The listings illustrate why a brand name is only a starting point. How to judge a watch beyond its brand
Before bidding, evaluate the particular watch and the evidence attached to its lot. A famous name does not by itself establish value, originality or suitability for your collection.
- Reference and period: Confirm the exact model or reference and whether the stated production period fits the watch being offered.
- Condition and originality: Read the condition description carefully and inspect available photographs for wear, replaced or refinished parts, and inconsistencies. A polished case or altered dial can affect a vintage watch’s character and desirability.
- Movement and service: Distinguish a stated movement type from evidence that the movement has been inspected or serviced. Ask what service information is actually supplied.
- Documentation: Note whether box, papers, receipts or other provenance are included. Their presence should be assessed, not assumed from the brand.
- Price context: Keep the lot’s estimate, current bid and final price separate. An estimate or live bid is not a completed sale and does not establish a wider market value; include applicable buyer fees when setting a maximum bid.
What Catawiki’s review does—and does not—mean
Catawiki says watch submissions are reviewed by experts and sets requirements concerning eligible categories, authenticity, condition and expected value. Its guidance also emphasizes documentation and clear condition descriptions. This is Catawiki’s stated submission process, not a guarantee that every detail of a particular watch has been independently confirmed or that a buyer will receive a watch in a specific condition. Review the lot evidence and terms before deciding.

Accessories can support a collection, but fit matters
Catawiki’s accessory guidance covers items such as watch books, storage and high-quality straps, and gives Rolex documentation and original parts as examples. An accessory is not automatically correct for a particular watch: confirm its authenticity and, for straps, the dimensions and compatibility of the individual model before buying.
