The Christopher Ward C8 Power Reserve Chronometer pairs a hand-wound SH21 movement with a useful 120-hour reserve and a dial-mounted indicator that shows how much winding remains. Its strongest practical caveat is fit: the steel case measures 44 mm across and 53.2 mm lug to lug, so it is a large aviation-style watch even though it is only 11 mm thick. The specifications below come from the manufacturer’s handbook; wear impressions are identified separately.
What the C8 Power Reserve offers
This is a large, aviation-inspired watch built around a hand-wound movement and a visible power-reserve display. The Christopher Ward owner’s handbook calls the calibre SH21 “hand-wound automatic,” an internally confusing description; its winding instructions describe a hand-wound watch, as does the independent hands-on review.
The SH21 uses twin barrels and has a stated reserve of 120 hours, or five days, when fully wound. The handbook puts it this way: “Thanks to its twin barrels, when fully wound, it’ll deliver an incredible five days of power.” That is the manufacturer’s specification, not a separately reported endurance test.
Specifications and design
| Specification | Christopher Ward owner’s handbook |
|---|---|
| Movement | SH21, hand-wound; twin barrels |
| Stated power reserve | 120 hours (five days), with dial indicator |
| Chronometer | Described by Christopher Ward as standard; handbook timing tolerance −4/+6 seconds per day |
| Case | 316L steel with black DLC finish |
| Diameter | 44 mm |
| Height | 11 mm |
| Lug to lug | 53.2 mm |
| Weight | 81 g |

| Dial and case details | Arabic numerals, luminous hands and indices, cut-out date wheel, small seconds, push-down crown, exhibition caseback with decorated twin barrels |
The handbook’s chronometer tolerance is a manufacturer specification; it should not be read as an independent accuracy measurement of an individual watch.

Will the 44 mm case fit your wrist?
Diameter alone does not tell the whole fit story. At 44 mm wide and 53.2 mm lug to lug, the C8 has a substantial footprint, while its 11 mm height keeps it comparatively low-profile for a watch of this style. If your wrist is small, or you prefer compact watches, the long lug-to-lug measurement is the figure to check most carefully. Trying it on is more reliable than judging from diameter alone.
A forum owner discussing the stainless-steel reference C08-44HPR1-S00K1-TK also described it as large but relatively modest in height. That owner liked the dial balance and reserve complication, while finding the date difficult to read. Those are individual impressions, not a representative fit or legibility assessment.

How the winding and date setting work
- Wind the crown clockwise until the reserve indicator reaches full, following the handbook’s instructions.
- Stop when you meet resistance. The handbook warns against forcing the crown farther, as doing so can damage the movement.
- Do not correct the date between 20:00 and 02:00, when the date-change gearing may be aligning.
- Push the crown fully flush after setting. The handbook says this is necessary to maintain the stated water resistance.
Because it is hand-wound, the watch requires winding rather than relying on wrist movement to replenish its reserve. The indicator makes the remaining winding status visible; the stated five-day reserve means winding need not be a daily task if the watch is fully wound and then left running normally.
What 5 ATM water resistance means
The handbook specifies 5 ATM (50 m), but this is not a dive rating and should not be treated as blanket permission for swimming or water sports. Christopher Ward notes that real-world resistance is affected by variables including arm movement, impacts, water-sport conditions and temperature changes. Its guidance is qualified and even contains mixed shower-related advice: a table indicates suitability for most household shower units, while other cautions address showering and rapid temperature changes. The conservative choice is to avoid routine water exposure rather than rely on the rating as an assurance.

What the hands-on review and owner report add
Joshua Clare-Flagg’s 12&60 review covered less than a week. The reviewer praised the design, movement and overall build, but said the supplied tan leather strap felt stiff and squeaky throughout that short test. This is a brief individual observation, not evidence that every strap behaves that way or that the leather will remain uncomfortable over long-term wear.
The handbook documents a 22 mm strap, which gives a clear width to check when considering a replacement. It does not establish compatibility with every aftermarket strap or clasp. The forum owner’s mention of wearing the watch on a NATO strap is anecdotal rather than proof of fit for any particular strap.

Price and availability
The 12&60 review listed a price of £1,550 in its own review period. That figure is historical context, not a current price. Current manufacturer availability, marketplace stock and pricing have not been established, so check the exact model and reference, seller, and condition before making a purchase decision. The owner-post reference C08-44HPR1-S00K1-TK identifies a stainless-steel variant; do not assume every C8 listing is the same configuration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who should consider the C8?
- A strong match: someone who wants a hand-wound watch with a long stated reserve, a visible reserve indicator, and an aviation-style dial.
- Check fit first: anyone uncertain about a 44 mm case or a 53.2 mm lug-to-lug span.
- Consider the trade-offs: the supplied leather strap drew one short-term complaint, and the date may not be especially easy to read for every wearer.
- Look elsewhere if: you need a watch intended for diving or want water resistance that can be treated as assurance for regular aquatic use.
