The DOXA SUB 300 is considered an icon because it joined a distinctive orange dial and dual-scale dive bezel to a professional-diver design that DOXA introduced in 1967. The current SUB 300 Professional keeps that recognizable identity while adding a COSC-certified automatic movement and a 300 m water-resistance rating. Its appeal is the combination of history, legible design and modern specifications—not proof that it outperforms other dive watches.

How the SUB 300 became recognizable

DOXA dates the SUB 300’s debut to Baselworld in 1967. The company describes it as a professional-grade diver’s watch made available to the public, with an orange dial and patented unidirectional rotating bezel. That “first” characterization is DOXA’s own historical account, rather than an independently established comparison with every watch on the market at the time. DOXA’s history is the source for this origin story.

The orange dial was a design choice

According to DOXA, an early-1960s underwater-visibility project involving Urs Eschle and diver Claude Wesly led to the selection of bright orange. The account provides no measured visibility results, so the dial’s color is best understood as a defining design decision—not as a quantified guarantee of visibility in all underwater conditions.

The bezel made the design functional

DOXA says the original bezel combined a dive-time scale with a depth scale intended to help divers calculate no-decompression ascents. The current Professional listing specifies a unidirectional rotating bezel. These features explain the model’s diving-tool identity, but a watch does not replace dive training, a dive computer or applicable dive tables.

Cousteau and the wider SUB story

DOXA credits Jacques-Yves Cousteau with partnering on SUB 300 development. Its history says that in 1968 Cousteau’s US Divers company distributed DOXA watches in the Americas, including versions with an Aqua-Lung logo on the dial. DOXA separately dates the helium-escape-valve SUB 300T to 1968; that is a distinct model, not a feature to attribute to the SUB 300. The brand also connects an orange SUB 300T to Clive Cussler’s Dirk Pitt character from 1973, a cultural association with the broader SUB family rather than evidence that every SUB 300 reference is the same.

What to consider before choosing one

Fit and proportions

The 42.5 mm diameter is only one part of fit: the listing also gives a 45 mm lug-to-lug length and 13.4 mm thickness. Those measurements cannot establish how the watch will sit on every wrist, so try it on if possible.

Bracelet or rubber strap

The listed options are a beads-of-rice bracelet and an FKM rubber strap, both with a wetsuit extension on the clasp. The stated lug width is 20 mm, but that alone does not guarantee that an aftermarket strap will clear the case or work with the correct spring bars; check compatibility for the exact reference.

Movement expectations

The listed automatic movement is COSC-certified and has a stated 38-hour reserve. The product page does not establish a service interval, repair cost or independent timekeeping performance, so those should not be inferred from the certification or reserve figure.

Price and regional details

The USD 2,890 figure and two-year warranty are what the US listing showed when accessed on 2026-10-08. Treat them as a dated US-market snapshot, not a universal price or guarantee of local availability; confirm current local pricing, taxes, stock and warranty terms with DOXA or an authorized seller.

Why it earns the “icon” label

The case for the SUB 300’s icon status is specific: DOXA traces its professional-diver origins to 1967, its orange dial and dual-scale bezel give it an instantly identifiable design language, and the current Professional carries that lineage into a watch with contemporary listed specifications. The manufacturer’s history supports that account, while independent visibility studies, sales figures and comparative performance data are not established by the cited pages. The watch is therefore most compelling to someone who values a historically rooted design and usable dive-watch features, rather than someone seeking a proven performance advantage over alternatives.
