The Classic XL adds Poinçon de Genève certification, while the Race Edition has the higher stated water resistance.
Why Chopard made two 90th-anniversary watches
Both models were launched in 2017 to mark 90 years since the Mille Miglia began. The Fédération de l’industrie horlogère suisse described the 2017 race as the event’s 35th edition, held May 18–21, with approximately 440 crews from 36 nations covering more than 1,600 km and passing through over 30 cities and market towns (Fédération de l’industrie horlogère suisse, 2017).
Chopard has been the race’s World Sponsor and Official Timekeeper since 1988, according to its 2025 catalog (Chopard). The shared racing connection does not make the watches interchangeable: their case materials, movement construction, production numbers, and water-resistance ratings differ.

Specifications for the Race Edition are documented by La Cote des Montres (2017 model details); the Classic XL specifications and certification are listed by the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie (FHH) (FHH reference entry). These differences describe construction and stated specifications, not a ranking of quality or suitability.

Mille Miglia 2017 Race Edition, ref. 168571-3002
Steel case and racing-inspired dial
The Race Edition has a 44 mm stainless-steel case measuring 13.79 mm thick. Its silver-toned dial combines an engine-turned surface with snailed chronograph counters and a tachymetric scale. The solid caseback is stamped with the Mille Miglia logo and “Mille Miglia 1927-2017.” Chopard paired it with a rubber strap whose tread pattern draws on 1960s Dunlop racing tyres (La Cote des Montres).
Automatic chronograph and practical distinction
Its self-winding chronograph movement has 25 jewels, runs at 4 Hz, is COSC-certified, and offers approximately 48 hours of power reserve. The stated water resistance is 100 m, compared with 50 m for the gold Classic XL. The Race Edition was produced in a 1,000-piece limited edition (La Cote des Montres).

Gold case and smaller edition
The Classic XL uses a 46 mm pink-gold case that is 13.12 mm thick, with a white dial and 50 m stated water resistance. Its 90-piece edition is far smaller than the Race Edition’s 1,000 pieces; that difference indicates relative production scale, not current availability or market value (FHH reference entry).
Hand-wound L.U.C flyback caliber
Inside is the L.U.C 03.07-L, a hand-wound flyback chronograph developed and produced in-house. FHH lists 300 components, 38 jewels, a 4 Hz frequency, and a 60-hour power reserve. It carries both COSC and Poinçon de Genève certifications; FHH describes it as the first Mille Miglia model to carry both (FHH reference entry). The flyback function lets a chronograph be reset and restarted in one operation, a feature suited to timing successive intervals without the usual separate stop, reset, and restart sequence.

Which differences matter most?
- For a steel automatic: the 44 mm Race Edition is the relevant reference, with self-winding operation and 100 m stated water resistance.
- For gold and a hand-wound flyback movement: the Classic XL is the distinct option, with the in-house L.U.C 03.07-L caliber and dual certification.
- For production scale: 90 Classic XL examples were made versus 1,000 Race Editions. Neither figure establishes how many are currently offered for sale.
- For size: the Classic XL is 2 mm wider, while the Race Edition is 0.67 mm thicker according to the published dimensions.
Availability and value
The cited specifications do not establish current stock, sale history, or resale value for either reference. FHH’s entry includes an indicated CHF 39,000 figure, but that is not evidence of a current asking price or transaction value. For a listing, check that the reference number matches the watch being offered and assess the specific example’s condition, documentation, and seller independently.
