Because a Chrono24 search result is an asking price, not evidence that a buyer paid that amount. The gap between visible offers and completed sales can make the market look more expensive than it is. Differences in condition, seller type, what comes with the watch, and the delivered cost can also make two apparently similar listings poor comparisons.
Asking prices are not sale prices
An active listing shows what a seller hopes to receive. It does not establish what a buyer will pay. Chrono24’s Market Scanner distinguishes average asking prices from average sale prices, which are different measures. Its dealer-facing data also describes recent sales with details such as condition, included items, seller region, buyer country, time-to-sell, seller type, date, and sale price. Access to those features may depend on the tool and user.

Chrono24 says its market-price analysis uses sales and offer data from the last eight weeks and accounts for watch characteristics. That is the platform’s stated method, not an independent appraisal or proof that any particular listing is fairly priced. The available information does not quantify how much lower completed sales are than asking prices across the marketplace.

Similar-looking watches may not be comparable
Start with the exact reference, then compare the details that can change value or buyer risk:

- Used Book in Good Condition
- Condition and service: Wear, repairs, service history, and known faults can separate two watches with the same reference.
- Completeness: Check whether the listing includes the original box, papers, accessories, or other items you expect.
- Seller type: A dealer’s price may include a seller’s warranty and checks of precision or water resistance, according to Chrono24’s valuation guidance. A private-seller offer is not automatically equivalent.
- Seller reputation and protections: Review the seller’s history and the terms attached to the specific listing before treating a lower price as the better offer.
The displayed price may not be the delivered cost
Chrono24 notes that the total can include packaging, insurance, shipping, and taxes such as VAT or import duties. Cross-border costs vary by buyer and seller location, so compare the amount you would actually pay—not just the headline price. Chrono24’s FAQ sums it up: “Many factors contribute to a watch’s total price.” See its FAQ and Help pages for marketplace information.
Demand and scarcity can support an ask, but do not prove it
Limited production, discontinuation, and current demand can affect a watch’s value. They may help explain why a seller sets a high price, but they do not show that buyers are paying it. Likewise, the cheapest active listing is not necessarily a reliable fair-value benchmark: it may differ in condition, completeness, location, or seller terms.

Chrono24’s appraisal information says its tool compares a watch with listings from around the world to suggest a price, drawing on “500,000 listings.” The figure is Chrono24’s own description; the surfaced page does not state a year for it, and it is not an independently verified count. A suggested price is a reference point, not a guaranteed sale value. Chrono24 also recommends comparing listings manually and notes that a jeweler or auction house can appraise a watch.

- Match the reference and condition. Exclude comparisons that differ materially in model reference, state, or service history.
- Compare what is included. Note box, papers, accessories, and any stated warranty or checks.
- Separate dealer and private offers. Consider seller reputation and the protections that apply to that exact transaction.
- Calculate delivered cost. Add shipping, insurance, packaging, and applicable taxes or duties for your location.
- Look beyond active asks. Use recent completed-sale evidence and time-to-sell information where available, alongside current comparable offers.
- Seek an independent appraisal when needed. For a high-value or unusual watch, a qualified jeweler or auction house can provide another assessment.
Check the protection terms before paying
Chrono24’s Buyer Protection page describes escrow holding periods of 14 days for dealer purchases and up to 7 days for private-seller purchases after delivery; the page does not state a publication year for those figures. These periods describe how long payment is held, not an extended warranty. Chrono24’s FAQ says private-seller purchases are not covered by Chrono24 Buyer Protection. Read the current terms for the specific listing and transaction rather than assuming the same coverage applies to every seller.

What the evidence cannot tell you
Visible listings alone do not establish that Chrono24 prices are generally overpriced, nor how often an asking price exceeds the eventual sale price. A recent r/Watches discussion raised the idea that lower-priced watches may sell faster and therefore be less visible. That is an anecdotal hypothesis, not a measured marketplace-wide effect. For an individual watch, exact-reference comparisons and independent recent transaction evidence are more useful than treating either the algorithmic suggested price or the lowest active offer as definitive.
