The design builds on the original Blue Planet, which CIGA says won the 2021 GPHG Challenge Watch Prize. This is a design-led automatic watch with an unconventional way of showing time—not a conventional dial with hands.
What is the Blue Planet Gilding Version?
CIGA Design styles the watch “AUTOMATIC WATCH BLUE PLANET · GILDED AGE.” Its European listing calls it the U-Series Blue Planet Gilding Edition Automatic Watch and identifies the model as U031-BG01-W6B7B. The official product page offers 43 mm and 46 mm sizes. CIGA Design’s product listing is the source for the specifications and product descriptions below.
“Gilding” describes the dial treatment, not a gold case or bracelet. CIGA says the dial is CNC-engraved as topographic relief and receives a final layer of pure 24K gold. The case and bracelet are black ceramic, beneath a domed sapphire crystal.
How does its unusual time display work?
There are no conventional hands. Instead, the sculpted Earth dial rotates, while the hour and minute indications meet at one compass marker. CIGA says the Earth dial advances 30° per hour and the inner minute ring rotates 390° per hour; their alignment at the marker indicates the time. The result asks the wearer to read a moving, globe-like display rather than locate two hands against fixed hour markers.

That makes the display central to the watch’s appeal and its practical trade-off: it offers a distinctive way to check the time, but the information is not presented like a standard analog dial. No independent legibility or hands-on evaluation is established here.

These are manufacturer-listed specifications, not independent performance measurements. At 3 ATM, the watch has a modest stated water-resistance rating; do not treat that figure as a promise of suitability for swimming or other water activities. What does the Gilded Age treatment add?
The gold-finished relief emphasizes the landforms and contours of the globe, while the black ceramic case and bracelet frame the dial in a contrasting, monochrome tone. It is a more overtly decorative interpretation of the Blue Planet concept; “golden child” is best understood as a description of this special finish and the model’s place in the collection, not as a claim that the watch is made from solid gold.
CIGA describes a two-stage CNC engraving process, taking over 18 hours followed by a further 6 hours. The brand also says the ceramic case is fired at 1,500°C for 144 hours and polished for more than 200 hours. Those timings and process details are CIGA’s manufacturing claims, not independently audited production data.

Why is the original Blue Planet notable?
CIGA’s current product page says the original Blue Planet won the GPHG Challenge Watch Prize in 2021, stood out among 208 entries, and was the first Chinese watch to win in the competition’s history. These award details are attributed to CIGA; an independent GPHG results page was not available among the sources for this article.
The page also reproduces a WATCHTIME comment: “With the original Blue Planet being already so good that it impressed the jury of the GPHG, this Gilding Edition takes the unique design of the watch to an even higher level.” CIGA presents the quotation on its own product page; it was not independently checked against a WATCHTIME article.

It likewise reproduces this assessment attributed to Monochrome Watches: “Its creative, unconventional design adds a bit of fun and whimsy to time telling, turning something potentially mundane into an experience whenever you check your watch.” This quotation was also encountered on CIGA’s product page, rather than in an independently opened Monochrome Watches article.
What are the listed prices and availability?
Prices and stock vary by regional listing and can change. CIGA’s international product page displayed $1,999 USD, while CIGA Design Europe displayed €1,599 and marked the model sold out or currently unavailable. Those are regional listing snapshots, not a universal price or a guarantee of current availability. Which size should you consider?
The listings establish two case sizes and one stated bundle difference, but they do not establish which size will fit or feel better on a particular wrist.
- 43 mm: The smaller of the two listed sizes. CIGA’s product page lists the ceramic bracelet; it does not state that this size includes the fluororubber strap.
- 46 mm: The larger listed size. CIGA says its package includes the ceramic bracelet and a black fluororubber strap.
Choose based on how you feel about the unconventional display and which size suits your preferences; wrist comfort and day-to-day legibility have not been independently assessed. For replacement straps, CIGA’s store search results list a ceramic strap for the Blue Planet Gilding Version and an exclusive Blue Planet fluororubber strap. Confirm size compatibility and current stock with the seller before ordering.
