The first clue about Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 8 was not a leaked photograph or specification sheet. It was a set of firmware references that pointed to new watch model numbers: SM-L320 and SM-L330 for Bluetooth versions, plus SM-L325U and SM-L335U for U.S. LTE models.
Reported on March 29, 2025, the discovery strongly suggested that Samsung was preparing a new Galaxy Watch generation. It did not, at that stage, reveal the design, processor, battery, price, or launch date. Samsung later confirmed the speculation by announcing the Galaxy Watch 8 and Galaxy Watch 8 Classic on July 9, 2025.
What was the first Galaxy Watch 8 clue?
The clue was the appearance of Galaxy Watch 8-related firmware and model identifiers:
- SM-L320 and SM-L330 for Bluetooth models
- SM-L325U and SM-L335U for U.S. LTE models
The firmware strings reported at the time included L320XXU0AYC4, L320OXM0AYC4, L325USQU0AYC6, and L325UOYM0AYC. The discovery was reported by SamMobile.

These were development references, not an official Samsung announcement. They indicated that Samsung was working on devices in a new model-number family, but they did not independently confirm the retail name or any particular feature.
Why the numbers pointed to Galaxy Watch 8
Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 7 models used nearby identifiers, including SM-L310 and SM-L315. The move to the L320, L330, L325U, and L335U identifiers therefore fit the expected progression for a successor generation.
That made the evidence persuasive, but model-number sequencing is not absolute proof of branding. The careful conclusion in March 2025 was that the firmware strongly indicated new Galaxy Watch models—not that it had revealed the complete Galaxy Watch 8 product.
What the firmware did not reveal
The discovery did not establish the watch’s:
- Screen sizes or materials
- Battery capacities
- Processor or storage
- Sensors and health features
- Dimensions or design
- Price
- Launch date
- Regional LTE availability
- Whether a Classic model would return
This distinction matters. Firmware identifiers can expose a product family, but they are not a complete specification leak. Many details remained speculation until Samsung’s official announcement.

Samsung eventually confirmed the Galaxy Watch 8
Samsung announced the Galaxy Watch 8 and Galaxy Watch 8 Classic on July 9, 2025. The watches became generally available in the United States and selected markets on July 25, 2025. Samsung also introduced a new Galaxy Watch Ultra alongside them, but the Ultra was a separate product and was not the device identified by the original firmware clue.
Galaxy Watch 8 specifications
The standard Galaxy Watch 8 comes in 40 mm and 44 mm sizes, with Graphite and Silver color options. Both sizes use Samsung’s five-core, 3 nm Exynos W1000 processor and include 2 GB of memory and 32 GB of storage.
| Specification | 40 mm | 44 mm |
|---|---|---|
| Display | 1.3-inch, 438 × 438 | 1.5-inch, 480 × 480 |
| Weight | 30 g | 34 g |
| Battery | 325 mAh | 435 mAh |
| Rated battery life | Up to 40 hours with Always-On Display off | |
Samsung lists Bluetooth 5.3, dual-frequency GPS, 5ATM water resistance, IP68 protection, and MIL-STD-810H durability. The software is Wear OS 6 powered by Samsung, with Samsung’s One UI 8 Watch interface.
The watch uses a slimmer cushion-shaped design influenced by the Galaxy Watch Ultra. Samsung describes it as the thinnest Galaxy Watch generation and lists an 8.6 mm body thickness. Its updated Dynamic Lug System is intended to improve flexibility, comfort, and sensor contact; the comfort claim is Samsung’s design assertion rather than an independent test result.

Health, fitness, and AI features
The Watch 8 includes Samsung’s BioActive Sensor and supports a broad set of sleep, fitness, and wellness tools. Promoted features include:
- Sleep tracking and sleep-related guidance
- Energy Score
- Running Coach
- Personalized heart-rate zones
- Vascular Load
- Body-composition measurements
- Blood-pressure and ECG functions where supported
- Sleep-apnea-related features where available
- Galaxy AI wellness insights and Gemini integration
Samsung also introduced an Antioxidant Index, which it says can measure carotenoid levels in five seconds. This should be treated as a consumer wellness indicator, not a diagnosis, laboratory result, or replacement for medical or dietary advice.
Health features are not universal. ECG, blood pressure, sleep-apnea functions, and related tools can depend on the country, regulatory approval, paired phone, Samsung Health Monitor availability, software version, and user setup.
Galaxy Watch 8 versus Watch 8 Classic
The Galaxy Watch 8 Classic is the choice for buyers who want traditional watch styling and a physical control. It has a larger 46 mm case, a rotating bezel, and a dedicated Quick Button. It is available in Black and White.

| Model | U.S. Bluetooth launch price | U.S. LTE launch price |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy Watch 8 | $349.99 | $399.99 |
| Galaxy Watch 8 Classic | $499.99 | $549.99 |
The Classic costs more and its larger case may be less suitable for smaller wrists. Choose it for the rotating bezel and conventional appearance, not because the original firmware clue established that it would exist—the Classic was only confirmed later by Samsung.
Bluetooth or LTE?
Bluetooth/Wi-Fi is the better-value option when your phone is usually nearby. It costs less and is sufficient for notifications, workouts, sleep tracking, and most everyday smartwatch tasks.
LTE is more useful if you want to call, message, or stream without carrying your phone. It costs $50 more at the Watch 8 level, and activation may require a compatible carrier plan or additional connected-device line. LTE bands, features, emergency functions, and carrier support vary by country and network.

Samsung’s “up to 40 hours” figure applies with the Always-On Display turned off. Samsung lists up to 30 hours with the display enabled for the 44 mm LTE model on its Canadian product page. GPS workouts, LTE use, screen brightness, health monitoring, notifications, and software settings can all reduce runtime. The Watch 8 is therefore better viewed as a roughly daily-charging smartwatch than a multi-day endurance watch.

The watch supports Android phones running Android 12 or later with more than 1.5 GB of memory, but Android compatibility does not guarantee full feature parity. Some functions are limited to Samsung Galaxy phones or depend on region, paired-device model, and supported services. It is not compatible with iPhone in the same way as an Apple Watch is designed for iOS.
Was the original clue accurate?
Yes—but only within its proper limits. The March 2025 firmware discovery was a legitimate and unusually useful indication that Samsung was preparing a new Galaxy Watch generation. The model-number progression ultimately led to the Galaxy Watch 8, whose announcement followed in July.
What the clue did not do was reveal the finished product. The final watch brought a cushion design, Exynos W1000 hardware, Wear OS 6, new wellness tools, and a Classic variant that could not be confirmed from those firmware strings alone.
For buyers, the regular Watch 8 is the sensible fit for Android users seeking a relatively thin mainstream smartwatch. The Classic makes more sense if a rotating bezel and larger traditional case matter more than price or compactness. Select Bluetooth unless you specifically need phone-free connectivity, and verify regional health support and carrier compatibility before choosing LTE.
Samsung’s U.S. launch prices and launch trade-in offers are historical reference points, not guaranteed current prices. Promotions, stock, and trade-in values can change.
