The Fitbit Charge 5 has no physical reset button on the tracker. The small restart button is on the flat USB end of the charging cable—not the magnetic end attached to the tracker. Connect the Charge 5 to power, press that button three times with about one second between presses, then wait roughly 10 seconds for the Fitbit logo.
Where is the Charge 5 reset button?
Look at the end of the Fitbit Charge 5 charging cable that plugs into a USB port or wall adapter. A small, low-profile button is built into the cable’s flat USB end.
The other end is magnetic and attaches to the charging contacts on the back of the tracker. That magnetic end does not contain the reset control. The Charge 5 itself has no physical side button; normal navigation is performed on its touchscreen. This guidance applies specifically to the Fitbit Charge 5, not automatically to older Charge models or Fitbit smartwatches.
How to restart a frozen or unresponsive Charge 5
- Attach the tracker securely to its charging cable.
- Connect the cable to a computer USB port or suitable USB wall charger.
- Find the small button on the cable’s flat USB end.
- Press the button three separate times, pausing approximately one second between presses.
- Wait roughly 10 seconds for the Fitbit logo or another response.
This is a restart, sometimes called a soft reset. It is not a factory reset and is intended to reboot the tracker without erasing its stored data. Do not hold the button continuously, and do not press the tracker’s screen, metal rails, or sensor openings.

These steps follow Google’s official restart instructions.
Alternative restart method
If the cable button does not work, disconnect and reconnect the tracker three times within approximately eight seconds. After the third reconnection, wait about 10 seconds for the device to restart.

How to restart a working Charge 5 from the screen
If the touchscreen responds, use the less awkward software option:
- Start at the clock face.
- Swipe down from the top.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Restart Device.
- Tap Restart to confirm.
This reboots the tracker without intentionally erasing activity data. The menu labels are documented in Google’s Fitbit navigation guidance.

Restart versus factory reset
| Action | What it does | When to use it |

| Factory reset | Erases local user data and settings; setup is required again. | You are transferring the device or persistent software troubleshooting has failed. |
Do not factory-reset the Charge 5 merely because it will not sync. First restart it and troubleshoot the app and Bluetooth connection. A factory reset can permanently remove activity that has not synchronized to your account, along with alarms, goals, notifications, and other local settings.
How to factory-reset the Charge 5
Use the touchscreen menu when possible:
- Swipe down from the clock face.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Device Info.
- Tap Clear User Data.
- Follow the confirmation prompt shown on the tracker.
The Clear User Data option may only appear while the Charge 5 is connected to its charger. Some Fitbit documentation uses the term “factory reset” for this same erasure process, and the exact confirmation wording can vary. Follow the prompt displayed on your device rather than relying on a particular label.

Afterward, the tracker must be paired and set up again. If you are giving it away or selling it, remove it from your Fitbit/Google account as well. Remove any contactless-payment credential before transferring ownership. See Google’s device-erasure instructions and reset guidance.

Check the following before assuming the tracker is defective:
- You may be looking at the magnetic tracker end instead of the flat USB end.
- The button may be small and flush with the cable housing.
- The cable may be a replacement intended for another Fitbit model.
- The cable may be damaged, incompatible, or a poor-fitting third-party replacement.
- The tracker may not be seated correctly on the magnetic contacts.
Use a cable explicitly compatible with Charge 5. Google’s charging documentation describes the required magnetic alignment and identifies Charge 5, Charge 6, and Luxe as using the same general charging-cable family. Compatibility should still be confirmed for the specific replacement cable.
If pressing the button does nothing
- Clean the gold charging contacts on the tracker and the cable.
- Reconnect the magnetic charger, checking that its pins align correctly.
- Try another USB port or suitable power source.
- Leave the Charge 5 connected for several minutes.
- Repeat the three presses with an approximately one-second pause between them.
- Try the three-cycle disconnect-and-reconnect method.
- Check for vibration, charging activity, or any screen response.
A dead battery or poor charging connection cannot be fixed by a reset command. Google recommends cleaning the contacts as part of Fitbit charging troubleshooting. If the tracker remains completely blank and gives no vibration or charging response, contact Google/Fitbit support rather than opening the device or probing its sensor holes.
If the Charge 5 works but will not sync
Do not erase the tracker immediately. Restart it, open the Fitbit/Google Health app, and allow it time to sync. If syncing still fails, follow the app’s device-removal process, forget or unpair the Charge 5 in the phone’s Bluetooth settings, then return to the app and set it up again. Google documents these steps for certain update and synchronization problems.
Common mistakes
- Searching the tracker for a button: there is no physical reset button on the Charge 5 body.
- Pressing the magnetic end: the control is on the flat USB end.
- Pressing once: the documented restart sequence uses three presses.
- Holding the button: use three distinct presses, about one second apart.
- Confusing restart with erasure: the charger-button procedure reboots the device; it does not factory-reset it.
- Using Charge 3 or Charge 4 instructions: those models have different controls and procedures.
- Probing openings: holes on the tracker may be sensors, not reset ports.
