Current manufacturer guidance ranges from roughly two to three years for some mechanical-watch overhauls to about 10 years for certain models, with separate schedules for seals and water resistance.
The figures below are manufacturer recommendations, not an industry average or a guarantee that a watch can go without attention until its stated interval. They reflect guidance available through 2026; they should not be read as a record of what every brand recommended in 2021.
What does a watch service interval cover?
Before comparing intervals, compare the work. A mechanical full service or overhaul generally involves dismantling and cleaning the movement, lubricating and reassembling it, then testing its operation. A battery change is a separate task for a quartz watch. Gaskets help protect against water ingress, while a water-resistance test checks whether the watch still meets its specified protection level.
These jobs are not interchangeable. A recommendation to replace gaskets every two years does not mean a complete movement overhaul is due every two years. Likewise, a movement-service schedule does not by itself tell you when to test water resistance.

Manufacturer-recommended service intervals
The table compares the specific task each manufacturer discusses. Regional guidance and exact requirements can differ, so check the current instructions for your watch’s reference and market.
| Manufacturer and source | Task described | Stated interval | Model, use or climate qualification | Service route |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rolex — current FAQ accessed 2026 | Professional watch service | Approximately every 10 years | Depends on model and real-life usage; this is approximate guidance, not a no-attention period. | Official Rolex Jeweler or Rolex Service Center. |
| Oris — Helpcenter article updated 27 July 2023 | Full service | Every three to five years for most Oris watches; every 10 years for Calibre 400 Series movements | The interval differs by movement family. | Follow Oris’s official service guidance for your model. |
| Seiko Watch Corporation — current FAQ accessed 2026 | Examination, cleaning and oiling where needed | About every three years | Frequency depends on climate and the owner’s care. | Authorized Seiko Service Center. |
| Citizen Watch Global — current maintenance page accessed 2026 | Mechanical-watch overhaul | Every two to three years | Applies to mechanical watches; the page describes the work as chargeable. | Use Citizen’s service channel for your region. |
| Citizen US warranty materials | Water-resistance testing and resealing for covered models | Every two to three years, or whenever a battery is replaced, whichever comes first | US-specific warranty guidance; it covers water-resistant models, including Eco-Drive, under the stated purchase conditions. | Follow the applicable Citizen US warranty and service instructions. |
| Casio — current FAQ accessed 2026 | Gasket replacement to maintain water resistance | About every two or three years for covered water-resistant models; every two years for diver’s watches | Recommendations vary by watch type. The interval is for gaskets, not a full movement overhaul. | Casio says a trained technician inspects water resistance when the battery is replaced on applicable models. |
Rolex’s FAQ recommends service “approximately every 10 years depending on the model and real-life usage.” Oris says most watches require full service every three to five years, while its Calibre 400 Series has a 10-year interval. Seiko’s roughly three-year advice is affected by climate and individual care. Citizen’s two-to-three-year overhaul recommendation applies to mechanical watches. Those figures describe different watches and, in Casio’s case, a different maintenance task; they should not be ranked as if they measured the same work.

Water resistance has its own maintenance schedule
Water resistance is not permanent. Seiko notes that seals can deteriorate and be affected by shocks, and Casio and Citizen give separate gasket, resealing or testing guidance. A watch may still keep time accurately even if its seals no longer provide the protection indicated by its rating.
- For a water-resistant Casio, use the model-specific gasket guidance; Casio’s stated schedule is about every two or three years for covered models and every two years for diver’s watches.
- For a Citizen covered by the cited US warranty terms, arrange testing and resealing on the stated schedule, or at battery replacement if that comes first.
- For other brands and models, check the current manual or official service guidance rather than assuming that a movement-service interval also covers seals.
If your watch is used in water, do not rely solely on its age or on the fact that it has not shown a problem. Ask an authorized service provider what testing is appropriate for its model and use.

When to arrange service sooner
Do not wait for the calendar interval if the watch has been damaged, shows moisture, or develops a change in accuracy. A watch exposed to water or a significant shock also merits professional advice, particularly if its seals or case may have been affected. The manufacturer guidance does not establish one universal symptom threshold; the right assessment depends on the model and what happened.
How to apply the guidance to your watch
- Identify the watch precisely. Find its model or reference number and, where relevant, movement or caliber. Movement-specific schedules matter: Oris distinguishes Calibre 400 Series from most of its other watches.
- Check the current official instructions for your market. Use the manufacturer’s support site, manual or warranty terms. A US warranty condition, for example, should not be treated as a global rule.
- Match the interval to the job. Confirm whether the guidance means a full movement service, an overhaul, gasket replacement, battery replacement or water-resistance test.
- Contact an authorized service provider. Rolex directs owners to an Official Rolex Jeweler or Service Center, and Seiko recommends an Authorized Seiko Service Center. Use the appropriate official channel for other brands and ask what inspection or work is required for your exact watch.
Rolex describes a complete service as including dismantling, cleaning, inspection, lubrication, timing tests, refinishing, and checks of waterproofness and power reserve. It also says cost depends on the work and the watch’s condition, with an estimate provided after assessment; there is no comparable price schedule here for the other brands.
