It is distinct from chronophobia, which means fear of time itself or of time passing. The distinction matters: available health sources discuss chronophobia more fully, but do not establish a separate, validated diagnosis or diagnostic criteria for chronomentrophobia.
What does chronomentrophobia mean?
Healthline uses chronomentrophobia for a rare fear of timepieces, including clocks and watches. A person might feel distressed by seeing or hearing a clock, wearing a watch, or being near timekeeping devices. That description explains how the term is used; it does not establish a clinical diagnosis.
Chronophobia refers instead to fear of time or its passage. Cleveland Clinic’s explainer covers that fear, not a clock- or watch-specific condition. Healthline and Cleveland Clinic describe the terms in these different ways.
Is chronomentrophobia a recognized diagnosis?
The cited sources do not provide a validated clock-fear-specific diagnosis, diagnostic criteria, or test. Cleveland Clinic says chronophobia is assessed through a mental-health evaluation and has no specific test; that information applies to chronophobia, not a separately established diagnosis of chronomentrophobia.

Feeling uneasy around a ticking clock or disliking watches does not by itself mean someone has a disorder. If fear is persistent, intense, or interferes with daily activities, a qualified mental-health professional can help assess what is happening without assuming a particular diagnosis.
What symptoms are associated with fear of time?
Cleveland Clinic lists dizziness, sweating, palpitations, nausea, shortness of breath, and trembling among symptoms reported with chronophobia. These are general anxiety-related symptoms in the context of fear of time; they are not a validated symptom list for chronomentrophobia. Their presence alone cannot show that a person has a clock- or watch-specific condition.

How common is fear of clocks or watches?
No clock-fear-specific prevalence figure is established by the cited sources. Cleveland Clinic says it is difficult to know how many people have chronophobia. Its page, last updated March 22, 2022, reports that about 1 in 10 American adults and 1 in 5 teenagers will deal with a specific phobia disorder at some point in their lives. Those are general figures for specific phobias—not estimates for chronophobia or chronomentrophobia.

Consider talking with a mental-health professional if fear of clocks or watches is causing significant distress, leading to persistent avoidance, or disrupting work, school, relationships, sleep, or other everyday activities. Explain what triggers the fear and how it affects you; a clinician can evaluate those concerns rather than relying on a label alone.

Cleveland Clinic describes psychotherapy, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), as treatment for chronophobia. That is adjacent information, not evidence of a clock-specific treatment protocol. Do not force yourself into exposure to a feared clock or watch as a substitute for individualized professional guidance.
