What is the Christopher Ward C1 Bel Canto?
The C1 Bel Canto is an automatic mechanical watch whose defining feature is a sonnerie au passage: a chime that sounds as the hour passes. Unlike an alarm set for a chosen time, the Bel Canto’s chime is tied to the movement of the watch and marks each passing hour when enabled. Christopher Ward’s owner document explains the watch’s mechanism and controls.
How does the Bel Canto chime work?
Christopher Ward says technical director Frank Stelzer adapted the brand’s jumping-hour movement to create the FS01 chime mechanism. In the manufacturer’s account, the FS01 is a module built on a Sellita SW200-1 base movement, with more than 60 additional components in the striking mechanism. A hammer strikes a steel spring positioned around the dial; the spring is tuned to produce a D note. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independent measurements of the sound or movement.
The sound is part of the dial’s architecture rather than a separate speaker. The company says the case material and internal layout were selected to help amplify the chime. The manufacturer’s product story describes the module and development, while the owner document describes the spring around the dial.

What does it feel like to wear a watch that chimes?
The chime changes the watch from a purely visual timekeeper into one that can announce the hour audibly. In daily use, that means the feature may add delight and character, but it is not necessarily welcome in every setting. The control lets the wearer choose whether the watch sounds; it does not change the fact that the complication is the Bel Canto’s central point of difference.
Christopher Ward documents a pusher at 4 o’clock for switching the chime on or off and says a red indicator shows the selected state. Its owner document also describes winding the minute hand around the dial to hear the chime. That is the maker’s operating description, rather than a report of hands-on use.

How much development went into the sound?
The development figures published by the brand and by Time+Tide are similar, but should be kept distinct rather than treated as one independently verified test record. Christopher Ward says it tried “over 80 different springs and hammers,” varying materials, lengths, and shapes to achieve its intended chime. Time+Tide describes “around 80 different sound springs and hammers over two years.” Both accounts indicate substantial tuning work; neither provides a standardized test protocol or independent acoustic measurements.
Christopher Ward also says the FS01 striking module contains more than 60 new components. These are manufacturer-reported development and construction figures, not performance benchmarks. The exact-title Time+Tide Watches feature offers the wearer-focused framing behind “What We Wore.”

What are the case and dial like?
The manufacturer’s documentation for the version described identifies a 41 mm Light-catcher case, Grade 5 titanium, and a layered time-telling dial. The product story says titanium and the internal architecture were chosen in part to help carry the chime. These details should not automatically be applied to every later C1 Bel Canto edition: confirm the specific variant’s case material, dimensions, dial, movement, and other specifications before comparing or buying.
For context, Christopher Ward later introduced the C1 Bel Canto Lumière, which WatchTime covers as a distinct configuration. Its review includes a historical, configuration-specific price; it is not evidence of the original Bel Canto’s current price.

The C1 Bel Canto’s strongest proposition is specific: it makes the passage of an hour audible through a mechanical chime that can be switched off. The FS01, spring, and layered dial turn that complication into the defining experience of the watch. If you are considering one, the key is to decide whether an hourly sound is a feature you will enjoy, then confirm the precise edition and current terms before purchase.
