The original Christopher Ward C1 Moonglow is an automatic moonphase watch whose two luminous, three-dimensional moon discs move beneath a smoked sapphire aperture. Its layered display gives it a distinctive look; the trade-offs are a restrained, largely monochrome dial and modest 3 ATM water resistance. This review covers the original model, then separates it from the revised C1 Moonglow reported in 2024.
What makes the original C1 Moonglow distinctive?
The defining feature is its moonphase display: two three-dimensional luminous moon discs move continuously beneath a smoked, translucent sapphire aperture. A luminescent outer date ring surrounds the display. This layered construction gives the watch depth while keeping its overall appearance subdued. Christopher Ward’s owner’s manual documents the display and components.
Reviewers have responded to that design in different ways. Tom Pettit’s 2019 Oracle of Time review praised the layered presentation, lume, case shape and business-casual versatility, while finding the dial somewhat monochromatic, the smoked layer short on contrast and some red-tipped indications insufficiently luminous. Darrell Etherington’s 2020 TechCrunch review emphasized the continuously moving lunar display and its suitability for everyday or formal wear. These are individual design impressions, not measured performance results.

These figures are from the Christopher Ward manual; its publication date is not stated. The manual identifies the base calibre as Sellita SW220 with the JJ04 module. That differs from Oracle of Time’s 2019 and 2024 articles, which describe an ETA 2836 with JJ04. The manufacturer manual is the primary source for the specification table above, and the discrepancy should not be treated as resolved by combining the two descriptions.

How accurate is the moonphase?
Christopher Ward says in the manual that “The position of the moon will remain unerringly accurate to a day every 128 years if kept wound.” That is the manufacturer’s claim about the moonphase indication, not an independent test result or a statement about the watch’s timekeeping accuracy. The same manual gives a separate movement timing tolerance of -10/+20 seconds per day.
How to set the original C1 Moonglow moonphase
The manual’s setting instructions use crown position 2 to adjust the date and moonphase. For a reliable phase setting, it directs the owner to use the date of the last full moon or new moon. Avoid date correction during the period the manual warns against: 18:00 to 02:00.

- If the watch has stopped, wind it about 20 turns clockwise to restart it, as suggested in the manual. A full wind provides up to 38 hours of reserve.
- Pull the crown to position 2. Turn clockwise to set the date and counter-clockwise to set the moonphase.
- Use the date of the most recent full moon or new moon as the reference for setting the phase. The manual describes setting date and phase independently.
- Do not correct the date between 18:00 and 02:00, as the manual cautions.

Original vs. the 2024 C1 Moonglow
Oracle of Time reported a second-generation model in March 2024. The diameter remained 40.5 mm, but the update adopted a more angular Light-catcher case, grew to 12.9 mm thick, and received brighter moon lume. Its coverage lists a 3 bar water-resistance rating, a 26-jewel JJ04 automatic movement and a 38-hour reserve.

For the original, the manual specifies a Sellita SW220 base calibre; the 2024 coverage names JJ04 but does not establish the base calibre in the same way. Do not assume that the two movement descriptions are interchangeable.
Is the C1 Moonglow worth considering?
It is most compelling if the animated, layered moonphase display is the reason you want a watch. The two moving luminous discs make the complication visible and visually central rather than hiding it in a small subdial. The original’s 40.5 mm case and business-casual styling also drew positive notice from the 2019 reviewer.

It is a less obvious fit if you prioritize a high-contrast dial, water resistance for swimming, or a conventional, easy-to-read layout. The original is rated to 3 ATM/30 metres, and the 2019 review’s concerns about subdued contrast and the monochrome impression may matter to readers who want stronger visual separation. No market-wide comparative test or independently verified accuracy result is established in the cited coverage.

The original uses a 20 mm quick-release strap setup, and the manual lists Italian Shell Cordovan with Bader deployment or a Milanese mesh bracelet. A replacement strap should match the 20 mm width, but that alone does not guarantee compatibility with the original deployment clasp; check the strap and clasp fit before ordering.
