current specifications, valuations or condition for the exact historical lots. Their appeal is best understood as a set of distinct collecting angles—not as a ranking or a guide to what each should cost today.
| Watch | What the 2017 feature establishes | What to verify on a live listing |
|---|---|---|
| Longines Conquest Olympic Games 1972 (Munich) edition | A small chronograph associated with the 1972 Munich Olympics. Fratello reported that this lot sold for €8,500 excluding premium in 2017. | Exact reference, originality, condition, included items, and the current auction’s fees. The reported result is historical, not a current valuation. |
| Grand Seiko 5646-7010 | A vintage example dated 1973. The feature specifically warns buyers to check originality, including for incorrect replacement hands. | Reference and year evidence, whether hands or other parts have been changed, movement and case condition, and available documentation. |
| Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Night & Day | The featured watch was from 2002, and its lot included the necessary paperwork. | What paperwork accompanies the particular listing, along with the watch’s reference, condition, and any disclosed service or modification history. |
The paperwork noted for the 2002 Reverso applies to that featured lot only. Likewise, a brand or model name alone does not identify the precise watch or establish what is included.
How to check a vintage watch before bidding
1. Match the identity to the physical watch
Start with the exact reference and year stated in the listing. Compare those details with the watch’s reference markings, caseback and other visible identifiers. Catawiki’s watch guidance asks sellers to provide fields such as brand, model, reference, year, movement, case and bracelet materials, bracelet length, and case diameter. A complete listing helps you assess the object, but listing detail is not an independent authentication guarantee. Catawiki’s watch-selling guidance

2. Examine originality and condition
Ask for clear, high-resolution photographs of the dial, hands, case, caseback, movement and reference markings. For the featured 1973 Grand Seiko 5646-7010, pay particular attention to whether the hands appear correct for the watch; Fratello singled out incorrect replacement hands as a mistake to watch for. A 10× loupe may help you see small visual details, but magnification cannot establish authenticity. For questions that photographs cannot settle, seek an assessment from a qualified watchmaker.
Look for disclosed flaws, restorations and modifications, and ask for service history where available. Catawiki asks sellers to disclose known flaws and restorations and recommends documentation such as watch-register records, authentication or certification documents, and manufacturer archive extracts where available. Documents can add evidence, but their presence should not be treated as proof that every component is original.

3. Confirm exactly what comes with the lot
Check the listing for box, papers, warranty information, service documents and other accessories, then ask the seller to clarify anything unclear. The Reverso selected in 2017 came with paperwork; that fact says nothing about the contents of another Reverso listing. For certain exclusive or unused watches, Catawiki’s guidance asks sellers for additional supporting proof, which may include a stamped warranty card, invoice or service documents, a full set and close-up images of serials, logos, reference engravings and hallmarks.
4. Calculate the full outlay
Do not compare a headline bid with a historical result without accounting for what each figure includes. Fratello reported the Longines sale at €8,500 excluding premium in 2017; it is not a current market benchmark. For any live auction, check the buyer’s premium and other applicable charges on the platform, then consider whether you may need a professional inspection or service. The available evidence establishes no representative market range or comparable service-cost figure for these watches.

What Catawiki’s watch rules do—and do not—tell buyers
Catawiki’s published guidance describes submission thresholds and categories, including vintage men’s watches from before 1980, premium watches from the 1980s onward, and exclusive watches from the 1980s onward. It lists thresholds of €200 or more for vintage, €200–€1,000 for premium and €1,000 or more for exclusive watches. The guidance says submitted watches should be complete and in excellent condition, and lists non-working or damaged watches, incomplete or modified watches, and watches without serial or reference numbers among items it rejects. Check the live guidance because marketplace policies can change.
These are marketplace submission rules, not proof that an individual listing has been independently authenticated. A listing’s acceptance or detail should not replace your own checks of the specific watch, its documentation and the seller’s answers.

Finding comparable lots today
The 2017 selections are not evidence that those lots remain available. Current category pages can help you browse, but availability is auction-dependent and a category page does not establish that a particular reference is listed. Catawiki currently has category pages for Longines, Jaeger-LeCoultre and watches; Grand Seiko listings may appear within the wider watch category.
For Longines context, the brand describes Flagship as an emblematic line dating to the late 1950s and lists Flagship Heritage automatics. That context concerns Flagship, not the featured Conquest Olympic Games watch, so it should not be used to infer the Conquest’s specifications or value. Longines Flagship collection
