The Christiaan van der Klaauw Planetarium is a mechanical wristwatch complication: a miniature model at six o’clock places the Sun at the centre and shows Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn orbiting it. The maker describes the display as moving in real time and calls it the “world’s smallest mechanical planetarium.” That superlative is the manufacturer’s claim, not an independently verified size comparison.
What the Planetarium watch displays
At the six o’clock position, the Sun sits in the middle of a heliocentric display, with six planets arranged around it in order: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. This is an animated mechanical display on the wrist, not a dome or a projection planetarium. The manufacturer says the planets move in real time.
For the CKPT3304, Christiaan van der Klaauw publishes the following planetary periods on its product page. These are the maker’s stated specifications; they have not been independently assessed here.
| Planet | Displayed orbital period |
|---|---|
| Mercury | 87.97 days |
| Venus | 224.70 days |
| Earth | 365.24 days |
| Mars | 686.98 days |
| Jupiter | 11.86 years |
| Saturn | 29.46 years |
Those figures describe the periods represented by the CKPT3304 display, not a claim that the watch is an astronomical measuring instrument.

What “world’s smallest” means
Christiaan van der Klaauw markets the Planetarium as the world’s smallest mechanical planetarium, and the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie repeats that description in its profile. The available sources do not provide an independent, measured comparison with other mechanical planetarium complications. Treat “world’s smallest” as a manufacturer’s superlative rather than a verified ranking.
CKPT3304 specifications
The manufacturer’s CKPT3304 page describes one specific Planetarium reference. Its details should not be assumed to apply to every watch bearing the Planetarium name.

How the watch fits into the brand’s history
The Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie says Christiaan van der Klaauw was the first to put a planetarium on the wrist in 1999. This is the foundation’s historical account; the sources here do not independently establish priority.
Rank #3
The same foundation profile lists a CVDK7386 self-winding movement with 35 jewels and a 96-hour power reserve. Those figures differ from the CKPT3304’s 32 jewels and maximum 60-hour reserve, so they should not be combined into a single specification. The references and their source contexts are distinct.
The manufacturer says van der Klaauw began independently in 1974 and that its watches are designed and made in Naarden, Netherlands. It describes production as limited and the watches as numbered. See the manufacturer’s homepage for its account of the atelier.

Manuals and ownership considerations
Identify the generation before using a manual
The manufacturer separates its Planetarium instructions into manuals for watches “Since 2013” and “Until 2012.” Establish the watch’s reference or production generation before following operating instructions; the maker’s manual index provides the two categories. The current manual describes the Sun at the centre of the six-o’clock display, with the six planets around it.
Winders and service
The CKPT3304 is automatic. The manufacturer says the Astronomical Masterpieces collection box is fitted with a removable Swiss Kubik winder, but that does not establish that a winder is included with every Planetarium reference or that any generic winder is compatible. Confirm the requirements for the particular watch with the manufacturer or an authorized dealer before choosing an accessory.

The available product information does not establish a gear-train description, measured accuracy, current price, live stock or authorized-retailer status. It also does not identify owner-repair procedures or specific replacement parts. For a specialist movement, use the manufacturer or an appropriately qualified watch service provider rather than assuming a general repair tool or procedure is suitable.
Where to check a specific watch
The manufacturer publishes a product page for the CKPT3304 and separate manuals by generation. For a purchase or comparison, verify the exact reference and its own movement, case, dial, strap, calendar, display and included-box details; the available sources do not establish a complete current lineup or current retail availability.
