The pendulum made clocks keep time more regularly than earlier mechanisms, but the first design was not yet a precision instrument by modern standards. Huygens supplied the scientific design and analysis; Hague clockmaker Salomon Coster manufactured early examples and received exclusive rights to make them in parts of the Netherlands.
Who invented the pendulum clock?
Huygens is credited with developing the first practical pendulum clock. The idea built on an earlier principle associated with Galileo, but turning a pendulum into a working clock regulator was Huygens’s achievement. The Metropolitan Museum of Art describes the distinction in its record for an early pendulum clock; the National Institute of Standards and Technology likewise dates Huygens’s first clock to 1656 in its account, A Walk Through Time: A Revolution in Timekeeping.
The dates refer to different milestones, not competing versions of a single event:
- Near the end of 1656: Huygens developed the working design.
- 1657: Coster received exclusive Dutch manufacturing rights. The Met’s record dates the patent to June 16, 1657, and specifies rights in certain provinces.
- 1658: Huygens published an initial account, Horologium.
- 1673: He published the fuller mathematical treatment, Horologium Oscillatorium.
The chronology is supported by the Met and Science Museum Group’s historical and collection records. The Science Museum Group describes an early Coster pendulum clock dated circa 1657.

How did Huygens’s pendulum clock work?
The clock was weight-driven, and its pendulum regulated the rate at which the mechanism ran. A clock needs a regulator: a component that sets a repeatable pace while the escapement releases the driving force in measured increments. Earlier clocks commonly used a verge-and-foliot arrangement. Replacing the foliot’s less regular motion with a pendulum gave the mechanism a more consistent rhythm.
Huygens’s first design used a crown-wheel escapement. The pendulum’s swing controlled the escapement, which in turn allowed the clock’s weight to drive the gear train forward. The advance was substantial, but the pendulum did not swing freely in isolation: the escapement affected its motion.

Why the early design had limits
The crown-wheel arrangement required a relatively wide pendulum swing. A pendulum’s period—the time it takes to complete an oscillation—changes with the amplitude of its swing, so a large swing limited the clock’s regularity. The Seiko Museum’s account of the pendulum clock’s development describes how later recoil-anchor and anchor escapements reduced the swing and supported improved performance: Mechanical Timepieces. A pendulum is therefore not perfectly isochronous in every clock: the escapement and swing amplitude matter.
How accurate was the first pendulum clock?
It was a major improvement, but surviving institutional summaries report different figures. NIST says the early pendulum clock’s error was less than one minute per day. The American Physical Society gives a different historical comparison—15 seconds per day for the pendulum clock versus 15 minutes per day for other timekeeping of the period—in its 2017 account. Those statements are not presented with matching measurement conditions, so they should not be combined into one definitive accuracy figure.

- This classic pendulum clock is 18 inches tall. The diameter is 9 inches and the width of the clock is 11 inches. The pendulum is made of a soft metal and has smooth motion. The clock and clock frame are very easy to clean and the pendulum can be removed.
The supported conclusion is that the pendulum substantially improved clock regularity over earlier timekeeping, while the crown-wheel design’s wide swing still constrained performance. Later escapement changes improved on that first arrangement.

Coster was the Hague clockmaker who made early Huygens-designed clocks and received exclusive rights to manufacture them in specified Dutch provinces in 1657. The distinction matters: Huygens developed the regulator and its mathematical basis, while Coster brought the design into clockmaking practice. The Met’s collection record documents an early Coster clock and the 1657 patent; the Science Museum Group also holds an early Coster example dated circa 1657.

How did the design spread beyond the Netherlands?
The pendulum clock reached London quickly. In 1658, clockmaker Ahasuerus Fromanteel advertised clocks that kept more equal time than clocks made without the new regulator. The Met’s record reproduces the advertisement, dated October 21–28, 1658: “there is lately a way found out for making of Clocks that go exact and keep equaller time than any now made without this Regulater.” A surviving Fromanteel clock dated about 1660–65 provides material evidence of early English manufacture; it is recorded by the Science Museum Group as a Fromanteel pendulum clock.
These records show how the invention moved from a scientific design to working products: Huygens developed the principle, Coster manufactured early clocks under Dutch rights, and Fromanteel advertised and made pendulum clocks in England.
