Citizen’s Aqualand began in 1985 with a defining idea: put an electronic depth sensor into a quartz diver’s watch. For its 40th anniversary, Citizen revisited the original’s distinctive layout with the limited-edition Promaster Aqualand JP2008-06E, announced for release in 2025.
What made the original Citizen Aqualand different?
Citizen dates the CITIZEN AQUALAND DEPTH METER to 1985. The company describes it as “the world’s first combination quartz diver’s watch fitted with an electronic depth sensor.” That is Citizen’s historical claim; the sources available here are from Citizen, not independent industry-wide verification. Citizen’s product history records the watch in its 1985 chronology.
The defining feature was not merely a dive-watch look: an electronic sensor made depth information part of the watch’s instrument display. Citizen Design’s archive identifies the original as caliber C022, with a quartz movement and stainless-steel case. It says the watch measured current and maximum depth and included an audible alarm. Citizen Design’s Aqualand archive calls it “the world’s first diver’s watch with an electronic depth meter.”
How did the sensor shape the watch’s design?
Citizen’s retrospective design account says the original prioritized dive time while also presenting current and maximum depth. The hands and indices were designed for quick reading, with attention to their size, shape and luminous area. The sensor was both functional and unmistakable visually: it helped give Aqualand a layout unlike a conventional three-hand diver.

For the anniversary edition, Citizen retained the recognizable arrangement: sensor at 9 o’clock, crown at 4 o’clock and three push buttons. The company also gave the case a gray matte finish with gold-tone details, and added a caseback mark inspired by the sensor shape. Citizen Philippines’ anniversary story describes the design continuity.
What is the 40th-anniversary Aqualand model?
The anniversary watch is the Citizen Promaster Aqualand JP2008-06E. Citizen announced it on June 5, 2025, with a planned July 10, 2025 release and a worldwide limited run of 5,800 pieces. Those are launch-announcement details, not confirmation of present-day stock. The Japanese announcement listed a suggested retail price of ¥82,500 including tax (¥75,000 before tax); Citizen Europe listed a 2025 recommended retail price of €479. Both are regional launch-era prices, not current offers. Citizen’s Japanese launch announcement and Citizen Europe’s Aqualand anniversary article provide the respective details.

What the anniversary means for the Aqualand story
The JP2008-06E makes the anniversary legible in the watch itself: it keeps the sensor-forward arrangement that marked the 1985 model, while giving it a special gray-and-gold finish and a biomass-derived strap material. Its significance is the continuity of the original concept—an electronic depth instrument integrated into a quartz diver’s watch—rather than evidence that every historical Aqualand detail has remained unchanged.
